  • This was a history lesson and autobiographical. You can get away with that when you've got a story to tell, and Hank definitely had a story to tell.

Haven’t heard this song in a while. To me, this is one of his best. All about his life and how he found his way.

Believe this was album 5 after the fall. It’s odd how different Hank was before and after the fall. The man and the music. It’s really two different people

I don't know if he still does but Hank had a cabin at the base of Ajax mountain many years after his fall.

Thanks Don, people don’t understand how close to death Hank was that day. His brain was exposed for hours until rescuers could reach him. Hanks friends son stayed with him while he went for help. He was instructed to not let Hank go to sleep. Walt talked to him for hours. Thanks again Don for reacting to this song.

This is one of my favorite songs by Jr. If not for the cold and his friends son keeping him awake he may not have lived

I'm a born Texan, but my great-great-grandparents came to Texas from Henry County, Alabama by wagon in 1871, so I can say that I'm an Alabaman too. Very proud to be a Son Of The South.🎻🪕🎸

Been waiting years for someone to finally react to this one. I guess this is one of his that is underappreciated and overlooked.
I like have it vaguely tells the true story of the incident that almost ended his life, and he also explains the timeframe where he made that style switch in his career. I also love how he turns it into a positive message in the last verse, by using a mountain metaphor that happens to relate both to that identity crisis with his career, and that life crisis in which he nearly lost his life.

This song plays over the end credits of the movie about his life, "Living Proof: the Hank Williams, Jr. Story". I always liked the movie and this song.

Hi Don, thanks to you and Nathan for this one, certainly it was written early in his transformation from who he was (a Hank Sr. cover artist?) to who he became ( a mega-star in his own right that became a legitimate country music icon in his own way).

One of my favorites from him. Alot of his hits were written when he was recovering from his accident.

Love the reaction, another great song of Hank Jr.s. I agree with some of the others that you should check out Feelin Better soon. Also, there is a documentary/video/concert that Hank officially put out in the last 80's/early 90's called Full Access - you should check it out to see some of how Hank lives his live as well as come excellent concert footage. They show Hank at his cabin in Montana that actually looks out over to the mountain he fell off of.

In my opinion this the best album Hank Jr ever had. Habits Old and New is a magnum opus, Whiskey Bent is next... the rest of his catalog has some lazy writing and filler songs. "Habits" however is a sit back and push play album.

@@RockN2Country I did notice it a while back on another song but not sure which one. But it has been a rare occurrece. You should listen to feelin better by Hank Jr., i think you would enjoy it.

@@RockN2Country Maybe you are just reacting to a different recording than folks are used to hearing. I have noticed that a few times.
In this case, this one sounded like the version I'm accustomed to hearing, but it still seemed off a little for some reason.

The "her" he's referring to in the song is not Alabama. It is Hillary and Holly's mom Becky. He had just started dating her when the accident occurred, but they had already declared their love for each other. He has spoke in interviews that he just wanted to get back to her. In the movie it portrays it the other way, that he didn't want to see her. But in the book he says that he did, and he hoped that she would accept him, scars and all.

Hank was referring to Alabama, his old home land.
