This is the best dowelmax intro video. In the end, you simply have to start using the jig repeatedly in different projects with different thickness stock and angles. I learn something new each time I use it. Thanks for putting together an excellent, clear video.
As a dowelmax user I compliment you on a really good tutorial. A useful tip I learned which you may already know but if not here it is. When dry fitting sometimes it difficult to get the pieces apart. I lightly sand some dowels and lightly spray paint them some bright color so when dry fitting the parts come apart easily.
I think this is probably the best single video covering all the “need to know” Dowelmax features. Great job! I love the jig itself, but their own videos are painful to get through.
Thank you for this. I was stuck trying to figure out how to do midface joints, such as a shelf in the middle of a long board and had no clue how to achieve it. This showed me exactly how to do it. One tip that I can give back is on setting the depth stop gauge. I 3d printed up some spacers for the common sizes I work on, that I can use. Then I just put the jig on the wood, put the spacer over the bit, then drop it into the jig with the stop loose. Then just tighten it down and Bob's your uncle! No need for a $60 setter and only takes seconds to do.
Nicely done! I just picked one up and it was a nice walk-through! I was wondering why they don't have a centerline scribed out of the box. Seems like a common use case.
You sure have mastered that thing. I bought one about 4 years ago and have never used it. I watched his entire set of video instructions and decided that was too much for me. Maybe after watching your video I might get inspired to try it.
I have been using Dowalmax for a few years and love it. Of all the videos I’ve seen yours is the best tutorial I’ve seen. Just ordered the 1/4” drill guides and anxious to use them on 1/2” ply. Just a little tip I learned a few years ago. sometimes it’s difficult to take apart dry fit pieces so if you lightly sand some dowels and very lightly spray paint on them to identify them it makes the dry fit so much easier to take apart.
You can also split the dowel ends in half with a bandsaw or jigsaw, removing material from the middle. They will pinch in and slide in and out without a problem.
Great video - I do have Dowelmax and it is very versatile and accurate jig. The only good solution for doweling mitered waterfall edges (one can also dowel mitered butt joints which was not shown in the video). Dowelmax has lots of good usage videos for each joint type on RUclips and their web site.

I have owned the Jessem and Dowelmax metric versions and think the dowelmax is a little better for overall joinery. And every time I contacted Dowelmax they responded which is always appreciated these days.
That’s good to hear. Jessem was the other jig I considered when researching the Dowelmax. It looks well built but didn’t check off all three reasons I stated in the beginning of the video.

Using the pin as a reference for the edge is brilliant and I have to say I wish I would have thought of that earlier. I used my dowelmax jig the first time today on a laminated hickory mallet head. I needed to run dowels all the through to give it more lateral support and with my first time, using it, and having very little skill, I hit both sides all the way through a 4 inch block dead on the first time.
I'm a long time Dowelmax user, from within the first year or two after they came out with it. One little tip I have.... Using pocket holes between the dowels is a great method when you need to join 2 long pieces together that are too long to clamp, or if you need to have a removable joint. Yes, longer dowels will be stronger but I’m sure there are diminishing returns the longer you go. For 3/8” dowels, 2.5” seems to be good enough if you want something longer than 1.5”.
my dowelmax has been an absolute game changer. i use it on almost every project. excellent video, but i think it would be helpful to clarify that the dowelmax seldom actually centers the dowels, there is almost always a slight offset. for me that was a little counter-intuitive at first, but it doesn't matter as long as the offset is oriented to the same side (mirrored) on both ends of the workpiece. i have made several jigs that hold the drill block in place and provide for clamping at an angle on the face of boards. a DM is cheaper than a domino machine, even with all the accessories. lastly, i really like being able to dry fit a project together with dowels, then disassemble for finishing the parts, then reassembling...knowing that the final assembly will be exact (no wiggle room).
Thanks for the comment. You're correct that isn't exactly a perfectly centered hole. But like you said it isn't very important. The name of the game is reference faces. I'm glad you're able to use it on most projects; it seems to find its way into most of my projects as well!
I've been using my Dowelmax for a couple of years now and I love it. I really like your tip about using the pin to but the jig up against the workpiece. I've always done it by feel and sometimes, the joint is off by just a hair. I'll use the pin trick on my next project and see how it works out.
That was my favorite tip as well. I could either get the edges to line up or the face but never both and it drove me nuts! Now I just use the pin and it's always lined up on the edges perfectly. Super awesome tool!!
Great video and great tool which I have had for a while. TIP...If the dowels are too snug for the holes you can dry them out in the oven or microwave and they will shrink a small amount to make easier for inserting. This is especially helpful for dry fits which have to be disassembled.
There is a tool designed to reach down inside an engine block just a bit and grasp spark plugs. Has plastic/rubber lined jaws. Works very well for pulling 3/8" dowel pins that have gotten stuck during a dry-fit. Doesn't trash the dowel the way pliers or vice-grips will.
Best video out there on the dowelmax. I just ordered the Dowelmax Jr, and the classic clamp. I was worried about the differences between the jr and classic, and this video made me feel better about my choice. I am sure that I will be spending the money I saved on upgrades to this basic kit!

However, your review and video is perfect to show off this amazing tool. I originally bought this over ten years ago to simply make some home outside shutters where I placed dowells every 1/2 inch or so. Had to do a million holes...but this thing saved me. Since then, I use for everything...any project that needs a joint. It's a great tool. I love your organizer too...might have to do something like this one day.
So I have my first situation where I needed to use the screw in spacer on the inside to center on a piece of stock a little smaller than 3/4. So then I needed to drill into the face, and found that the clamps cannot tighten because they hit the spacer before the wood. How do I resolve for that? Do I need to use a block of wood between the claps and bottom of the board I’m drilling into?
Great demo, John~! I got a DowelMax for Christmas (last week) and I just ordered a 1/4" drill guide kit and the 45-degree attachment. I use a sharpie to highlight index marks on tools. Black, red, or silver contrasting w the color of part. Most of my homemade style marking gauges have an identifying end scratched in and inked in w sharpie on one end. I also use a fine jewelry saw or a small tubing cutter to lightly scribe a perfect line in materials (wood or metal dowels).
Thanks Sean. Is a waterfall box a grain matched miter? If so, just use the miter accessory. It's an additional cost but worth it for these applications.

Hey John, this is a terrific video (I'm biased, tho...I love all of your videos). I've had the DowelMax for a while, too, and I love it. It's an extremely well-machined tool that's easy to use. Plus, it's made in Canada, which I love. I love the systainer idea for storage … any chance you have the CNC file for machining the foam? I'd love to buy it if possible. Also, one thing I've found helpful when dowels are too tight to fit (especially in the summer) is to put them in a toaster-oven on low for a while. This shrinks them up/removes moisture (obvi) so they slide in more easily. Really helpful when dryfitting and being able to take pieces apart more easily. Anyway, i love your work and your videos. Thanks for sharing it all with us.

Thanks for this video. I bought the JessEm jig last year (mainly because it was on sale). I used it to build 2 end tables and while it's a great jig, it's pretty bulky when trying to drill the end of a 3/4x1.5 inch rail. The self clamping of the Dowel Max would have been really nice for those. I might be upgrading my jig in the future.
I considered the JessEm jig as well. But the clamps on the Dowelmax were pretty much the deciding factor. I’m sure it would serve you well if you do decide to purchase it.
Hi, Dowelmax also has a 5/16" accessory, do you think this is necessary? I think the 1/4" and 3/8" would cover all the 5/16" applications. Is there a special case for the 5/16"?
Ok, now that I've dug out my dusty Dowelmax and actually used it, thanks to your excellent video... I would love to see you do another video on the Jessem 8350 doweling jig. I ordered one but cannot find an equally adequate video on its capabilities. 🤗
Hey Steve, when I was initially researching jigs back in 2017, I heavily considered the Jessem. The integrated clamping screws was what tipped me over towards the Dowelmax. It’s worked out well. That said, I haven’t ever used the Jessem and don’t see myself purchasing one in the near future.
Great video, John! I was debating whether to pull the trigger on a Dowelmax to complement my pocket hole jig, and your demonstration has convinced me to go ahead. One question: which size Makita systainer are you using for storage? Is it the 'Small' version (Model 197210-9) or Medium (Model 197211-7)?

Looks like you put a lot of time into learning the ins and outs of this tool. If you're really that set on dowels (and rightfully so) I would suggest you consider investing in a DDF-40 dual-doweler by Maffel. It's built like a tank and makes the Domino look like a toy. In fact, the original Domino had metal pins which incidentally they ripped off Mafell's design. Well, they lost in court and had to switch to plastic paddles. Mafell DDF-40 has steel pins, spacers, offsets and a template that makes doweling a synch.
Hey Daniel. Before I bought the Dowelmax, I was really considering the Mafell. I thought it was so cool, but yes very expensive. If I was doing more production cabinet work I would definitely consider it more.
Using the alignment/index pin to reference the side of the workpiece is a great idea - that has been a complaint of mine since I first started using the jig - having to use my finger!

As someone very new to wood working which do you think is better/easier this dowel jig or the kreg pocket hole pro jig ? I’m still only making very basic project at the moment. I was thinking of buying the pro but I saw your video today. Very informative thanks!
I think it depends on what you plan on building. Early on, a pocket hole jig can be really useful because it’s quick and versatile for a lot of DIY projects. If you plan to make more traditional furniture, the Dowelmax will serve you better. I have a really basic Kreg jig that I use sparingly when needed. They can compliment each other; it doesn’t necessarily have to be one or the other. Though I understand buying both right away may not be feasible.

This might seem obvious, but for the other boards you want to joint, you just have to use the doweljig and position it the exact same way you did for the first board so they fit correctly right?
Yes. If you position the boards in the orientation they will be joined, you can mark the two reference faces and edges. That’s where the the jig will line up against.
Excellent crash course on the DowellMax! I've subscribed just because of this video. You presented in a short time what took me hours of watching other videos to learn and even threw in some tips and techniques that no one eIse had thought of. BTW, DowellMax should make a Systainer available - a couple of cardboard boxes don't do it justice. Yours is primo - I made something similar but doesn't look as professional. Well done!
The Systainer Mini T-Loc III (about $35) is a near perfect fit. I tossed the original cardboard box, but kept the form-fitted styrofoam from the original packaging and dropped it into the Mini systainer. There's just enough room along the sides to store all the accessories (additional guides, bits, attachments, etc).
Great video..👍👍👍👍 Will this work for a breadboard on a oak table as long as the middle dowel is glued only. Ream the outside dowels for wood movement but no glue. Cheaper than domino tool..
Thanks! I think I know the method you’re referring to with the Domino. Using 1/2” dowels might be possible though I’ve never tried it. I’m trying to think of why it couldn’t work but can’t think of anything. Actually, pinning the dowels with a smaller dowel might be tough. The dominos are wider so pinning with a 1/4” or 3/8” dowel is simple. Doing that to a 1/2” dowel might affect the integrity of the dowel.
Excellent video on the dowelmax. Mine is enroute and I can't wait to get it. :-) I did the same and ordered the main jig and the 1/4" set, along with the L plate for drilling in the middle of a board. Once the 1/2" set comes back in stock I'll be grabbing that, an extra drill block for the 1/4" set and the miter attachment. The systainer+kaizen foam setup is slick. I have plenty of kaizen foam, but I'll use one of my packouts for storage instead of buying a systainer. Thanks for the video!

Nice interesting video. Just wandering for does who use this in every project, is there a specific reason you don't switched to biscuits? (Domino is for me to expensive, so I leave this one out)
Thanks. From my understanding, biscuits do not provide the amount of strength a dowel or domino provide. I have limited experience with a biscuit joiner but feel they aren't as versatile as this jig can be.
I've purchased this jig and have been using it for about six months now. The very first time I used it everything worked perfectly and my joints were even and tight. WELL worth the money!

@@parillaworks Thank you! I used the jig for the first time last week making the frame of my work table. Glue-ups are the only difficult part I’ve encountered so far. Glue wants to start setting before I can get everything together. Your video may be the best tutorial on RUclips concerning the dowelmax.
If you intend to make furniture, tables, boxes, etc. then yes. If your focus is more on home reno type projects, you might find better things to focus your budget on initially.

I was hoping this could easily be used to drill holes for Cam Locks as as well because it's obviously top of the line en every way I can think of. But I really need to make a piece of furniture that can be easily disabled, using cam locks 😕
Considering how much the dowel Max costs I don't think you should have to scratch a centerline in in it should come with one already in it but besides that, I think it's a great product but expensive
It’s hard to say honestly. It’s kind of like a power tool battery in that the drill bit will work for a while but once you change it, you will definitely notice the difference. But I don’t change them more than once a year.
@@parillaworks I should have been more specific; I asked about how long they last to decide if I should buy extra bits when I buy the jig. Your answer is helpful. Can any 3/8 drill bit be used(for the 3/8 jig), or does it need to be a dowel max bit?
@@bweber6256 DowelMax ships with slightly oversized bits 9.6mm to make fitting multiple dowels a little easier. Speaks to how accurate it is. These can be obtained from any place that carries them such as McMaster, or a really good local hardware store. However, any old 3/8 bit will work. Dowels will be very snug using 3/8. I'm currently drilling face holes with the 9.6, but end-grain holes with 3/8 so I don't have to adjust the depth stop in between, and it's working very well.
It isn’t self-centering. It references of one face and spacers can be added to approximate a centered hole. The key is to always line up on your reference face and edge.
Far quicker to make up some hardwood guides with drill guide inserts . Create them for each project etc .And spray them different colours .Then using tape with the colour marking on them ,mark up all cuts that need to be made with one Jig. I needed 4 for my last job and the materials cost me £23 . Took me 45 mins to make the set .Then It was IMPOSSIBLE to make a mistake !
Do they sell a metric version of the jig?
They do! They have 6mm, 8mm, and 10mm drill guides available.
I bought the metric version because it goes on sale a lot if your not in a hurry
I bought metric because in New Zealand, all timber (lumber) has metric dimensions.

Best video out there on the dowelmax. I just ordered the Dowelmax Jr, and the classic clamp. I was worried about the differences between the jr and classic, and this video made me feel better about my choice. I am sure that I will be spending the money I saved on upgrades to this basic kit!

Thanks for this video. I know there are some 'official dowllmax' video's out there too and mine originally came with a dvd too. However, your review and video is perfect to show off this amazing tool. I originally bought this over ten years ago to simply make some home outside shutters where I placed dowells every 1/2 inch or so. Had to do a million holes...but this thing saved me. Since then, I use for everything...any project that needs a joint. It's a great tool. I love your organizer too...might have to do something like this one day.

So I have my first situation where I needed to use the screw in spacer on the inside to center on a piece of stock a little smaller than 3/4. So then I needed to drill into the face, and found that the clamps cannot tighten because they hit the spacer before the wood. How do I resolve for that? Do I need to use a block of wood between the claps and bottom of the board I’m drilling into?
Great demo, John~! I got a DowelMax for Christmas (last week) and I just ordered a 1/4" drill guide kit and the 45-degree attachment. I'll hold out to see if the 1/2" guides are something I might use. I can't wait to put this thing into action. I use a sharpie to highlight index marks on tools. Black, red, or silver contrasting w the color of part. Most of my homemade style marking gauges have an identifying end scratched in and inked in w sharpie on one end. I also use a fine jewelry saw or a small tubing cutter to lightly scribe a perfect line in materials (wood or metal dowels).

Thanks Sean. Is a waterfall box a grain matched miter? If so, just use the miter accessory. It's an additional cost but worth it for these applications.

Hey John, this is a terrific video (I'm biased, tho...I love all of your videos). I've had the DowelMax for a while, too, and I love it. It's an extremely well-machined tool that's easy to use. Plus, it's made in Canada, which I love. I love the systainer idea for storage … any chance you have the CNC file for machining the foam? I'd love to buy it if possible. Also, one thing I've found helpful when dowels are too tight to fit (especially in the summer) is to put them in a toaster-oven on low for a while. This shrinks them up/removes moisture (obvi) so they slide in more easily. Really helpful when dryfitting and being able to take pieces apart more easily. Anyway, i love your work and your videos. Thanks for sharing it all with us.

Thanks for this video. I bought the JessEm jig last year (mainly because it was on sale). I used it to build 2 end tables and while it's a great jig, it's pretty bulky when trying to drill the end of a 3/4x1.5 inch rail. The self clamping of the Dowel Max would have been really nice for those. I might be upgrading my jig in the future.
I considered the JessEm jig as well. But the clamps on the Dowelmax were pretty much the deciding factor. I’m sure it would serve you well if you do decide to purchase it.
Hi, Dowelmax also has a 5/16" accessory, do you think this is necessary? I think the 1/4" and 3/8" would cover all the 5/16" applications. Is there a special case for the 5/16"?
Hey Pablo. I’m not 100% sure what the use case is for the 5/16”. My guess is it would be good for 5/8” material which is somewhat niche.

Ok, now that I've dug out my dusty Dowelmax and actually used it, thanks to your excellent video... I would love to see you do another video on the Jessem 8350 doweling jig. I ordered one but cannot find an equally adequate video on its capabilities. 🤗
Hey Steve, when I was initially researching jigs back in 2017, I heavily considered the Jessem. The integrated clamping screws was what tipped me over towards the Dowelmax. It’s worked out well. That said, I haven’t ever used the Jessem and don’t see myself purchasing one in the near future.
Great video, John! I was debating whether to pull the trigger on a Dowelmax to complement my pocket hole jig, and your demonstration has convinced me to go ahead.
One question: which size Makita systainer are you using for storage? Is it the 'Small' version (Model 197210-9) or Medium (Model 197211-7)?

No problem! I actually went with the 57mm. It was just about the limit my router bit could do but worked great.

Nothing off the shelf would help with that situation. I believe you would need to fabricate your own shims.
Looks like you put a lot of time into learning the ins and outs of this tool. If you're really that set on dowels (and rightfully so) I would suggest you consider investing in a DDF-40 dual-doweler by Maffel. It's built like a tank and makes the Domino look like a toy. In fact, the original Domino had metal pins which incidentally they ripped off Mafell's design. Well, they lost in court and had to switch to plastic paddles. Mafell DDF-40 has steel pins, spacers, offsets and a template that makes doweling a synch.
Hey Daniel. Before I bought the Dowelmax, I was really considering the Mafell. I thought it was so cool, but yes very expensive. If I was doing more production cabinet work I would definitely consider it more.
Using the alignment/index pin to reference the side of the workpiece is a great idea - that has been a complaint of mine since I first started using the jig - having to use my finger!
Yeah I don't know why I never thought of this! I always smacked my mini milwaukee level against the side to get it flush but this is so much faster.
Wow! Thanks for such a thorough video and showing how it works for angled joinery. I'm curious how I might make it work for something like curved like a table leg but have a much better idea regarding the benefits. This up against the cost of a domino makes me a lot more confident in purchases.
Where do you order your dowels from? Amazons has mostly Chinese brands that aren't quite accurate (diameter changes from dowel to dowel).
I’ll order from a craft parts website that usually has decent product. I’ll use Amazon in a pinch if need be.
As someone very new to wood working which do you think is better/easier this dowel jig or the kreg pocket hole pro jig ?

I think it depends on what you plan on building. Early on, a pocket hole jig can be really useful because it’s quick and versatile for a lot of DIY projects. If you plan to make more traditional furniture, the Dowelmax will serve you better. I have a really basic Kreg jig that I use sparingly when needed. They can compliment each other; it doesn’t necessarily have to be one or the other. Though I understand buying both right away may not be feasible.

This might seem obvious, but for the other boards you want to joint, you just have to use the doweljig and position it the exact same way you did for the first board so they fit correctly right?
Yes. If you position the boards in the orientation they will be joined, you can mark the two reference faces and edges. That’s where the the jig will line up against.
Excellent crash course on the DowellMax! I've subscribed just because of this video. You presented in a short time what took me hours of watching other videos to learn and even threw in some tips and techniques that no one eIse had thought of. BTW, DowellMax should make a Systainer available - a couple of cardboard boxes don't do it justice. Yours is primo - I made something similar but doesn't look as professional. Well done!
Thanks Bruce! The Systainer isn’t a bad idea! I imagine it isn’t cheap but could be worth looking into.
The Systainer Mini T-Loc III (about $35) is a near perfect fit. I tossed the original cardboard box, but kept the form-fitted styrofoam from the original packaging and dropped it into the Mini systainer. There's just enough room along the sides to store all the accessories (additional guides, bits, attachments, etc).
Great video..👍👍👍👍 Will this work for a breadboard on a oak table as long as the middle dowel is glued only. Ream the outside dowels for wood movement but no glue. Cheaper than domino tool..
Thanks! I think I know the method you’re referring to with the Domino. Using 1/2” dowels might be possible though I’ve never tried it. I’m trying to think of why it couldn’t work but can’t think of anything.
Actually, pinning the dowels with a smaller dowel might be tough. The dominos are wider so pinning with a 1/4” or 3/8” dowel is simple. Doing that to a 1/2” dowel might affect the integrity of the dowel.

I did the same and ordered the main jig and the 1/4" set, along with the L plate for drilling in the middle of a board.
Once the 1/2" set comes back in stock I'll be grabbing that, an extra drill block for the 1/4" set and the miter attachment.
The systainer+kaizen foam setup is slick. I have plenty of kaizen foam, but I'll use one of my packouts for storage instead of buying a systainer.

Nice interesting video. Just wandering for does who use this in every project, is there a specific reason you don't switched to biscuits? (Domino is for me to expensive, so I leave this one out)
Thanks. From my understanding, biscuits do not provide the amount of strength a dowel or domino provide. I have limited experience with a biscuit joiner but feel they aren't as versatile as this jig can be.
I've purchased this jig and have been using it for about six months now. The very first time I used it everything worked perfectly and my joints were even and tight. WELL worth the money!

@@parillaworks Thank you! I used the jig for the first time last week making the frame of my work table. Glue-ups are the only difficult part I’ve encountered so far. Glue wants to start setting before I can get everything together. Your video may be the best tutorial on RUclips concerning the dowelmax.

If you intend to make furniture, tables, boxes, etc. then yes. If your focus is more on home reno type projects, you might find better things to focus your budget on initially.

I was hoping this could easily be used to drill holes for Cam Locks as as well because it's obviously top of the line en every way I can think of. But I really need to make a piece of furniture that can be easily disabled, using cam locks 😕
Ya this wouldn’t be very useful for that. I believe Woodpeckers sells a cross dowel jig which may be helpful for that type of hardware.

Considering how much the dowel Max costs I don't think you should have to scratch a centerline in in it should come with one already in it but besides that, I think it's a great product but expensive
Ya I think a centerline would be a somewhat simple addition to the manufacturing process. I guess it depends how much existing stock they have.
How long do their drill bits seem to last?
It’s hard to say honestly. It’s kind of like a power tool battery in that the drill bit will work for a while but once you change it, you will definitely notice the difference. But I don’t change them more than once a year.
@@parillaworks I should have been more specific; I asked about how long they last to decide if I should buy extra bits when I buy the jig. Your answer is helpful. Can any 3/8 drill bit be used(for the 3/8 jig), or does it need to be a dowel max bit?
@@bweber6256 DowelMax ships with slightly oversized bits 9.6mm to make fitting multiple dowels a little easier. Speaks to how accurate it is. These can be obtained from any place that carries them such as McMaster, or a really good local hardware store. However, any old 3/8 bit will work. Dowels will be very snug using 3/8. I'm currently drilling face holes with the 9.6, but end-grain holes with 3/8 so I don't have to adjust the depth stop in between, and it's working very well.

It isn’t self-centering. It references of one face and spacers can be added to approximate a centered hole. The key is to always line up on your reference face and edge.
I have this jig and it it awesome
Far quicker to make up some hardwood guides with drill guide inserts . Create them for each project etc .And spray them different colours .Then using tape with the colour marking on them ,mark up all cuts that need to be made with one Jig. I needed 4 for my last job and the materials cost me £23 . Took me 45 mins to make the set .Then It was IMPOSSIBLE to make a mistake !
