Very sad that he died on South Georgia Island preparing for another journey to the Antarctic at the young age of 49. His final resting place is on this island.

    Truthfully it has been documented that Shackleton made many, many errors in judgement and had it not been for his captains foresight as well as his remarkable navigation skills the entire crew would have been lost. Frank Worsley was his name, without him this story would be a mystery.

    • @BMR96
      @BMR96 2 года назад +6

      You're right!
      But there are so few people who know that. Almost all of them call Shackleton a hero,his decisions we're very close to kill them all,that's the type of hero he was. His captain however,proved himself,and I think that only a handful of sailors in history had enough skills and power to save those people.

    • @francismontocchio9910
      @francismontocchio9910 2 года назад +8

      I agree with you, Joe Hansen. Frank Worsley is, to me, the unsung, true hero of the journeys in the small boats. After a number of bad errors of judgement on Shackelton's behalf, putting them all in this situation, it was Worsley's seamanship, sailing experience with small boats and extraordinary navigational skills, without which they would have perished for certain. This doesn't lessen Shackelton's leadership qualities. His determination to ensure the survival of his men and his initial decision to take Worsley as captain were exemplary.

    • @francismontocchio9910
      @francismontocchio9910 2 года назад +7

      @@dabadoo7631 It was some of Shackelton's risky decisions that might be seen to have ultimately led to their plight. One could say that his determination to succeed and his fear of losing face might have led to these decisions. It could, of course, have been his confidence in his abilities. The first questionable decision was during the stop on the downward journey at South Georgia, where local fishermen and a crew of Norwegian seamen advised him not to go on because of the conditions they had recently witnessed themselves. He then made another questionable decision to change plans and not to stop where they initially had intended to. He decided that they should push on further south to get closer to the Pole. This decision was made after encountering an unusual amount of ice they had been warned about. Having said this, I must emphasise that Shackelton's leadership from the moment they got stuck in the ice until he rescued everyone was exemplary, the likes of which we have hardly ever seen in history. Unfortunately, Frank Worsley's contribution to the success of the rescue effort as an experienced and highly skilled sailor is often overlooked. It has often been said in sailing circles and in sailing terms that what Worsely managed as the captain of those small boats was close to the impossible.

It is a tragedy that Scott lost his life along with two companions on the barrier. Scott was a great organizer but when the situation was the bleakest Sir Ernest was on top of his game. Tom Crean an Irishman that sailed with them both wrote a couple of books one about the Endurance expedtion called Hold Fast and one about Scott's Discovery Expedition called Antarctic Voyager both great reads and not too long. Discovery was the expedition that claimed Scott's life just 11 miles short of survival.

    I find the title of this film to be very misleading. While the film does follow along part of the route that was taken by Shackleton and his men and touch on some of what they went through, the majority of it seems like an little adventure and science exploration without much focus on the background and challenges the men faced. It also largely just glosses over the year+ the men spent on the ice before reaching Elephant Island.

    Dangerous part of the world yet. Weather is harsh. Snow,ice , and frigid temperatures. Just a barren part of the world.Endurance was caught in the ice. Endurance crushed by the ice. Shackleton and crew took to the boats. With provisions they could take on their journey, they survived. Getting to elephant Island with the boats and setting up a camp site for help to come. It was a perilous journey from Elephant Island to The Whaling Station. In a boat with a sextant, getting to the Whaling Station from Elephant Island, was no easy task. 800 mile journey. Perhaps the most terrible event in modern history to survive under harsh conditions.

    "...saved his entire crew from certain death..." Not really. He saved them from a situation that was extremely likely to be fatal. If it was certain death, they certainly would have died there.

    Turned this off after ten minutes since there was no mention of Shackleton in that time. Just finished the book, Endurance, and wanted to put some maps and faces on the story, not listen to these guys' story.

    This was lame. A bunch of rich people hire a scientist and some soldiers then get on a boat and float around the Antarctic with all the comforts of home. They would not have survived the real ordeal.

    I thought this was going to be a documentary showing the actual crew excedra sure, I understand technology was different however, this seemed to focus on the crew of today discussing the entire trip and stepping in past tense steps . Thank you but I didn't like this its focus more n you . Happy New year ..

    APPARENTLY, THIS GREAT SHIP OF SHACKELTON WAS FOUND AND UNLIKE LETTING TITANIC RUST AWAY TO A PILE OF ORANGE DUST. I SUGGEST IT BE RAISED AND GIVEN TO A BRITISH MUSEUM FOR THE WORLD TO SEE THE BEFITTING NAME OF THIS SHIP!!!

    Are you sure all I hear is Shackleton did this and Shackleton did that while the only thing I can save the confidence Shackleton really did was deliver good pep talk after he f**** something up the name you need to be crediting begins with Frank and he's the captain of the ship

    Is this narrated by a computer program or something? He pronounces some words quite strangely. Whooping instead of whopping. Glassier instead of glacier etc.

    strange, and arguably unfair and inaccurate portrayal of history wherein Shakleton gets all the credit and not even a passing reference to Frank Worsley - the Captain of The Endurance, without whom, arguably, Shakleton and all his men would have perished. There is no way they could have gone for help without him as Shakleton himself admitted he knew nothing about small vessels and almost had the rescuers killed by insisting the James Caird be laden with ballast, against Frank Worsley's advice. All too reminiscent of Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay, In Colonial times, - understandable that a Brit, noy a sherpa or a kiwi, get all the accolades and praise - one wd think a mdern retelling wd have a diff perspective and give credit where it is due. - In fact, before I fell prey to 'Political Correctness, - Sorry!! Now, I categorically state that Shakleton and all his crew would most definitely not have survived had it not been for their ship's captain - FRANK WORSLEY!!
