Well, they may have shot it a few times from different angles, but there were no cuts. It was one long shot instead of being broken up into smaller shots from different angles in editing. jms from Lurker's Guide BTW, there's another example of a long single take coming up soon, on Epsilon 3, which is all I'll specify. I kinda wanted the scene to play itself out, without cutting, and to show just how amazingly capable some of our actors can be. We're talking here almost 4 minutes of footage, not one cut in the whole thing, very fast dialogue, and not a single muffed line, with the performances working wonderfully. You'll know it when you see it. Our cast invariably comes in knowing full scenes, and can hit them without breaking or blowing a line. So we have a tendency at times to just let the master play out, keeping the intensity, which can sometimes be broken by too much cross-editing. (Note that the Zathras/Ivanova scene a few episodes back is *entirely* one shot, four minutes.)

"Zathros trained in crisis management!" ROFL! That right there is the beauty of the writing. You've got this immense space epic with a human civil war and another war, basically against gods, clashes between great leaders, grand schemes, and life and death crises. But not to worry, Zathros is trained in crisis management!

The Zathras scenes always seem semi-improv'ed... like that pronunciation bit, the talking to dirt, and how they're all named Zathras. As many have noted, the guy who played Zathras (all of the Zathrases) was REALLY good!

I cosplayed him at a sci-fi con a few years ago. I had the fur-skin outfit, the wild hair & the huge nose. I did the husky broken language & the over-exaggerated walk. AND NOBODY KNEW WHO THE FUCK I WAS PORTRAYING! Most people asked me if I was the Hunchback of Notre Dame. I was almost offended! LOL
no cowboy yelling NEXT MAN TO MAKE A MOVE...no dumb Hitler on musical play...no rabbi attire, no tiny guillotine demonstration on a carrot...no dancing Merry Men ( not feigeles ) on tights...hmmm still some quick thinking...hehe. Just great
Zathras was the most underated role of the show. Just great acting. Smartest cat in the room. Claudia was just a babe. This and Stargate were my favorite shows of the 90s. Better times. Alot of good ScFi. The story lines were good. Now they are action flicks with CGI.
The character Zathras was only seen a few episodes but was one of my favorites. He was very quirky but could also be very wise on occasion. I only learned recently that the actor who played Zathras died back in 2004(learned that from watching the Babylon 5 - 20th Anniversary Convention Memorial). So many familiar faces are gone but live on threw Babylon 5. RIP Tim Choate
Zathras doesn't mind you loving Zathras! Zathras loved Zathras. It's how Zathras rolled, how Zathras rolls, and how Zathras will roll... unless of course one of the old races that left is in fact a whole bunch of Zathras.

From this little interaction between Susan and Zathras, it's a stretch to remember that she is one of the two most dangerous women in the galaxy... Delenn, of course being just as frightening. "I am death incarnate" meets "Why not?"
Oooh tough choice, who is more dangerous? On the one hand we have Susan, who, even on a good day, wants to kill us all, and on a bad day wants to torture us before killing us. Preferably with pliers. On the other hand we have Delenn, who just wants everyone to get along but is too polite to point out when you're crossing her limits. Until you do cross her limit and then she nukes your homeplanet and all your colonies. And just for clarity: These are the good guys in this story. The bad guys are worse.
And Zathras is on second. Before Zathras left, Zathras was the Designated Hitter, but now they have to play by National League rules. Zathras is not happy about this because while Zathras has a great fastball, and a decent slider Zathras can not hit. Zathras thinks Zathras should just bunt instead of always hitting into double plays.
Thor's Hammer ah yes Zathras good at baseball because there are 9 Zathras. Zathras prefer to Pitch but Zathras must bat, Zathras wanted to be pinch hit for but no one listened to poor Zathras. Zathras will now strike out swinging on three straight pitches with bases loaded. Zathras thinks Zathras should hit the cages but Zathras never listens to Zathras.
I love this series . got every episode. wish it had lasted longer, but a remake would not have the same feel . Too many key performers have passed beyond the rim.

Several of the behind the scenes people on B5 had a background in live theater and that was what JMS wanted. He liked having things play out in long takes where you can see the characters interact, rather than building a performance through editing & smash cuts.

We all love Zathras, and for good reason. But I particularly love watching Claudia Christian as Ivanova reacting to him in this scene!
You could see at various points she had to fight the urge to laugh.

I love this series . got every episode. wish it had lasted longer, but a remake would not have the same feel . Too many key performers have passed beyond the rim.

Several of the behind the scenes people on B5 had a background in live theater and that was what JMS wanted. He liked having things play out in long takes where you can see the characters interact, rather than building a performance through editing & smash cuts.
This guys is classic. Babylon 5 wouldn't be complete without him. So many good lines, especially alongside Susan :) Thx
