      SciShow Space dear scishow I have a question. In this video you mention that the moons atmosphere is very thin, but how thick is it exactly? My calculations suggest its about 3.85 kilometers. Is that correct?

    In fully expendable mode, the Falcon Heavy will be able to lift 64 tons to LEO, just six tons shy of SLS Block 1.
    Bigelow B330 is expected to weigh 20 tons. Obviously the Moon costs more delta-v than LEO, but to claim the Vulcan is the only rocket "in development" that can take the B330 to the Moon seems a bit disingenuous, especially when SpaceX claims the FH can take 16.8 tons to _Mars._
    Edit: from sources I could dig up, the Falcon 9 has a fairing diameter of 5.2 meters, while Vulcan will have a fairing diameter of 5.4 meters. Seems unlikely that 0.2m would be the difference... I couldn't find data on the B330's "packaged" dimensions, only that it will be 6.7 meters wide and 13.7 meters long fully expanded.

    • @Glenhh
      @Glenhh 6 лет назад +13

      I thought the same. They are correct at the moment but the FH and the BFR can handle this kind of payload easily and much more cost-effective.

    • @Cod4Paradox
      @Cod4Paradox 6 лет назад +2

      BA330 has too wide of a diameter to fit in Falcon Heavy! Can carry the weight but not the volume

    • @jameslemmate5177
      @jameslemmate5177 6 лет назад +16

      apparently they just repeated what ULA themselves claimed. If you go to their website, you can read an article about B330 where they say : "the only commercial launch vehicle in development today with sufficient performance and a large enough payload fairing to carry the habitat". I just checked and the fairing diameter seems to be roughly the same for both the Falcon Heavy and the Vulcan. Really I don't see why they would make such a claim. Sure it is "the only" fitting launch vehicle THEY are developing but that is not the way they said it.

    • @danieljensen2626
      @danieljensen2626 6 лет назад +10

      Glen TheMan Vulcan is not due until 2019, Falcon Heavy is supposed to launch next month. So either Falcon Heavy is too narrow for this payload or they are completely wrong.
      And even then they're already working on the Merlin engines for BFR, which I feel like should count for "in development".

    • @MrTomyCJ
      @MrTomyCJ 6 лет назад

      Maybe the problem with FH is the payload size, maybe it wouldn't fit in FH's fairing.

      NEY Industries Yeah, but it's due for first launch in the next month or two. If they were still a long way out from completion they would have probably already announced a delay. Since they haven't made an announcement like that I assume they're pretty much done making it.

    • @m_sedziwoj
      @m_sedziwoj 6 лет назад +1

      NEY Industries FH is base on Falcon 9, and Falcon 9 was change many times in past years, so what is point in build FH if you work on changing it core component? They delay development of FH until F9 stop be change, so you work on one change at the time. Is as you build car, but engine you put in change in size each month, so you must change your project too, most time all work you done throw to garbage.

    I think it's a great idea to develop a habit on the moon before we blindly try to build one on Mars right away 👽

    • @areszippy4434
      @areszippy4434 6 лет назад +1

      TRON KNOWS, I certainly agree. This is why I give props to the Trump Administration for redirecting NASA's focus to the moon. Yes, they may not have given Obama enough credit, especially because most of the Obama-era programs are still in place, but I see this as a good thing. Often times the new president completely changes NASA's missiins, which leads to a lot of money wasted.

      The problem is that a lunar settlement will require constant resupply and crew rotation, since Luna isn't really suitable for long term human habitation without a LOT of infrastructure. A Martian settlement would be able to be self sufficient with much less investment. If the lava tubes pan out though, that would make a Lunar settlement much more viable, although the low gravity would remain a huge problem

    • @Justwantahover

      I completely agree, it would be so much cheaper and easier than trying to go to Mars (we should walk before we run) and now with the advent of (at least one) lava tube it looks very exciting. Excited cos it's now even cheaper! They could develop robotics on Earth and (after they are "perfected") send robotics to the moon to deck out the lava tubes (made into a hotel or/and research place on the moon). Then humans can go there in luxury (instead of space suits and blow up tents). If humans decked out the lava tubes it would cost like thousands of times more...if you think about what humans would require instead of robotics to build stuff on the moon. Also the amount of humans would be limited (for the same reasons) but there could be heaps of robotic stuff like 3D printers, mobile robots, computing robots etc up there (all solar powered). And just a hand-full of humans need to be there on the moon. And that may not be all the time and maybe not at all. Surely they could try robotic construction on our own planet (if they haven't already developed auto construction tech). But the space industry could develop it and designate it to moon stuff for practice (while calculating some sort of difference in gravity factor). An inherent safety factor of 6. lol

      Falcon Heavy is narrower than Vulcan so I assume that's the problem. But yeah, they seem to not be counting BFR.

    • @mynameismatt2010
      @mynameismatt2010 6 лет назад +6

      The Falcon Heavy fairing is .2 meters narrower than the Vulcan fairing, and that's just the standard fairing, adjustments can be made for unique launch requirements. Fairing size is not a big enough factor to completely discount FH.
      The ONLY reason I could see them making this claim is in the very specific wording and the nature of the mission. The Vulcan second stage will be more powerful than the Falcon second stage, so it would be possible for the Vulcan second stage to sit in LEO for a while then enter LTO, while the Falcon second stage would have to move directly into a highly elliptical orbit before doing a secondary burn to enter LTO. Still, not including the BFR, which is most certainly "in development," is negligent.

    • @mynameismatt2010
      @mynameismatt2010 6 лет назад

      New Glenn is expected to have a 13 ton payload to GTO capacity, which wouldn't be good enough to get 20 tons to LTO.

  • @Sembazuru

    The APOD two days ago apod.nasa.gov/apod/ap171025.html was of the Lunar Marius Hills and a hole. The hole that they highlighted they state is nearly 100 meters down. So out of curiosity, knowing that the Lunar gravity is way lower than Earth's, I wondered if that was a survivable jump. Unfortunately, probably not. While it would take about 2 minutes, 3 seconds to make the fall, one would be going around 40mph. Unless there was a trauma center near that opening, one might die from injuries from the impact. Parkour landing techniques might help, but one also has to worry about damage to one's protective space suit... But, on the other hand, "jet packs" on the moon (with simple compressed air propellant) might be enough to keep your fall from going too fast. If so, that would be a neat way of returning to your habitat in a lava tube after a Lunar surface prospecting trip.

    i enjoy watching Caitlin talk science. i attribute it to the perpetual smiling, and lack of snarkiness or smirk or whatever you wanna call it. all could learn from her, to be a bit more appealing in youtube video presentation. being very cute doesn't hurt either, but that's beside the point!

    The Falcon Heavy is able to lift more than the Vulcan so it's not true what is said in the vide, there will be 2 rockets (that I know of) that will be capable of lifting it up. Moreover, the Falcon Heavy will probably get tested within a month so 1-2 years before the Vulcan will even be fully developed.

    Step 1: be rich af or find a way to become.
    Step 2: create a lunar base
    Step 3: gather vast amounts of helium-3, and send it back to earth
    Step 4: wait until fusion energy is developed or invest in development.
    Step 5: Use previously gathered helium to bolster lunar mining through fusion tech.
    Step 6: Ally with a global power to protect lunar installations and operations.
    Step 7: Be the sole proprietor of said helium and become the new energy giant of the world. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

After listening for 30 seconds or so, it feels like the hosts are yelling in my ears, and I have to turn the volume way down from where I normally have it on youtube. Maybe you could add some noise compression to the voices, or normalize to a lower level? Either way, I'll keep watching!
