    hi max im almost 100% sure i'll be in middlebrook bc of the honors llc so what is your opinion on the distance from east bank classes/how easy is it to get around
    also do you know if the roach problem is solved pls say yes

    • @maxapritchard
      @maxapritchard  2 года назад +2

      hi! the distance is a little bit of a struggle, i'll be honest - it's about a 10 minute walk from Middlebrook to the nearest East Bank classes, which can be tricky, especially in extreme weather. luckily, it's pretty easy to get to most of the far East Bank classes pretty quickly using the bus system. also, bringing a bike or scooter makes getting around much easier
      i think the roach problem is solved? i didn't hear of any towards the end of second semester so it probably should better now!

    • @maxapritchard
      @maxapritchard  Год назад +1

      that's a tough one - I know a lot of CFANS classes are in St.Paul, but for a specific major the best way to approach it may be to look at the major catalog and your likely first-year classes and to enter those classes into Schedule Builder, which will show the current building used for each class. This should help give an idea of which campus you'll be likely to spend more time on during Freshman year!

      Yeah, it sounds like applying for the Design LLC could be great! At the same time, LLCs aren't the only thing to consider, so there might be other factors that make other halls preferable. But overall, I do think Sanford would be a pretty good choice

    • @maxapritchard
      @maxapritchard  Год назад +1

      I would probably recommend Superblock if proximity to classes is a priority, as I believe most of the medical classes are closest to it, and I know that the STEM classes are almost entirely on or next to the mall on East Bank. They all have plenty of double rooms; I think Pioneer has the most three-person dorms, so if you're especially trying to avoid that then I'd rank Pio lower, while Centennial has lots of singles - I would probably recommend Frontier. Ultimately, though, when you register for classes you can rank double rooms highest, so it doesn't matter too much how many doubles the respective dorms have

    What do you recommend for an engineering student?

    • @maxapritchard
      @maxapritchard  2 года назад

      I think Frontier is probably the best hall for engineering students - it has the Taylor House and WISE LLCs, which are both for CSE students. It also generally seems like one of the better residence halls.
      Any of the halls on East Bank should be alright, though, as that's where (almost) every engineering class will be located.

      @maxapritchard  18 дней назад +1

      Hello! So sorry for this very delayed response - Comstock is probably the best location for walkability, it's in a super central location. Sanford is great if you want to spend lots of time in Dinky, it's probably the closest dorm to food/grocery options. Superblock is also in a pretty ideal location if your classes will mostly be on east bank, which I believe they should be for most CLA majors

    Which housing option would you say is best for making friends and community

    • @maxapritchard
      @maxapritchard  5 месяцев назад

      That's a great question! I've heard Bailey is great for community-building within the dorm as it's so relatively isolated, although that makes it harder to connect with friends/community outside the St. Paul campus. Many of the floors at Middlebrook formed close-knit communities. Superblock is the best in terms of simply being around the largest number of students, and there are usually a lot of people socializing in the volleyball/basketball area between the buildings when the weather is nice; a lot of the socializing in Superblock does tend to be more partying-oriented than other halls, which could be a positive or negative depending on your preference. I've also heard that it's relatively easy to connect with people in Comstock, and its location makes it a good spot for easily accessing events and traveling to other dorms.
      That's all a pretty brief overview, feel free to ask any follow-up questions that come to mind!

    what do you recommend for a possible graphic design student or mortuary science student??

    • @maxapritchard
      @maxapritchard  Год назад

      From my research, it seems that the majority of graphic design classes are held in McNeal Hall in the St. Paul campus, which would make Bailey likely the best option in terms of ease of getting to classes & travel time. Mortuary science classes are currently mostly held in Jackson Hall, which is quite close to both Comstock and Superblock.

    high school senior looking to apply for housing. what should I know about LLCs? are they worth it to apply for, or is it not much different from applying through the normal route?

    • @maxapritchard
      @maxapritchard  Год назад +2

      great questions! in my experience the application process does not change much due to llcs - you essentially just indicate your interest when you list your preferred residence halls, but you shouldn't have to complete any extra steps to be admitted to them. one important thing to know is that they take priority over dorm preference, so if you select an llc that's not in your favorite dorm and you get accepted to the llc, you'll be selected for that over any other dorm
      as for them being worth it - i was in the honors llc freshman year, and from mine and others' experiences i can say that they don't add too much, there generally aren't a lot of like resources or events made available by being part of them (though this will absolutely vary by llc). but, all of them do lead to you being around other members of your llc a lot and likely spending lots of time with those people, depending on how you prefer to make friends and socialize. so in that respect, they can have a large impact, and whether they are worth it will really depend on whether you'd like to be living surrounded by people from the llc.
      apologies for the long response, but i hope some of this has helped! i'd be more than happy to clarify or answer more questions too!

      @@maxapritchard thanks! thats helpful. did you like living in middlebrook when you were in the honors llc? i'm wanting wherever i end up staying to be quiet (so i can sleep and study).
      I'm also looking into the social justice llc, esp since it's in pioneer. do you have any input on that?

    • @maxapritchard
      @maxapritchard  Год назад +2

      @@anniezhang347 there were definitely pros and cons to living in Middlebrook - but a big pro was absolutely that it was very quiet, especially compared to other dorms. most of the floors never get loud enough to really interfere with sleeping or studying, and it's very much a peaceful environment to go back to after classes or at night. it can feel a little disconnected from campus, with so many events and activities taking place on East Bank, and it can be easy to feel disconnected from the social scene, although all of this does also mean that Middlebrook residents tend to bond and form very close friendships!
      one thing about the honors llc is that - while it still absolutely helps with finding a community - it may be a little harder to make as many connections in it compared to other llcs because the common factor (being an honors student) isn't quite as, like, unifying or specific as most other llcs, where you're slightly more guaranteed to find very similar people, if that makes sense. but still, almost everyone i knew in the honors llc made at least a few really good friends in it!
      i haven't heard much about the social justice llc, but it seems like an excellent group! and yeah i've only heard good things about Pio, really, most people agree that it's one of the best dorms on campus

    • @maxapritchard
      @maxapritchard  18 дней назад

      I do have quite a few friends who lived in Bailey freshman year, and they all seemed to have a pretty good experience! Because Bailey is relatively isolated, it seems like its residents form really strong bonds and make close connections (this is probably even more true for those in the LLCs!). The travel to east bank can be a bit difficult but really isn't that bad; while the biggest downside is probably feeling a little disconnected from the rest of campus, Bailey is perfect location-wise for CFANS classes and has a really strong community

    Which one would you recommend for someone with a psychology major and a criminology minor? I do want to make friends too.

    • @maxapritchard
      @maxapritchard  3 месяца назад

      It looks like the intro psych and criminology courses are on west bank, so Middlebrook could be good for getting to those; however, you're likely to still have some classes on east bank, and Middlebrook can feel a bit isolated from most of the events on campus. It looks like a lot of the 3000 level psychology classes are on the north side of east bank, so Sanford could make sense! And Pioneer and Frontier are both good Superblock spots for socializing.
      For choosing a hall close to the classes you'll be taking, consider searching those classes in schedule builder and checking where they've usually been held! - schedulebuilder.umn.edu/
