Stop Being a Chicken: Bishop Barron on the Realities of Baptism

  • Friends, the sacrament of Baptism is objective: the visible sign of invisible incorporation into the Mystical Body of Jesus. Every baptized person is, objectively speaking, a child of God, divinized, and destined to be a great saint. Therefore, we must not follow the prompts of worldly power or success. Running after such material things amounts to pecking on the ground like chickens.

Daniel Prendergast yup, that’s what’s so weird. Necessary? Because the Bible clearly says so. But not? Because that’s not how you’re “saved,” it’s just a symbol. Idk, never really sat well with me. Never an explanation of WHY the Bible says we should do it.

@@GratiaPrima_ Christ let John the Baptist Baptize him, that is why. Its in the Bible. John proclaims baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sin. He also said, "Another will come after me who will not baptize with water, but with the Holy Spirit".

clattereffect right, the Bible says so. Amen! But why? My childhood church has no answer to that. Just (to their credit) obedience. The Catholic Church has the why. Baptism is regenerative, not symbolic, and is the doorway to the rest of the sacraments God in his grace provided for our life of faith.

For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ. And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light. King James Version
3 But I fear, lest by any means, as the serpent beguiled Eve through his subtilty, so your minds should be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ.

Bishop Barron, you not only help us with your explanations, you help us to reach others, provide the proper context for why things are important. As a serious Catholic I hear the Blessed Mother tell the shepherd children why and how the world must be consecrated to her Immaculate Heart, but it wasn't achieved and evil continued to spread through Communisum, (athiesium). You have given us full use of your learning to pass on through the Good Council of the Holy Spirit that provides it in the first place. Thank you for using your gifts to help us.

Amen, your Excellency! I strongly assent that Baptism is objective and is a sign of invisible incorporation into the Mystical Body of Christ. Here's my little testimony. After several years, I was a lapsed Catholic for so many years until my stepmother who has her son preparing for Baptism. I was asked if I can be a sponsor for my little stepbrother. I told her that I was not practicing my faith because of laziness, always keep taking life for granted just like an analogy of chickens pecking on the ground. Then she said, "You have to be a practicing Catholic first." So, I decided to come back to the fold. I went to confession and be reconciled back to God again just like a prodigal son. LOL. Therefore, I began to beome a devout practicing Catholic again.

I was baptised as an infant, and had 'God parents'. None of them ever spoke of the Lord, religion, holiness. (I could go on) I am glad and blessed to have found the way to the Church. One of the regular joys is watching our priest baptising infants, and reminding us all of our role in the upbringing of that child.

@@annapaulineogrady9184 I love the KJV, but sometimes reading other versions can help with understanding too. I am struggling to learn French, and a good friend gave me a French Bible, reading that with both my KJV and an RSV together gives me cause to sit and contemplate the inspired words.

That, bishop, is a home run. As baptized in Christ, we are called to a greatness greater than who we see ourselves to be, a greatness possible to achieve with and in Christ. And, greatness in Christ does not necessarily equate to fireworks and splash. Brother Andrew, now a saint, was the doorman at the St. joseph oratory in Montreal.

I heard about the Priest who wasn't properly Baptized. Not only was his Baptism invalid but all subsequent Sacraments he received afterwards were invalid. And worse yet the consecration of the Holy Eucharist and the other Sacraments he had administered to other people were not valid because he wasn't an Ordained Priest.

  • @samuelstepp2890

I am curious Bishop. You mentioned that a valid Baptism includes the phrase wherein the Baptizer says "I baptize thee [name] in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost," and that that exact phrase is necessary for a valid Baptism in the eyes of the Catholic Church. However, what about Orthodox Christians? My understanding is the Baptizer uses the passive voice and says "The servant of God [name] is baptized in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost." Does this mean that Orthodox baptisms are invalid in the eyes of the Catholic Church? I was under the impression the Catholic Church and Orthodox Church viewed each other's sacraments or mysteries as mutually valid (with the possible exception of matrimony wherein Orthodox Christians only consider Orthodox Christian weddings valid). Thanks.

    Bishop,
Why does the intention of the Church not supply validity in the case of Fr. Hood's baptism. I remember the case of the priest who says the words of consecration in front of the bakery. Why does not all of the bread in the bakery not get consecrated? Because that is not what the Church intends, right?

What I don't understand, as a discerning Catholic, is why does the church string out the baptism and confirmation process for adults with RCIA? Granted I am enjoying my RCIA classes and discussions, but what if something terrible were to happen to someone before they get baptized and confirmed? You spend 6 months to a year or more in this catechism process, even when you're knowledgeable of the faith and put in the extra effort to understand the Catholic traditions outside of RCIA. I'm not playing chicken with baptism, but the CC sure does take its sweet time in following through with baptism.

In regards to the chicken/eagle analogy, the opposite happened for Fr. Hood. He grew up thinking he was an “eagle”, later finding out he was a “chicken” (i.e. not validly baptized). I’m glad they re-performed his baptism ceremony correctly. It’s disturbing that situations like this happens, especially since an incorrect baptism isn’t the baby’s fault. All these years, would he at least been considered having a “Baptism of Desire”, since he had always “believed he was baptized”?

So if someone went to the Sacrament of Reconciliation with him before his valid Baptism and Ordination, etc., and they confessed a mortal sin, repented and later died, would they go to hell even if they hadn't committed another grave sin?

    • @Thanar2
      @Thanar2 4 года назад +7

Here is the answer in the FAQ on Fr. Hood from the Archdiocese of Detroit - www.aod.org/sacramentsupdate
Question: I went to confession before Father Hood realized he was not validly ordained. Did I receive absolution of my sins through him?
Answer: No, you did not receive sacramental absolution, which is the act of a priest during confession through which God grants the penitent pardon and peace. Since Father Hood was not validly ordained, he was unable to provide sacramental absolution.
However, in this situation, you should reflect on the fact that you attempted to do as Jesus instructed us in the Gospel when he gave priests the power to absolve sins (Jn. 20:22-23). You can always be comforted in the fact that God knows that you made every effort to follow His plan exactly for the forgiveness of your sins. The Church, following St. Thomas Aquinas, maintains that God has bound Himself to the sacraments, but He is not bound by the sacraments (cf. Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1257 and St. Thomas Aquinas, Summa theologiaeIII, q. 64 a. 7 and III q. 68 a. 2). This means that while we can have certainty that God always works through the sacraments when they are properly conferred by the minister, God is not bound by the sacraments in that He can and does extend His grace in a sovereign way. We can be assured that all those who approached Father Hood, in good faith, to make a confession did not walk away without some measure of grace and forgiveness from God.
That said, if you recall any grave (mortal) sins that you would have confessed to Father Hood before he was validly ordained and you have not yet been to a subsequent confession, you must bring them to your next confession explaining to any priest what has happened. If you cannot remember if you confessed any grave sins, you should bring that fact to your next confession as well. A subsequent absolution will include those sins and will give you peace of mind.

I remember one time when that during the mass the pirest told us that during the consecration if he misspelled the words accidentally, then by the grace of Jesus and the Holy Spirit the sacrament would still be valid, but if he intentionally misspell the words, then the sacrament would be invalid. I'm wondering if that would be the same for all sacraments.
This anecdote of the baptism has uncomfortable implications: not all people have their baptism recorded, and most of them are not aware of the exact words that may be pronounced. So that would mean that there are likely a lot of other people who were baptized with a misspelled word without realizing it. Is there any further discussion about it?

You can believe what the Catholic church teaches about baptism, or you can believe what the Bible teaches on the subject, but you can't believe both. In the Bible, there is never an instance of infant baptism. Water baptism doesn't make you a member of the body of Christ. Water baptism is a way of confessing to the world that your ARE a member of the body of Christ. And of course, an infant can't do that.
