I think the most haunting scene of the episode was the opening when Kendall was yelling at his ex-wife about how everything he’s done has been for his children that he clearly doesn’t care about. For better and worse he is becoming the spitting image of his father.
From Wikipedia: The Scorpion and the Frog is an animal fable which teaches that vicious people cannot resist hurting others even when it is not in their own interests. A scorpion wants to cross a river but cannot swim, so it asks a frog to carry it across. The frog hesitates, afraid that the scorpion might sting it, but the scorpion promises not to, pointing out that it would drown if it killed the frog in the middle of the river. The frog considers this argument sensible and agrees to transport the scorpion. Midway across the river, the scorpion stings the frog anyway, dooming them both. The dying frog asks the scorpion why it stung despite knowing the consequence, to which the scorpion replies: "I am sorry, but I couldn't resist the urge. It's in my nature."
It's really a perfect metaphor for Shiv and Tom. That all Tom has really ever wanted from Shiv is that she act and acknowledge them as being on the same team, and though she can do it for moments, she can't maintain it. She always has to put him in a position where he's beneath her, because deep down she just doesn't respect him as an equal.
Scorpions are also a symbol for self destructiveness as cornered scorpion will sting itself in the head as it would rather suicide than be killed. When it comes to literature: "The scorpion symbolizes the evil that is found in nature, which is seemingly arbitrary and unmotivated, in contrast to the evil that is found in mankind, which is generally the result of selfish desire and greed."
