Tell me about your biggest miscommunication??
Biggest communication failure, started project vocals and acoustic halfway through wants full band crazy production add ons and can't play to metronome, budget $200......
Jason clark ugh.... that’s a rough one!
I don't really have a problem with miscommunication but more with identifying what kind of style goes with what kind of vocal. It sounds stupid I know should be pretty obvious but in my head it sounds like one thing but then on the makes it sounds completely different
I think it was when I invited someone to share an insight into the RECORDING MAKING PROCESS lmao
Great Video ! I was just wondering when in the process would you consider re amping guitars if that's something that needed to be done ?
Wow. Makes me yearn even more for live performances.
Man..every step is so important .
I’d say the producer can really make or break the artists’ vision.
As a producer, I don’t think I could hand over the stems to let someone else mix it.
You should do a “studio sabotage “ video; where the stuff you thought turned into something else completely .
Nice video bruh!
Hey congrats 20k!!! great video as usual!
Awesome video. Learned so much about the recording process from beginning to end. Keep em coming Colt.
Man I appreciate all of your videos. Such great gems that we can use and immediately utilize. Appreciate it!
Such a good video, I don't think i have ever found someone explain this so clear and accurate. Thank you!
Another video! So excited!
This was actually extremely clear and concise. Definitely sharing this with my bandmates. Thanks a lot, Colt.
Brent Tauro Thanks for watching! Hope it helps!
Thanks for the video mate. Bloody great.
This a great step by step of the process of recording! This is extremely helpful! Thanks!
Holy Sh@#t! This is anther Five Star Video!! I feel like I've just completed a 2 week crash course on Producing, Recording, Engineering and Mastering a Hit Record! WTF?? WHO is this Guy??!!
Another great video Colt, so many Artists need to know all these steps!!! Great Job!!!
Really digging these videos, Colt! I've time-adjusted vocal phrases for a while. I didn't know it was called "pocketing" though... thanks for the lingo!
Love this! this info is spot on
good work, thanks for putting this together, was very interesting...
Well said Colt. Keep up the good work!
Lucid and concise.
Appreciate it, thanks! )
The last producer I worked with made the greatest dirty martinis I've ever tasted. Thanks for the content brother. GO YANKEES!
Hi Colt! I'm watching your videos most probably every day and it pumps me every time I watch those. So thank you so much for giving us your tips and tricks plus what to avoid also! I have one request for you, If you could make a video of how actually you doing your mastering, Mixing, and recording, Everybody gonna love it for sure! So It will be a real-life demonstration. Anyway, it's up to you man. Thank you!
Great video, and actually kind of shed some light what I actually prefer to do, which is produce and play. Keep up the good work!
big respect for you man after 10 years try to learn to mix home studio i learned lot how to improvve my mix thanks to your great technics good job plz make contest mixing
This was very good! Would be cool to see you do a mini series of your workflow
Hi Colt..Great overview of the process. I wish some of my clients would adhere to my requests in that regard. All to often, some clients regard their studio time as a place to experiment. WRONG!!! It's like the difference between "practice" and "rehearsal". There is a big difference. Practice is what you do at home on your time. When in the studio, one should have a clear goal, then work to achieve that goal. It is not a time to figure out what the instrumentation will be. Thanks Colt. Graet video as usual!!
Bruce Dickert Thanks for the kind words! I do think there is a specific situation in which it is fine to experiment, or write music in the studio. That situation is when the client has an unlimited budget LOL, which almost never happens. I try to communicate that upfront during negotiation, or in the pre-production process, that unless they have an unlimited budget we need to get right to the point and make this efficient. Hope it helps!
Crystal clear communication! Now that’s an important element I think not enough producers know how to achieve
Love you stuff dude!
Telling people I can fix it in post and they think I can fix everything in post
Thanks so much!
Great video! Looking forward to more content! :)
Matt Malec thanks for watching!
Thanks a lot buddy 👍🏻
So so helpful thank you!! You need more subs
Thanks for this one!
Clayton Murray thanks for watching!
Awsome watch and to point
Awesome well done! As rookie, I had no idea how the process worked, now I have an idea. Thank you!
What is the chance you can do a video of how to record a very simple song, with guitar, bass drums keyboard or vocals, or even just instrumental. Nothing fancy, just a short simple 1 minute long song that shows how we record the stems, and apply them to the mix down and then to a finished product. Im still confused on how all the tracks come together, and how they all stay in key or the same tempo when they are all done separately. Thanks
THANK YOU
Cool video, making things very clear, thank you ! But please i really need to know what is the name of the song used in the outro, the last ten seconds of this video. Love that song so please let us know... Thank you !! 👍♥️
At about 6:57, I'm with you. I'm not a big fan of doing too much editing with the vocals. There's that fine balance between smooth vocal tracks but also having that organic vibe that makes the vocal come to life. If it's overdone, it sounds too robotic and staged. Of course, as you said, it depends on the genre.
...Agreed... but it seems the "authenticity" too often has become "artificial" with all the digital corrections made anymore... I miss "Real Music"....
@@kjc9trader491 This is one of many reasons I refuse to use things like auto-tune. Fans deserve better
gonna save this video for when i have enough money to buy all those things jajjajaja
I was just thinking you should make a video like this
Very well done video. I've been wanting to do a video like this for my clients but haven't had the time. I can't do it any better so I shared it on my studio Facebook page (Applachian Recording Studio)
Your video quality is getting better and better.
Thank you!!
@@ColtCapperrune hey, can you make a video on how you use your hardware to your DAW, do you process one track at a time then freeze/print it or what?
Oswald PH I’ve had quite a few people request a video like that, so it probably will happen soon
@@ColtCapperrune finally!
Thanks man!
I'd love to see how you pocket vocals :)
I have to admit... I was wondering how in the hell you were going to discuss a complete recording project - from start to finish - in 13 minutes!! Not bad though... A decent - basic - synopsis of the entire recording process... I figured this would have to be a 9 or 10 part series!... which would be cool actually - if you could spend the time on each part of the process - one per video - of perhaps something original of your own devices (no copyright worries) - and show in depth your actual process of putting a song/tune/piece together ... from start to finish ... Now THAT would be something!!!
Spot on Thanks
I shared with my producer. Can never find the word to deribewhat I want as I'm justthe singer/songwriter. I always am saying something doesn't sound right but cant describe it.....I have to have him listen and pointit out that some many seconds there's s buzz or hiss....but in technical terms I don't know the difference between presence or other things......drives us both nuts. I hope this helps us and Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
Hey Colt!
On average, how long would you say it takes to get through the production of a song? From start to finish
I never considered doing additional arranging or programming and sequencing as *Post Production.* Technically you are still in the *Production* stage when adding to the song as I do a lot of that as well as I don't necessarily make beats all the time. Veteran Record Producer *Ron Fair* the closest thing to *Quincy Jones* is pretty well known for that of what he calls a *Composite Style* of production when he would collaborate with other Producers or take a song demo and enhance the production and vocal arrangement of the song. Sort of polish it up to get it to its highest level. That's what he did for the song *Mary J. Blige - Be Without You* as the original version of the that song was rejected by the label after it was turned in. After Ron Fair analyzed the song and gave his musical break of what was wrong with the song and what failed it's realization he took over the recording project and had Mary re sing the chours as she was doing a three part but they were the wrong notes that weren't corresponding to the piano that's playing on the demo. Ron also created a new intro and bridge for the song and wrote the additional string arrangment and hired 32 piece string orchestra.
Great overview of the record making process. Would you have, or recommend a source where all of what you just said is written down for easy reference? And/or an link index to each section of your explanation would also be helpful. I know it is only a 13 minute video...but it may help save time from fishing around for the section of interest.
Thanks for all the great info! Do you have any paid courses / longer form training for mixing, editing, etc?
Chris Jansson as of right now I do not, however I have considered starting a Patreon. If I ever decide to move forward it will definitely be announced here, thanks!
I feel like shaker is everywhere :)
Does it ever happen that the mix process reveals that maybe something needs to be added? I can totally see why you would want the stages to be very clean and well defined but does the process of blending reveal things that might be missing? I should add I am a total novice at all this. Great post BTW
👏👏👏
If you are doing all separate tracks with all players separate, does a drummer play the whole song with fills and such to just a click track? That seems so hard to do. I play drums but don’t read. I can’t imagine trying to do fills and feel with just a click.
I love your enthusiasm. You are a very engaging communicator and I always enjoy watching your content.
Madge Deepers really appreciate that!
the real question is. what camera do you use? i feel like its an EOS R. i really appreciate your work man!
Elvis Herrera it’s a Sony a6400 with a Sigma 16mm f1.4. EOS R would be sweet though!
What desk is in the middle of your room? I’m trying to build my new studio and like the way you have it setup with the racks on the sides and the monitors behind everything. Thanks.
Mark Chiasson It’s just a table set between a pair of racks. If you go to the end of my studio build video you can see me push the gear in one piece at a time and how it goes together. Hope that helps!
Colt Capperrune cheers!
Did he talked about recording making ?
if you master your own mix do you any amount of time between the processes. i find myself expecting things comings if i try to revise to soon to my last sessions and if i do that i think i subconsciously dont mind them so much.
brian village I try to allow at least a day in between the processes

Colt...I sent you a message about a month ago, via your website, and have not heard anything back from you. Just checking to make sure that it went through.
