  • Before buying a boat, I crewed across the Pacific Ocean on a variety of different boats for the duration of about a year. I then thought I knew enough about boats, but really, I didn't. Looking back at these solo sail experiences, before setting off on long solo voyages, it would have probably been better to first get some more boat ownership experience close to shore. Which would be my advice to you. Nevertheless, I hope you learn something from the struggles I had to go through in these videos, in my learning process of becoming a comfortable boat owner

45 days I traveled through New Zealand from the Northernmost point to the Southernmost point, then
100 days I traveled by motorbike through Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia, then
365 days I traveled in my self-built campervan from Kyrgyzstan to Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan, then
365 days I traveled with this van through Iran and Pakistan, then
180 days I built an off-grid log cabin in the woods in Spain, then
180 days I restored an old sailboat in Guatemala, then
180 days I traveled with this sailboat from Guatemala to Honduras, Cuba, Jamaica, Bahamas, Turks and Caicos and the Dominican Republic

Hey Huub, you should have mentioned that you requested a cruising permit from Customs in Montego Bay to sail to Negril but you were found in Black River. Also your documentation for your vessel reflects a different name from what is written on the vessel itself. The name clearly visible on the stern of your vessel is "Limonada" and your registration says "Tait Tait" . It could be for these reasons your vessel was boarded by police and customs.

@@dannyandrose dude! Jamaica is one of the most struggling nation in that region under heavy debts by IMF and world bank. More than 50% of it’s foreign exchange comes from tourism industry and almost 50% of it’s employment depends on tourism. If they stop what you are referring as ‘extortion’, then you can imagine about the disaster that can occur. So instead of complaining we should motivate people to visit Jamaica and other nations undergoing the same problems and support them by paying those permits. People pay thousands of dollars on cruise ships and buy millions worth of yachts and I’m sure they won’t mind paying 35 bucks which keeps the country running.

Perhaps you missed it then and watch Huubs other videos , he already paid his permit as he stated . they forced him to run back and forth wasting his gas so he would have to buy more .
That's just the tip of the iceberg .
Its hard to grasp why you know so much about the country debt but you don't call that extortion or you imply only I refer to that as extortion ... Its 100% extortion by force of manipulation of abusive tactics .
Perhaps this is what thousands of tourists have already succombed to and is why there's no longer yachts docked in their water or in their docks , perhaps the abuse is why so many tourists no longer desire to go out of their way to be abused any longer .
Perhaps you really fail at understanding how tourism really works .
There's only a fraction of the populace which take these tours & travels & ABUSE of tourists travels very fast among fellow tourists , we are not an endless pit of so called " Stupid Americans " .
It sounds as though you might just be the crooked official that forced HUUB to run out all his gas ...

Soldiers now come as I'm on a bridge in no man's land ... They tell me I cannot stay on the bridge and will be shot at if I'm still there at sunset ... I ask how can I get back into Zimbabwe who can open the gate ... I'm told he can because he owns the bridge and a toll fee ... I'm now in Zimbabwe illegally having a beer with immigration and çustoms but they off work now ... be at the gate in the morning at 6am or they will arrest me as they start work at 6.30am ... but for now I'm OK as long as I keep buying the beers 😂😂 Didn't sleep that night ... got to love people strange creatures. .. at least when you are at sea you can avoid them ... Do not try to understand the illogical; it is bureaucracy.
40 years ago you would not have to suffer this bureaucracy unfortunately we have since tripled the population of the planet to 7.8bn and they have to be kept occupied. This is nothing compared to some places in the world and it will only get worse as more and more control measures are put in place, with fees, charges and duties levied at every opportunity to raise income to pay the ever growing public sector.
Freedom as experienced in the last century is I am afraid now all but gone and freely sailing the high seas (international waters) is also becoming a distant memory with ones movements being constantly tracked. Yachts are yet another easy target to raise revenue, just look at what has happened in the Med.
Once you give someone a gun and a uniform then all rules have gone out of the window, so just go along with whatever they say and keep the cameras rolling.

    Safe travels!!!
    Be careful!!!

I've been to crazy Jamaica a couple times and I'm never going back. Tourists and boaters should just stop going there.

Everyone knows not to sail to Jamaica. It’s a damn shame too the place really needs the revenue. Sucks to suck I guess.

A lot of these comments disparaging the local system is very arrogant. Hub didn’t understand the system which was the cause not embezzling and corruption. These kind of comments just show how ignorant and self important pampered westerners are. Hub dealt with it superbly and learned something along the way.

Probably age discrimination, maybe it’s better to wait until you are 65 years old and most people will leave you alone😀.
A young guy there usually means trouble.

Now we know why there are so few boats in the lonely anchorages.... so rich foriegners don't want to have free(loaders) enjoying the waters and shore that they are paying for exclusive access to.... meanwhile it does give the locals a job, even though they don't know what or why they are doing it, mon lol

You are a very brave and accomplished sailor. "Keep one hand for the boat and one for yourself." Keep safe and be wise at all times when confronted by armed government officials. Jamaica sadly is definitely off limits; it is a mixed bag , a beautiful tropical island, 'la violencia' on every corner and because of history colonialism if you are just an ordinary white dude " Wid no money to grease palms" you are made to feel unwelcome. Why ?just sheer nastiness. I know because I am a white- skinned West Indian who is ashamed of the way these Jamaicans are treating You." Yah don't hav yoh full documents." Nonsense! They are just taking their resentment out on some one who is vulnerable. The guy who stopped you from motoring up the Black River is another ignoramus.

I'm sorry you had a bad experience in Jamaican waters. We have a very bad gun and drug smuggling especially in the area that you went to. Your age, boat, your documentation (or lack thereof) makes you very suspicious to local law enforcement. If there is a next time, just stick to the north coast, Negril, Montego Bay, Ocho Rios and Port Antonio (the tourist areas) where you will find a lot of other sail boaters. Greetings from Montego Bay (my home)
