In my humble opinion Mike Portnoy is the best drummer in history because he can convey emotions on the instrument like no one else can do so clearly! Not for being the fastest or the most TECHNICAL, but for thrilling people!
His drumming to entertain the audience is really amazing! It shows a different face from the concentration when listening to the performance. I love both faces! Loveportnoy!

I was at this show and remember coming back from the intermission (late...like an idiot...) and walking through the hall hearing what sounded like an orchestra playing the overture to six degrees. Me and my buddy looked at eachother like “no way....”. What a show.
Mike has the same energy of that amateur drummer fan who gets invited - completely out of the blue - to play his favorite song on his favorite band show. You kinda forget he's the professional drummer who recorded and has been playing this song countless times for the past 8 years. Maybe that energy is the reason he's a drum legend.
