- After many months of nothing new to watch, soon Star Trek fans will have the opportunity to witness the final season of one of the most devise series in its history, that being Star Trek Discovery. But given the recent information that has been released about the shows fifth season, I think there is a very good chance that much like the third season of Star Trek Picard, many fans will return for the final trek of the USS Discovery. Hi everyone and welcome to What Did I Miss, my name is Eric, thank you very much for joining me today. Where I will be going over all of the information that has been released so far about the upcoming fifth season of Star Trek Discovery, including when it will air, what the episode titles are and also take a look at the promotional materials, which I think drop a huge hint about what is going to happen this season. Personally, I'd really like William Shatner to make a cameo appearance in the role he made famous.
Shatner as Kirk one last time is something i want more than anything when it comes to Trek.. That said, i kinda think Shatner and some of the old crew made some enemies at the studio over the years and i doubt we will get to see it..
I don't want to see Kirk in this future timeline STD went to. Kirks place was in his time. Ripping him out of it with the Nexus worked because he died getting into fisticuffs but imagine a new Kirk... Someone who is the Kirk of old but brings nothing of what he was to the future where he's reborn as a new Kirk we don't know...
They may as well create a new character and call him a hero of the Federation. It's the worst form of marketing imaginable made all the more worse by a studio that hates Classic Trek and will reinvent the myth... For a few short episodes, never to be seen or heard from again.
STD refuses to stand on it's merits, it can only throw member berries at the audience. They lost this battle before it started. The only one they have left is, will they allow Kirk to be Kirk, or will they Jon Kent him.
Shatner is in his nineties. Several are dead. It'd have to be CGI.

Well, that 800 year old Romulan ship could have the remains of Capt. Kirk. It was Shatner's book, The Return, that told of the resurrection of Kirk by Romulans, albeit, they took him from Veridian III.

There are two dead Jim Kirk. One is from the alternate timeline from Strange New Worlds from a gunshot wound, the other is from the original timeline who died in Star Trek Generations. This means that both could potentially be revived possibly leading to a Kirk versus Kirk matchup.
Im not a huge fan of Discovery but I don’t think it’s awful. If they brought in Shatner as Kirk for the final season, I’d think it would be a terrific decision to give his character a proper send off. He would also be a great dramatic foil for many of their characters.
I liked his send off in the STNG movie.
Possible idea but I truly doubt that Mr. Shatner would wish to return. Time sadly isn't on the side of anyone even the original Captain James T Kirk.

sun has a gravitational field, earth has a gravitational field. if something is closer to the sun, it will fall towards the sun. if it is closer to the earth, it falls to the earth.
there is a point where the 2 just cancel out and the object stays put.
L2 and L3 are more complicated, L4 and L5 are equal to each other and even more complicated (but they are stable), but stuff there stays put.

A nice idea, but the way they make every effort to minimize or remove Kirk from all images, and continually contradict what Star Trek was before 2009, they don't deserve such an honor. While I would love to see Bill as Kirk once more, I hope he turns them down. (If that's their idea)

Since Discovery is not in the same timeline as TOS, TNG, DS9, VOY and ENT, it really doesn't matter what they do with Kirk in this one.

Legrange points are spots in space where the gravity of multiple celestial bodies (the earth, moon, sun, and other planets, ect.) effectively cancles eachother out. Kind of like a balance point between the earth, moon, and sun. Putting a spacecraft at one of these points allows it to remain in a stable location with very minimal effort/energy

As much as I would love to have it happen because he IS my favorite character from the franchise, I doubt William Shatner is returning. This is something that I believe would be hyped up like the turn of the TNG cast in the 3rd season of Picard. I'm not saying that it's not a possibility, even a very strong one, just that I doubt it because of how colossal it would be and there is not even a hint of it. That being said.... I'm praying for this to happen. Burnham meeting Kirk and them having a moment where they both talk about Spock would be freaking monumental.
Shatner would be fantastic if he returned. He might ask for too much money though. But you never know. He might just do it because being Kirk in 1966 was really the major boost of his career at that time. Maybe he will feel Star Trek put him on the map, so to speak so he might as well do this to be the last thing "Kirk" does. If he does it, it will be the most watched Star Trek episode ever! 90 plus and counting... However, if he does not want to do it, maybe get the guy who played Kirk on STAR TREK CONTINUES!! And if you never heard of that show. WATCH ALL 11 of the episodes! You WON'T be dissapointed!!
To use the Kirk character they of course could make use of all the present AI technology to present us a James of any age.
The characters that make sense coming back are Sisko and Wesley as they are not bound by linear time.
The former is pretty popular still, but neither are as likely.

I have watched all of Discovery. While far from a favourite, I haven't minded it.
But Shatner returning as Kirk in the last season will be up there with the TNG crew all being together in Picard S3

Don't know if your Kirk theory is correct, but I would absolutely love to see William Shatner as Kirk one last time.
They will open the puzzle-box and find the Akoocheemoya.
For William Shatner to return based on his last performance on Generations, then I can see when they did 3-D scans of him a while back, him at the age he was in Generations. However that basically would be a clone of him. Then again his character as he puts it has to have a meaning for coming back not just a cameo. Should be interesting to see if Shatner gets a say in it. Fingers crossed!

Bring in an unknown actor, then digitally put Shatners mug on him but make him mirror universe Kirk, so why not.

The big problems with theses series are, that the ships even if they have been built long before the original Enterprise, look so much more modern than the original Enterprise .
I think bringing back William Shatner to play Kirk one last time is a great send off for the character. I always felt the way the killed Kirk off in Generations was unfitting for such an iconic character and for the actor who had played him for so many years. I would have been more satisfied if Kirk had lived and decided to return back to the Nexus, sort of how Pike went on to live the rest of his life on Talos. Kirk is known to have always cheated death, and that he doesn't believe in the "No Win Scenario," for him to die on screen the way he did just didn't seem right. The character of Spock passed due to natural causes, the same as the actor who played him (Leonard Nimoy), which to me was more fitting for the character to basically dies of old age.

The hidden artifact in the Romulan vessel is Kirk's body in suspended animation in the 800 year old Romulan ship, which is a continuation of the book on Kirk called The Return. Ratings on Discovery would triple is they brought in Shatner for 1 or 2 episodes! So why not! Make it so.
They look more like runes than hieroglyphics to me, but I like your Kirk idea. They put that corpse in Picard for a reason, maybe this is it. Given your speculation that "Mirrors" is a mirror-universe episode it's possible Paul Wesley appears as a mirror-Kirk. The remains of Kirk could spawn a revived and aged Kirk played by Shatner.
I do not think so. Remember that in PIC S2 there was a wormhole created and they hinted it would be an issue for S3.
When S3 dropped, they didn't even mentioned this. Hell, they didn't even mentioned the whole Juratti Borg Queen debacle.
It must be something new. They might drop some cameos here na there but I highly believe this is not connected with the Kirk cameo in PIC S3.
It would great to see Paul Wesley as a mirror Kirk and Shatner as an aged Kirk. That would be big ratings and fans would tune in.
I have seen Tig Notaro's name listed for season five, but as a guest star. In the past seasons, she was listed as a recurring star.

It was a good series and made its mark in history in a good way for a lot of first. And it also gained more attention back to the franchise as far as prime television which made it better for Strange New Worlds and Picard.. And added a beautiful ship to Star Trek catalog.
It's funny how everybody shytes on Burnham's discovery, but its popularity made the spin-offs possible. Kinda like Snipes' Blade became less about him but more about surrounding characters.

2390 (800 years before Discovery Season 5) would be in middle of Picard's period of retirement at his family's winery in France. Perhaps he went on one of his many archeological trips during that time?

William Shatner returning and discussing ties with Burnham about Spock especially since she pulled up his image and realized all he was able to accomplish after she left. after she went to the 32 century.. would be a good way to salvage the series and send it off on a respectable fan service note...
I'm looking forward to this season - it looks like fun and I am disappointed it will be the last season. I think the mystery will involve the TNG episode The Chase where Picard finished the hunt for the origins of humanoids. The Romulan commander sent a friendly message at the end of the episode. Maybe that's the Romulan ship Discovery is looking for.
I do not want to see William Shatner - I hope they don't involve Kirk at all.
1:58 The year 3188 to 3191 minus 800 + or - 10 years. 2378 to 2401. This covers a lot. "Red Directive" could deal with Red Matter, or that ubiquitous Red AI (HAL, The Matrix, Terminator, Control from Discovery, other dimension AI from Picard Season 1, Living Construct from Prodigy), the Borg (2391). "Lagrange Point" could be related to the octonary star system from Picard.
It would be interesting to see if they put Kirk in this season. With Picard season 3 leaving it open. You never know. But excited to see what or who they bring into this.

Mirror Lorca supposedly died in the mirror universe battling Burnham season 1, however where is the original prime Lorca (maybe trapped in the mirror universe) and they could rescue him. That would be awesome.
i predict that in the final episode the last 5 minutes they get to go home. maybe that cube is the key to them getting home.

Unless another series occurs around the same point in the timeline where Discovery is at (in season 5), canceling the series is effectively closing off that future from being used in Trek again minus the occasional cameo.

Lagrange points are gravitationally stable points where objects are pulled equally between two objects. For instance, there is one between the earth and moon and another between the earth and sun. But there is also one on the opposite side if the moon from the earth, and one on the opposite of the earth from the sun. And then there is one preceding and succeeding the orbits of the moon around the earth and the earth around the sun. But I'm not sure how they'd use it in a start trek story, because the powerful drives they have leave Lagrange points redundant; simple orbits would do. But they are convenient places to put space colonies.
Final return of Shatner's Kirk would be a redemption for Discovery.

It's quite possible these days that they could CGI-recreate a young William Shatner like what they have done with ABBA for the Voyage concerts. There are quite a few doing that on RUclips. They did the same with Peter Cushing recreated by Guy Henry playing Grand Moff Tarkin in Rogue One.
Also with Harrison Ford in The Dial of Destiny.

It would be nice to see William Shatner as James Kirk just one more time. His body could be retreived from the facility from Picard Season 3. Don't recast Kirk as another actor if they use that plotline from Picard. (or Kirk could return from the Nexus as yet another timeline version of Kirk).

We really enjoy all modern Star Trek in my house and cannot wait for the final season of Discovery. We are rewatching the first 4 seasons right now. Thanks for the breakdowns and previews..

Yes, Pine. As much as I dislike the logic behind creating the Kelvin Timeline (as that causes nasty past temporal consequences which unwind the universe), Pine is still a better Kirk than Shatner. At least when Pine overacts, it is to parody Shatner. When Shatner overacts, that's just him breathing. Paul Wesley as Kirk isn't my favorite, but he definitely has more charm than Shatner and plays genius (tactical or otherwise) better than either Pine or Shatner.

The Star Trek showrunners already missed the Shatner boat on SNW, when they chose _not_ to have William Shatner's Kirk go back in time (in the red tunic uniform) to convince Pike that he must face his destiny. It's doubtful they'd be that clever this time.

What good is having any episode titles if it is never burned into the first few seconds of Act 1? This is one reason I hate Discovery. I have LOVED Star Trek since 1966, but Discovery is something I've watched only a few episodes of. Which episodes were they? I can't tell. THEY DIDN'T SHOW US THE TITLE IN THE FILM! A STUPID oversight. And if intentional, then criminal.
What if they have found someone young enough, and looks like the young William Shatner? Back sometime ago before the Star Trek Original Series reboot started, this idea was toyed with. A nation wide search was put into action and I never heard the how come. Of course, we all know, Chris Pine got the part. I have not been able to find anything to confirm this, do you know anything about this?

You're thinking too narrowly about Kirk, if we're going to entertain this guess. Given how his DNA is being preserved, and Soong's demonstrated ability to port a human's consciousness into a synthetic body, the producers could AI in Shatner's Kirk from TOS or from Generations, with Shatner voicing the character, and a good impersonator of the same height and build donning the green outfit with the reference dots to interact with other characters and do business on the set.
They lost me with Discovery when they cast Stacey Abrams as President of United Earth.
