  • *Update* Just did this round trip on one charge. Charged to 100% same conditions and air conditioning on the whole trip. When I got home at night from the trip I still had 43% on the guess-o-meter. NOT BAD!! :-) Love this car!
    Today I take my first road trip in the 2019 Kia Niro EV. In total about 160 Miles round trip.
    Going was a mixture of Highway and local roads and the return was all highway.
    It was important for me to test this in real world driving conditions and to not drive the car like an EV. I drove it no different than my gas car.
    I started at a 69% charge and purposely did not charge the night before so I could try out an EvGo charger after the first leg.
    Overall I was very pleased with the efficiency and comfort on the trip and am very happy knowing that this car has the range for what I need it for.
    It also verified to me that I could do this trip on 1 charge if needed.

    Finally someone who drive an EV like a regular car. Not one time did I hear about rain, sleet, snow, wind and just about every weather condition that affects EV.
    I've seen so many EV drivers on RUclips and this seems to be a constant theme when driving an EV. To me it's a turn off from getting an EV if I'm worries about all these conditions. The average person just drive their cars. When they're low on gas you find the nearest Gas Station and keep it going. No I'm not negating the the condition but it's just too much focus on weather conditions and not just enjoying your EV. I love the Niro and plan to get one. Thank you for making your driving experience a real one. I stumble across this video and was very impress watching it. I am now a new subscriber.

    I was heavily considering buying the Tesla 3, and then someone suggested I look into this vehicle called the Kia Niro EV. Havn't made a purchase yet, but I'm pretty much sold on the Kia vs the Tesla. Seems like a very solid car with good build quality, along with some great features for the price.

      Deetroiter I agree. It is a great car. I love it. With that said, my next car will be a Tesla model 3. The amount of tech in the Tesla is way more interesting to me than the Kia. You do get a lot for the money but in some ways you are not getting a lot of the things you should be for a car north of 40k in the Niro.

    As this shows, even 'fast" 50kW charging means that it takes about an hour to recharge (20-80 pct). Those free parking charge sites at like 6 or 10 KW - that's pretty much a useless thing at this point with a full range EV. An hour is not out of the question, but far from ideal. For us a road trip generally consists of about 200 miles each way which we do at least once or twice a month. With 50 KW charging this adds 2 hours In total to that trip. I am still waiting for 150 KW charging. However if you only do road trips occasionally and not too terribly far, looks like a fantastic car.

      Eric Peltzer - The Niro EV is capable of 230+ miles in most weather, just under 200 in sub °C. So your 200 mile trip could be done, with a full charge. Plug it in at the end, go do what you need to and when you return to the car, you’ll have enough for the return journey. Back home and you can charge again. Try not to look at charging as wasted time. More a chance to do whatever you were going to do, while the car charges.

    Great video and channel. We leased our Niro EV EX on the 19th of May having seriously considered the Hyundai Kona EV but wanted the extra room and the extra standard safety features (smart cruise, etc) without the higher MSRP (and $5,000-$10,000 markup Hyundai dealers in our area of S. CA are adding to the MSRP) and we are so happy we leased this car. It's fun to drive and we recently took "Zeus" on his first road trip here in S. California. We drove in mixed traffic (city and freeway) as well as over the highway 60 pass through the mountains (known as the Badlands) on our way back home to the desert (Palm Springs, CA) with the air conditioning on at all times. After traveling a total of 199 miles we still had 52 miles of range left. The extra range is a wonderful surprise and I have watched other videos where some are getting close to 300 miles. Thanks for starting this channel and for this great video.

    Thanks for sharing your trip. The Niro EV is starting to look like one of the most viable non-Tesla options for longer journeys. Great efficiency and you didn't even get to max out the fast charge rate, so the stops will only get quicker as more 150kW+ units come online.

    Showing the GOM and actual distance and speed is great to see the efficiency... I got my Kia Niro EV and notice the driver's seat is a little narrow/tight, and it feels like it is hugging me, similar to Chevy Bolt EV. I didnt notice this issue on my old Nissan LEAF... But you said your seats was comfy.. maybe I just need to "wear" in the seats an later I'll just get used to it being tight.. hmmm...

    Great video, showing the range and charging rate and efficiency and battery % and GOM... Lots of great info and explanation. I've got a Nissan LEAF now, and eager to upgrade to Kona Electric or this Niro EV. I also hate the flimsy dangling charge port covers. Looks cheap. They could have done it with solid hinge/door like Nissan LEAF or Chevy Bolt EV....

      Andrew Le Thank you so much. To be honest the dangly doors are the only thing I have found so far that I don’t like. The range has far exceeded expectations. I was 2 hours away from getting a Leaf Plus. I had a noon appointment to go pick it up. At 10am I just happened to look one last time of any Niro Ev’s were around and there were 2.
      If you don’t need a lot of space, the Kona is a good car. But if you are used to the space in your Leaf you might think it is too small like I did. Let me know what you get!

Yeah, I am used to my LEAF interior size.. I sat in a Bolt once and felt it was smaller/cramped than my LEAF, though i think it might be the same interior size.. and I sat in a Kona gas model and felt it alittle small too. I sat in Niro EV backseat and it felt spacious compared to my LEAF.. so... yeah...

    The Niro should be able to charge up to 75kw. But you needed a 100-150kw charger. That was a 50. And was definitely the bottleneck.
    The car would have charged almost twice that fast.. up to a point.. probably 65% or so.
    Should go really fast at full speed up to that point.
    Nice car... Definitely a good choice.

    Really good video! A few questions, 1) I liked that you took your hands off the wheel on that straight road and showed how long the car would go without the warning message showing. Will the car actually steer, at least some, on slight bends in the highway? Also, on the bottom of the panel near the drive selector wheel there is a button marked “P release”. What is that for? Thanks again, just subbed

    • @niroevj3477
      @niroevj3477  5 лет назад +1

      Thanks for the questions! Yes the car will steer around bends on the highway. It does a pretty good job at it if they are normal highway bends. P Release is for manually releasing the parking brake. It will automatically set and disengage the parking break when you shut off the car and switch into drive. I am guessing if you wanted to manually disengage it if you were in neutral or some other situation you could use that button. Thanks again!

    • @oman9999
      @oman9999 5 лет назад +1

      NiroEvJ Thank you again for all the info/videos and quick response! That was my guess on the P release but I doubted myself because in my car you pull up on the electronic parking brake button to set, push down to release. I thought maybe the same here and then there was that separate P release button. Thanks for clearing that up for me. Very cool on the lane keep assist, or is that lane follow assist? I know the Niro has both, thinking the lane keep assist holds the center of the lane as best as possible and the lane follow assist has more to do with keeping a safe distance from the vehicle ahead of you. Is that about right? These newer vehicles are amazing, I just had an Infiniti Q50 loaner and was amazed how that lane keep system followed the slight bends around the highway and I could keep my hands off the wheel for good stretches of time. No message popping up on the Infiniti though to grab the wheel, was up to me to take over when I needed to. This tech is amazing and we are living in interesting times.

    Thanks for the video - I'm in England and have had an e-niro for 6 weeks or so now. I noticed you drive in ECO mode. I do the same and don't think it hampers the driving performance too much - it's still a nice drive and quick when you need it. Were you surprised at how good the driving assist features were?

    • @niroevj3477
      @niroevj3477  5 лет назад +3

      I love ECO and do not feel the need to put it on any other mode. The only thing I noticed is how quickly it responds when in the other modes. ECO can be a little lazy feeling when you start from a stop. Still, I do not think it is bad enough to keep it in any other mode.
      I think the driving assist features are great. I have adaptive cruise and lane keep assist on my 2017 Honda Civic and love using it on long drives. The thing that the Niro does better is it follows the lanes better. The Civic bounces from lane to lane whereas the Niro stays in the middle for the most part.
      The ONLY thing I wish I had on the EX trim here in the US, is parking sensors. I backed my brand new Niro into my mother in law's car forgetting it was parked behind me. Scratched my bumper. A video coming soon of the fix for that.
      Thank you for the comments! Glad you are liking yours as well

    None of my local dealers have these yet, so I haven't been able to get an answer to this first-hand: When charging (both AC or DC-Fast), are you able to use the climate controls?
    I currently have a Hyundai Sonata PHEV, and with mine, you cannot start the car, nor use the climate controls when plugged in. This hasn't been an issue for me in my PHEV, as I am not stranded at remote charging stations for any length of time. But my next vehicle is going to be an all-electric, and I live in Las Vegas. So being able to run the climate controls while charging is a big deal. Can you confirm, for sure, whether you can run the heat/AC while charging (both level 1/2 and DC-fast)? This is literally a deal breaker for me. Apparently the Tesla's CAN, if they have more than 20% charge. I'm hoping the Niro EV can as well.

    • @niroevj3477
      @niroevj3477  5 лет назад +5

      Yes you can. It is not a problem. You press the start button twice without your foot on the brake and you are able to use the climate controls and pretty much do everything but drive. Good question! Thanks!

    Did you buy any after market floor mats for the Niro EV or just sticking with factory floor mats? How’s the passenger space with a child seat in the rear center or rear side? How’s the storage space in the front?

    • @niroevj3477
      @niroevj3477  5 лет назад +2

      dionaeaqi07 sticking with the factory floor mats. We don’t get much snow where I live and the factory ones are nice. Passenger space is not an issue. I was really surprised just how much space is actually in the second row. I am 6’1” and have tons of space sitting in the second row behind the drivers seat set in my driving position.
      Storage in the front is okay. Normal glove box. Space in the center on the floor. Center console is a little small under your elbow. It is not mini van space. Keep in mind this is a small car. For every day use it is adequate.
      Try and test drive one. I’m sure you will find there is more space than you would think on a car this size. It has much more space than the Kona.
      Trunk space is just okay. I lowered the floor the get a few extra inches and have no problems fitting all of our stuff for the beach. A stroller will fit fine

      @@niroevj3477 Wow, that is much higher than I expected. Though totally agreed. With home and/or other less expensive charging options when you don't need DC Fast Charging this isn't really that bad in the grand scheme of things. Was there an additional session fee or taxes on top?
      I know the charge rates vary depending on what city and/or State you are in but still. I may have re-do my math (admittedly not my best subject) on a trip I worked out 'on paper' knowing the distance traveled, approx battery % remaining and charge price/min & duration. It was even an EVGo 50kW charger in the equation. Hmm....it was $.27/min*30 minutes or $8.10 in the Los Angeles Area. That rate at 45 mins would be $12.15. Oh and I'm probably forgetting tax, so actually that sounds about right depending on what your actual charge price/min was. Keep on doin' what yer doin man! Congrats on one sweet ride. Test drove one yesterday and was super impressed. IMHO it's got the logical interior like an eGolf but doesn't feel like you're driving a tank...feels more like a Bolt without the Chevy-future-cheesy interior to it. I dig it.
