Don't give them extra cash. It's my humble request as an Indian. Pay what you owe them and a bit more if the service is good.
If one person gives them extra money (like in Harry's case 1000rs for a 50rs drink) they think all foreign tourists are walking ATM machines and once this becomes the norm, they expect it out of everyone and spoil the experience of many budget bagpackers who travel India on $10 a day (800-1000rs)

I knew someone (unfortunately he died unexpectedly) who is set up a recycling scheme in Hampi with local villagers. They benefited by earning money collecting plastic waste which would then be transformed into low grade oil. It worked really well until he left. It needs strong willpower and financial reward for those who are needy. Apparently there were death threats by some people from the oil industry. The technology exists but nobody's been held accountable that are the bigger part of the problem to fund them like said companies who make excessive profits, including on the back of supposed "scarcity". Capitalism and materialism eh? It's also a cultural problem though. Indians (/Asians, Naples people) don't see the plastic anymore. The insanity is the norm. We all need to do our best. B.t.w. going vegan for those who can is on average the best we can do for the planet, other sentient creatures and against pandemics - hence our future. Maybe Harry can do his bit by not supporting the unimaginable suffering. I am not referring to cases where there are no other options for the people, but the reality is no longer that in most cases. And India has more and more factory farms.
46% of oceanic plastic debris comes from discarded fishing nets and other equipment

And even if some people come, they just go back from the gateway, Guwahati.

    Hi Harry,
I hope you are well. I'm from Delhi, and I have seen these situations in other parts of Delhi as well. It's really disheartening to experience such conditions. However, there are many beautiful places here too. It's good to see that you went to Rishikesh and enjoyed your trip.
I have a concern regarding places like Rishikesh and Haridwar, which are religious and holy. Many foreign guests might not be aware of the traditions and people's sentiments. Unintentionally (except for a few), they might create some unexpected scenes like wearing shorts (sometimes bikinis), smoking, and consuming alcohol. These behaviors should be avoided. Ironically, some Indians also practice the same.
However, I have seen many vlogs and had personal talks with tourists in Rishikesh. I found that they have deep respect for these holy places because they studied about them before visiting. It gives a good feeling. I hope you will enjoy all your trips to India and our local cuisines 😊.
Don't mind my words; they are not a complaint, just a concern.
Wishing you happy and healthy travels.
    Regards,
    Praveen

This is the actual India. The heart of the India is filled with people from these section of society. Since they don't have a good life, their next generation falls into same category that leads to vicious circle. Govt can play a massive role in breaking that chain but indirectly they become that factor that keeps that vicious circle going. Free education and health is still a dream for many, corruption is rampant from bottom to top. India needs a massive change, i think it might take another 100 years sadly.

I had a phenomenal time touring all the awesome and well-maintained tourist places in Delhi last April. The weather was perfect, the main roads are wide and lined with trees and there is so much history and culture spread accross the ancient city. If you choose to literally visit a landfill area, which I don't think Delhi is the only city to have lol and slums, that's what you would have an experience of. Poverty is undoubtedly an issue in developing countries but to anyone outside India watching, there are amazing luxurious hotels to stay in and beautiful lush destinations to visit across the capital city! That said, enjoyyy Rishikesh💜
