Sunday Brunch certainly prompted a LOT of tingly emotion in me.

@cassiopeia, for the Putting It Together song, were there cut-outs of Jake Gyllenhaal set on stage as there were of Mandy Patinkin for his performances? If not, what was done instead?

Who let that trumpet get away with such awful intonation on that last note?!?? 🥴

It’s a French Horn, and very high in its range.

@@AndrewGriffiths I was a French Horn player from middle school thru high school and even I didn’t catch that; I have *some* sympathy now but egads, that was painful.

I'd say, and hope, you probably had to see it live/be there - 'cause I am seeing, hearing, feeling nothing from this.
It looks like a decent level small college production. Jake could use some yoga, upper back and shoulders all kinda hunched.

The production overall was actually really good. Jake, however, was very stiff. When I saw this production it was like he was trying way too hard to 'act' rather than just settle into the character. It's clear he isn't 100% comfortable on stage, or that his acting style doesn't translate well to a live performance. He was very good, don't get me wrong. Having never heard him sing before this I was pleasantly surprised by his voice and some of his performance, but I never fully bought that he truly loved in this world.

Maybe he was trying method acting. Knowing Mandy Patinkin originated the role, he decided to watch his version and accidentally watched Patinkin doing Secret Garden all hunched over and thought to himself "well alright, Mandy won all kinds of awards, I guess let's do this!"

      @@elphbwckd212 thanks.
I only know him as a film actor.
He does not look stage comfy or even aware at all to me.

There's not a whole lot different you can do production-wise with this show. A few years earlier they had the revolutionary version from the West End, so this one was much more scaled down. I disagree about Jake. He is really really good.

How come he got this after little shop of horrors at encore and the phenomenon that is Ellen Greene who almost caused the theatre to crumble didn’t get anything. Not a cabaret engagement, a concert at Carnegie hall or a broadway show. She would have been wonderful as dolly or in on the twentieth century and instead we got two hammy performances from the once great Bette Midler and always boring Kristen cheneworth.
    Where is ellen?

mzmiller52 From what I remember reading, she's mostly retired, and came back as a one-off thing. But I agree that it'd be great to see more of Ellen Greene!

She was in the TV series "Pushing Daisies" with Swoosie Kurtz (they were sisters) and Lee Pace as the Pie Man. It only lasted 2 seasons in 2002/2003 (approx.), and was greatly underrated. After that, I've not seen her in anything else.
She would have been all wrong as Dot. But, I agree about Bette Midler as Dolly Levi. I wasted money on that piece of Sasquatch crap! I'll never understand why they didn't pull Betty Buckley from the "Hello Dolly!" tour, and let her do the Broadway production. I saw it in Chicago, and Betty was phenomenal!

Well, Jake's no Mandy... Mandy actually sang this slightly above the rest- you can hear it on the video from the 1984 Tonys. His voice was clear as a bell, and he commanded that stage. Honestly, was JG the best anyone could find? It's not like they mount revivals of this every few years, why waste it on a "star" with so little natural abilities?
