A Securely Attached Childhood Does Not Prepare You For Boarding School | AEM #119 | Anne Power
What is attachment theory? And how does your attachment style affect your time at boarding school?
In a fascinating conversation, leading attachment expert, Anne Power, talks about the four attachment styles of secure, avoidant, anxious ambivalent and disorganized.
What are their experiences of boarding school like? Does the securely attached child do well?
Does everyone come out of boarding school with an avoidant attachment?
    Really interesting. Thank you, Anne

Anne Power, is a couple counsellor and has taught psychotherapy and supervision on university courses in London. She has published many academic papers on attachment and two books.
She started her counselling work thirty years ago. Her initial training was as a psychoanalytic psychotherapist with a special interest in attachment theory. Later she trained in a systemic model and this integration - of attachment and systemic thinking - matches with EFT (Emotionally Focused Couple Therapy) which is the model in which she is now developing her practice.
Annie posts on Instagram most days with supportive ideas about relationships - that's at 'and_attachment' Her TEDx talk provides a brief overview of attachment theory and has over 600k views.
Some of the questions and areas interest:
    1. I would love for you to share some of your journey. How did you arrive at doing what you do now?
    2. Would you please introduce us to attachment theory. What is it? Could you talk a little about the different forms of attachment? (p. 15)
    3. Could you please speak to how attachment theory relates to relationships? Why does connection to ourselves better equip us for relationships?
    4. What happens when a child with one of the 4 attachment styles arrives at boarding school?
    5. In your research will secure kids thrive at boarding schools? If not, why not? What happens to their relationship with their parents?
    6. What about avoidants. How do they cope with separation from home?
    7. How about ambivalents? How do they cope with boarding school?
    8. What about disorganized attachment? How is boarding school for them?
    9. Could you please speak about neurodivergent children? What is the impact for them of boarding school?
    10. How is the learning of each of these groups affected by boarding school?

An absolutely magnificent talk. You two really bring out the best in each other. And there is a great great deal of best to bring out in both cases. I feel I have learnt so much. Thank you very very much.

@@annepower2912 My pleasure Anne. I think you must be such a good therapist because you are very realistic about human relationships but never cynical or judgemental. You also celebrate the tremendous good and healing there can be in them. I really hope you have a great 2025.

Wow, thankyou Anne and Piers for a most enjoyable and enlightening discussion! 🤗
Piers, what I most like about you, and why I keep returning to your channel, is your authenticity, and the respectful and intelligent way you interact with your guests. There is always more to learn, and Anne's contribution has given me much food for thought... I will need to go back to the beginning of your video and take notes for following up...I'm not sure what category, or categories of attachment I fall under, but instinctly feel that you and Anne have provided a key to some deep-rooted questions I'm still searching for answers to, ( in my early 70's! )🤔

Good afternoon @LoneSeaEagleOfSkye, thanks for your kind words. I too found Anne to be so insightful. I saw her talk about the same subject at a workshop a few months ago and I found it so helpful. You might be interested in taking this quiz by Dr Diane Poole Heller which will give you a basic outline to what attachment style you are. Take care, Piers

Fantastic talk- really interesting. As a neurodivergent ex- boarder myself ( diagnosed in adulthood) - I hugely appreciate this particular topic also being discussed. Thank you 😊

My children were securely attached until the start of normal state primary school, they then struggled with it and didn't want to go in. I was pressured by the school and council to 'force' them in no matter what, this happened for years. I think this caused an Ambivalent attachment wound in my children. I instinctively realised this and homeschooled to repair. It took about a year and a half to recover.
