I always go through the whole library in the beginning only once and add the Ableton tags to them (drums/fx/ambience etc). When I start a song, I go through my selected sample folder and it really increases the flow because the nice stuff is already sorted out :)

Honestly, this is the best advice given in 2020 by far.

You can try use "follow action" feature to play samples or loops randomly. Or import them to a drum rack like you do, add Arpeggiator and Random MIDI effects in Live - to make it even more interesting add Max For Live LFO tool to for example randomize Rate, Steps in Arpeggiator or Choices, Chance in Random. Sometimes it should give interesting effects :)

I do something similar. I usually just drop in a drum rack and put in a sampler in it. Then I throw in 30-80 kicks. The number is really not relevant. Its more so just an example since the max amount of samples you can throw in the sampler are 127. I do this for all percussion. I then scroll the samples auditioning them through a premade pattern that I made by midi mapping the sample selector in the sampler to a macro. This allows me to audition my samples in a similar process like you mentioned.

That's a great method! I do something similar as well 🤩 thank you for the insight!

Oh. My. God. This video is a game changer for how I should be working with drums in Live going forward! Why did I never think about it this way? So embarrassing.

Finding good samples is like THE most important thing for producers I think. You can have really great lead synths, external synths, great bass and stuff. If the drum samples sound bad, it's disturbing.
But to me the greatest way is by ear. Always trying to force me finding samples which fit together. just by ear And with the push 2 too. Push 2 is cool because you're not on the screen, you're really focus on what you ear.

Couldn't agree more! Sound selection is so crucial to great productions. It's probably the number one thing everyone should get good at if they want to stand out :)

that pluggin looks interesting. what i do is create a simple pattern, put all samples in a drum rack like you do, and then select all notes of the pattern and move them up and down changing the note therefore changing the sound. Probably the same as you do, but in a more manual (and free) way. Makes sense? 😛

Great vid. Totally agree, the process of going through hundreds of sounds can be deflating.
Fusing samples together to create is great, but also there's a kickdrum synth called Punchbox to create your own from scratch. Found out about it through Pig&Dan. Highly recommend!

I'm always on the lookout for great kick synth plugins. I've seen a few, but never really had the time to check them out. Have you tried Punchbox?

@@JanusRasmussen Yes I've been using it for 4 years now, I don't think there's anything else like it. It's great for creating your own kicks and the possibilities are endless

I feel the same about browsing through sample folders. I often start with a pattern in a basic drum rack and then swap the samples out while hearing them in context. But nowadays I like to start on hardware drum machines like my trusty Tanzbär, then spicing it up with foley recordings and live drums sounds. The immediacy of good drum machines can often be more inspiring than sample browsing, but it all depends on the mood of course. That plugin looks cool though!
Btw, 14 is my favourite and one of my most played songs lately :)

Great ideas! I'm happy to hear you like 14, it's one of my favourite of my own as well.
      I knew I should've gotten a Tanzbär when I had the chance!
