Right before the end of the year Fender had blow out sales on the Squier Contemporary Strats. I got one for 270ish and figured I'd use it as a modding platform because I love the metallic sky burst blue color. Honestly though, only thing it needs is shorter saddle screws, because once I set the neck and action the bridge unfortunately became a cheese grater on my hand. The pickups and electronics are perfectly fine. I just can't see stepping up to this Standard series, I just don't see the value, I'd definitely go G&L or Sire at the price point or just get a slightly used or dinged Player 2. The Squier line is damn good is all I know, I think price and feature creep is probably more warranted with that lineup than with proper Fenders. I know people have cried havoc about Epiphone prices but they have damn good guitars for the money that arent the pricey signatures. Personally (selfishly), I would prefer to see a tier up Squier, especially with the contemporary stuff but that's risky, that's sadly way less in demand than the same ol', same ol', which is still what people want. Folks upset at the value proposition, I totally understand that and agree but folks blaming Fender's greed.. hey they make what their customers want and they're going to keep trying to make it for as cheap as possible to save costs. If you want them to change, buy the competition. I have a feeling these are going to sell well.
Just buy one of the numerous used MIMs for maybe even less, with better specs. The multi piece poplar body, Laurel board or the Affinity style maple with a glued on satin board makes it a piss take IMO. No more than a re branded Affinity. As its made in the far East, they should be able to make the Player 2 for this price....
@@frankzappa951there’s nothing wrong with poplar bodies or ceramic pickups. Stop smoking the guitar snobbery crack pipe! I hand build guitars with poplar bodies and ceramic pickups that sell for four times this.
Fender is in a tough spot at this price point no matter what. Either they make Squier more expensive, or they do this - it was always going to be a tough sell. Other brands' Indonesian made models that I've owned have been perfectly cromulent, I'm expecting this to be about the same.
i dont think this line will be around much longer if they cant lower the price by $100 or maybe include a soft case or something. as they sit right now, and they have to do compete with PRS se, or any other Chinese guitars that are selling a lot better quality of guitar for 600 dollars
It’s a beautiful guitar and your playing is excellent. I can’t hear the difference between those pickups and every other Telecaster I’ve played. It sounds like a Telecaster to me! So it’s not going to make a difference for a couch guitarist like myself.
Fenders should be made by fender. None of this fender licensed to make in a cheaper factory with cheaper parts, by fender. They just used squier made parts for it. Its where the outcries lie. If fender made these in mexico, I would have no issues with it, as long as its is genuine fender parts. Fender loves to brand themselves as genuine, and these Indonesian fenders aren't genuine in any way. They should have just called it a squier standard instead. I would be totally fine with that that. Because it seems like the inflated pricetag is mostly reflective of its headstock logo, even then it looks lowend. Lando gets the nice comments because he's not going to take it serious, because you know he has a hard time even defending fender with this one.
I think it sounds and looks fine but it may be too much money for what your getting . If the tarriffs go through that may be the only one I can afford. It seems like this may be a more lateral move from a CV squier tele😊
Complete cash grab from Fender, disappointed in these guitars, I don’t care that they are made in Indonesia, just put some soul into them, and give your customers quality for $599. These guitars if I had to guess cost fender about $65 to build so where is all that overhead going, you guessed it, in there pockets. Do yourself a favor research what is out there for that money. You can easily grab a Fender player or player 2 that’s basically brand new on reverb for $600 all day long. Take care.
@ I have a buddy that works for one of the big guitar companies over seas. Trust me you really don’t want to know. But a big part of it is the sheer volume of guitars coming from these factories. It’s a serious rabbit hole, but yeah they are totally produced sub $100 dollars.

RUclips infomercial makers are now facing some backlash from the guitar general public about these guitars for the simple reason that they are a poor value and have underwhelming at best features for the price RUclips influencers/infomercial makers are now going to have to face the reality that the bulk of their audience is in the situation of prices on everything continue to go up yet wages have remained stagnant or have gone down- this isnt something that can be ignored anymore Everyone knows for $600 USD you can get an excellent used Fender with better features that is better made, or you can get a new guitar from many makers that has dramatically better features and is made better In Canada these Standards are $839 which is *absurd*-$964 all in Paying $964 CAD for this is a complete and total waste of money and you’d feel like a fool
@ I don’t know if you *personally* are, but people on various guitar forums etc are pointing out the revealing and obvious difference in opinion from many in the public who view the Standard as a cynical corporate move by Fender- a cheaply made guitar with zero exciting features for $600 USD and the RUclips infomercial channels who simply don’t point this reality out as a strong negative It is becoming increasingly more difficult for the public to ‘trust’ (lol) guitar RUclips channels when they gloss over what the public sees as a significant con to the guitar- overpriced and underwhelming guitar with the fender logo. In the other hand people are doing their channels for money and that’s perfectly fine! But I think it’s obvious there is a significant barrier for someone who gets free gear or gear to review and return to say “yeah…Fender isn’t offering you anything at all worthwhile in this Standard model for $600 other than the sticker. It is a very bad value” We see this divide between the public and RUclipsrs with numerous models- the Jaguar models with eliminated features (so ‘modern’! lol), Epiphones models raising prices etc etc
I don't know why every guitar has to be exciting to every person. This is a budget guitar with a very good neck. I say in the video its audiences are younger guitarists who really want a Fender, and people who were maybe looking at a more expensive guitar but already know they're going to mod the shit out of it.
@@GetOffset perhaps ‘exciting’ isn’t the best word. It is a bad value guitar- the public knows it. Does a four-piece body make any difference to the sound? Of course not. Do the ceramic pickups sound good? It’s subjective but sure they are fine. Those things and other things are done because they are *cheaper* for Fender to do. It doesn’t have the perception of quality and instead gives off the impression of some late-stage capitalism of taking advantage of your market based on the strength of your name brand.
@@Lomoholga2 I agree 100%. I have a Classic Vibe Tele that sounds and feels better in every significant way than my two Fender Players. I know that each guitar is unique, but generally speaking, it seems silly to buy the Fender Standard UNLESS money is no object.
Guitarists are dumb. Sorry, but it’s true. These are made in the same Cor-Tek factory as a lot of other guitars. It’s a $600 guitar. People routinely buy Squiers and put Fender logos on them. They only care about the name. US made Fenders are not automatically better. The tuners are either Ping or Gotoh. Poplar is a great wood for bodies. Multiple pieces don’t matter. I’m a pickup maker and alnico magnets aren’t automatically better. Everyone seems to love gold foils these days, a those are ceramic magnets.
3 to 4 pieces of wood for the body, poplar instead of alder, Indian laurel instead of rosewood, ceramic pickups instead of alnico, and on the teles for some reason, it’s a pcb switch? I don’t care if it said Fender or Squier, $600 is too much for that quality of guitar. Also at that price point, I shouldn’t have to mod my guitar to make it sound decent.
But in the end... 2 words to say.... Harley Benton. The sum of this story is, East asia got there shit together with guitar building. Heritage brands are focusing on catering to the rich, and paying and fortune for a playable guitar is for all intense, and purposes... Obsolete... In the end, people hear with their ears. Headstock logos don't matter if you sound good. Practice makes perfect. Gear makes broke.
I mean, Christopher doesn't see the value, and that's cool. Other people probably will. I don't see where the issue is. I understand that some people don't think the guitar is worth the increase in the price, and I address that in the video. Whether you think a better neck and better hardware/QC is worth the money is up to you as the buyer. Speak with your wallet.
@@GetOffset Haha, very diplomatic response! I was just being snarky, I personally dont see much value here at this price point, but as always I appreciate your content and takes!
The only losers are the haters. There are a lot of younger players that feel that they need the right brand name on the headstock. And that is okay. If Fender doesn’t make a move like this, they will loose out to other brands. And Indonesian factories have shown they know how to make a guitar.
these are aimed at those that want Fender on the headstock but have a Squire budget. And they are stupid enough to pay double for Fender to just put a Fender decal on a Squire.
It sounds a lot like a "guitar" being played through an "amp". Ceramic is bad, so very bad. It's for losers. These will sell like hotcakes overseas. Mod platform, code for the pickups are an affront to God and man.
Hah! I think these will sell pretty well all over. Gotta disagree with you on the ceramic pickups! I know I call them "fine," but they're better than I expected them to sound.
Ceramic pickups sound fine and way better distorted than alnico pickups. Even my $2k Schecter has a ceramic pickup and it's the best sounding guitar I've ever heard. They get a bad rep, because cheap guitars usually have $1 ceramic pickups in them.

I gest played one at the Music Store there pretty nice. In my opinion there better than the Squires. Sounds pretty good
Is that an frfr cab behind you?
No, just a regular cab with a Jupiter speaker
Just buy one of the numerous used MIMs for maybe even less, with better specs. The multi piece poplar body, Laurel board or the Affinity style maple with a glued on satin board makes it a piss take IMO. No more than a re branded Affinity. As its made in the far East, they should be able to make the Player 2 for this price....
Eh, I don't know about that.
Nice Polaris shout out!
Have to!
Someone been smoking that high grade at Fender. Get a classic vibe and don’t fall for the BS.
If that's what you want to do, that's fine. I have a lot of Squiers, and this has a better neck and fretwork.
@ Popular body, ceramic pickups - better squires out there but I hear ya.
@@frankzappa951there’s nothing wrong with poplar bodies or ceramic pickups. Stop smoking the guitar snobbery crack pipe!
I hand build guitars with poplar bodies and ceramic pickups that sell for four times this.
The classic vibes are a much better value for the dollar.
After modding you could just buy a Player II...if you wanted 😊
I'd want to change the pickups in the Player II TBH. They're growing on me, but I still want a different bridge pickup.
My$200 Squier Sonic red/black Tele is all the mod platform I need. Just sayin'...
My Chinese sub $200 Leo-Jaymz T-type has alnico v but why Fender used ceramic in this is wild 😂
599 for a 299 guitar....Sweet!
Fender is in a tough spot at this price point no matter what. Either they make Squier more expensive, or they do this - it was always going to be a tough sell. Other brands' Indonesian made models that I've owned have been perfectly cromulent, I'm expecting this to be about the same.
You want cromulence at the end of the day don't you
@@andrewburridge5958 I expect nothing short of cromulence for the price they're asking
I don’t know if it’s your amp settings or what but it doesn’t sound good
It's for the owners of FMIC.
Aren't all of their products?
If this was a squier it would be $299
i dont think this line will be around much longer if they cant lower the price by $100 or maybe include a soft case or something. as they sit right now, and they have to do compete with PRS se, or any other Chinese guitars that are selling a lot better quality of guitar for 600 dollars
It’s a beautiful guitar and your playing is excellent.
I can’t hear the difference between those pickups and every other Telecaster I’ve played. It sounds like a Telecaster to me! So it’s not going to make a difference for a couch guitarist like myself.
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed the video.
Excellent playing. Great sounding , but in the end, just another Indo guitar with a "Genuine Fender headstock logo".
I thought Landon's video was very balanced.
I think it sounds and looks fine but it may be too much money for what your getting . If the tarriffs go through that may be the only one I can afford. It seems like this may be a more lateral move from a CV squier tele😊
I think it's still an important step up. I've played way more expensive Fenders with way worse fret work.
Take care.
$65? With parts and labor? That's just ridiculous to say.
@ I have a buddy that works for one of the big guitar companies over seas. Trust me you really don’t want to know. But a big part of it is the sheer volume of guitars coming from these factories. It’s a serious rabbit hole, but yeah they are totally produced sub $100 dollars.
Customer pays for a lot
Raw materials
Production
Packaging
Shipping and duties overseas
Shipping and duties in country
Dealer markup
Fenders profit
Taxes on all over head costs
It’s crazy 🤪
RUclips infomercial makers are now facing some backlash from the guitar general public about these guitars for the simple reason that they are a poor value and have underwhelming at best features for the price
RUclips influencers/infomercial makers are now going to have to face the reality that the bulk of their audience is in the situation of prices on everything continue to go up yet wages have remained stagnant or have gone down- this isnt something that can be ignored anymore
Everyone knows for $600 USD you can get an excellent used Fender with better features that is better made, or you can get a new guitar from many makers that has dramatically better features and is made better
In Canada these Standards are $839 which is *absurd*-$964 all in
Paying $964 CAD for this is a complete and total waste of money and you’d feel like a fool
What backlash am I facing?
@ I don’t know if you *personally* are, but people on various guitar forums etc are pointing out the revealing and obvious difference in opinion from many in the public who view the Standard as a cynical corporate move by Fender- a cheaply made guitar with zero exciting features for $600 USD and the RUclips infomercial channels who simply don’t point this reality out as a strong negative
It is becoming increasingly more difficult for the public to ‘trust’ (lol) guitar RUclips channels when they gloss over what the public sees as a significant con to the guitar- overpriced and underwhelming guitar with the fender logo.
It is a very bad value”
We see this divide between the public and RUclipsrs with numerous models- the Jaguar models with eliminated features (so ‘modern’! lol), Epiphones models raising prices etc etc
Gear makes broke.
she's playing guitar but making bass faces
I just don't see $350 more value than the Squier Affinity I just bought.
If your Affinity does it for you, that's great!
Why not address that issue instead of brushing it aside so glibly?
@ What issue?
@@christopheraaron8299 the $350 price gap and what you actually get for the extra money.
Cash grab from Fender, just buy a Squier instead
Sane review!
Used player series for less $$ 😂
Sure, that's an option. How is the neck on those?
If I see “Includes Paid Promotion”, I’m out.
OK
Im just not in the market for a Fender Affinity.
It's totally fine to not be in the market for something.
That's a good point
wow that sounded terrible you played fine even very good but that tele is suffering..
Lol thank you for specifying it's not my playing you didn't like
There's stupid and there's buying a F Standard stupid
these are aimed at those that want Fender on the headstock but have a Squire budget. And they are stupid enough to pay double for Fender to just put a Fender decal on a Squire.
You can disagree with wanting something and not call people stupid for wanting it
shill...
Thanks for watching!
You should check out Schecter's take on a Telecaster type guitar.
I'd love that tbh
@GetOffset I don't have one (yet), but the C-1 I do have impressed me with its quality at the price I paid.
