About a year or so ago, I went to see him perform at Cafe Oto in London where he pretty much just told stories with the band riffing along in the background. At a certain point he started looking at his watch every now and again, then announced he had to leave to catch a flight to Berlin. Cafe Oto for those not familiar is a former shop with large glass windows facing directly onto the street. He'd spotted the cab that had pulled up and simply stopped, politely said good night, walked thorugh the crowd and straight into the taxi. The band carried on playing as he left the street. True style.
Been searching quite a lot on Pere Ubu lately. A funny thing that came up was that some guy, maybe a music rewiever, was describing David Thomas' singing sounding like "Jimmy Stewart trapped in an oboe"😅
I just read that and loved it. It was followed by the quote "Mr Thomas's voice is that of a man muttering in a crowd. You think he's talking to himself until you realize he's talking to you."
Man, it looks like this singer just loves that he's in a band. He's so excited, and keeps pointing at the guitarist like "WHOA! I'm in a band!" He's awesome!
They'd actually been around forever by that point, but they had always had an image as a bunch of art-school weirdos who never had more than a tiny audience for their out-there experiments. Then, after 14 years, someone had the idea of them making a pop (for them) record, with hooks and melodies and harmonies and stuff, and they belatedly realized how much that fun that could be.
"Final Solution" is a masterpiece. I saw them around 76 at a club in Chicago. They had this vibe that impressed me. Like they knew something that no one else did.
That would be what it looks like when a brilliant vocalist gets absolutely INTO music. I am a singer myself and greatly admire David Thomas and his completely pure and expressive manner of performance. People should take notes from this guy.

One of my favorite bands of all time, and this is my favorite song by them. I wish someone would do a documentary about them, starting with their earlier days as Rocket From the Tombs. David Thomas is brilliant, and for a long time he had a surprisingly good singing voice. Happy to see this video.

I got to see them live at The Edge in Toronto in 1979, at point blank range. Dave Thomas is probably one of the most intense performers I've ever seen. Right up there with Howard Devoto of Magazine, who I also saw at The Edge around the same time. Brilliant stuff!
When I was in high school I listened to this cassette every day on my way to work. I think I still get flashbacks of driving on the interstate from hearing this. I never seen them perform though. Interesting presence.
I remember watching this, and to be honest it was so odd, between Dave's mannerisms and his voice and singing I didn't know what to make of it. But it laid at the time a small kernel that has only grown over time. His singing is so goddamn earnest here it can tear your heart out. For those who have been there, we want to take that walk in the hope that love may bloom again, and all the while knowing its fleeting away. I know my way round town. Used to live around here. Hi Larry! Imagine seeing you here. I discovered this awesome song/band back in 1990 when I was at art college and would take out a handful of albums often on weekends at my local library to listen too. The original studio version is beautiful and there is an official video of it.

So, they were scheduled to be on a TV show and play to a mass audience -- when they were anything but a mass audience act -- and they take this conventional rock sound, subvert it and make it their own. For people who know/knew the band, it's a kick to see them in this mode. Dave, in particular, adds a generous helping of performance art.
I've heard this show recording many times, and am always amazed at how much they sound like the record. Not many bands get it this close, except on American Bandstand....
One of my absolute favourite bands! Could this have been one of the first gigs after Chris Cutler left on drums? The two drummer outfit was very cool, with the obvious different drumming styles that really fit together as two guitar players would.
Definitely. Listen to some of their earliest songs like Heart of Darkness and Final Solution. You wouldn't believe anybody could sound like that as early as 1975.
that was amazing. the pixies, fugazi, modest mouse, tv on the radio, so many bands owe a huge debt to this band.

Found this from a D.E.V.O playlist. I'm going to seek out more Pere Ubu. So good.
I love this band. He proves that all of us can be in a rock band.
"love" that crazy man and his music
Invention of music in America. What artistry in David Thomas!
David Thomas is one of the purest performers ever. They're playing in Cleveland March 5. Don't miss seeing them in person.
This is the first (and probably only) youtube video that i have written a comment for but Dave Thomas is a genius frontman and Pere Ubu make alfred jarry proud
I've always loved him so much !
This vid got me into Pere Ubu and this led me down the rabbit hole to these guys and i finally figured out the cool little solo the guy does and i couldn't be happier today.
Thanks for posting this. Nightmusic was the best music show ever. A huge spectrum of artists. Not playing hits for the most part. It is sorely missed.
What a great fucking sound. Pere always gets me pumped.
Ozzy R yeah. their power pop songs are great just like their punk stuff. definitely an influential band . pixies etc.
i love pere ubu
Soo you like shitty music then I suppose
you're a little drastic,do not you think? lol
sabrunobia well honestly how is this good music?
thevillelova93
No. Can't you read? They said "I love Pere Ubu". Now if they had said something like "I love Christian rock" you would have had a point!
i love pussy :-)
David Thomas is a genius!!! Brilliant!
Pere Ubu: The most passionate individual group, with the greatest anti-mainstream fusion of of expressive epileptic soul that I have EVER embraced.

😄
Seeing them on the 30th at the Rickshaw. Hope they play this one and Waiting For Mary.
Waiting for Mary🎶🙄👍🏻💞
Wow, this is crazy, inspiring the way he herks-n-jerks on stage..
Ripping off Ian Curtis.
herkyjerky
Sickle TTT : David was performing earlier than Ian and already had those moves. David was in Rocket from the Tombs ‘74-75.
@@inthegoldenrodhours333 Bro David has been in the game since 1975
Wonderful. Wonderful. Thank you.
There about 2000 bands that signed to labels after 1985, that should be required to send Dave Thomas a check.....a big one.

Dog day afternoon by the sea.
I think about you.
What am I gonna do?
Sorrow's hangin over me.
Let me walk with you cuz it's breaking my heart.
The things that we had,
the good and the bad - now it's parking lots.
Don't let's talk about tomorrow -
Baby, standin at the edge of sorrow.
Let's watch the whole world goin slow.
Let's watch the whole world goin.
I know my way round town.
Used to live around here.
I know the sites to see,
the things they mean to me,
and how we tore it down.
Let me walk with you cuz it's breaking my heart.
The things that we had,
the good and the bad - now it's parking lots.
Don't let's talk about tomorrow -
Baby, standin at the edge of sorrow.
Let's watch the whole world just goin slow.
Let's watch the whole world goin slow.
It was a dream.
Nah, but it was a tin can.
Not a dream - man, it was a tin can.
Ha!
Had I not kicked that...
Had I not kicked that...
Had it clattered in the gutter when it bounced down the sidewalk...
Had I not...
Keep that.
Don't let's talk about tomorrow -
Baby, standin at the edge of sorrow.
Let's watch the whole world goin slow.
Let's watch the whole world goin so.
Let's watch the whole world goin.
good words like it
Thank you!!
Beautiful in every way.
I'm here. This is wholehearted.
oh man . This song is breakin my heart
So, they were scheduled to be on a TV show and play to a mass audience -- when they were anything but a mass audience act -- and they take this conventional rock sound, subvert it and make it their own. For people who know/knew the band, it's a kick to see them in this mode. Dave, in particular, adds a generous helping of performance art.
now i know why i even like the more conventional sounding pere ubu... i hadn't ever put it into words...
Pure Genius.
One of the best band ever!
Definitely. Listen to some of their earliest songs like Heart of Darkness and Final Solution. You wouldn't believe anybody could sound like that as early as 1975.
dang i love this video
Awesome. Love the whole thing - '...that dream man, it was a tin can, *nyatt*...'
I can't belive i've never listen to this before, this is awesome
Damn, time goes...
I' ve seen the ba.d in the early eighties in Krefeld/germany.
They were so lucky. Full of humour. Great!
This is so good they've just got it off here! Wow!
He's fucking insane! Where does this type passion even come from?

Low intensity mental issues.
Logan Coykendall Experiences, self realisation, self acceptance, self permission, self expression, art, performance, it comes from many places. It's great. Enjoy it!
He really feels the music in his body.
love David Thomas!
I've never heard about this group but the singer is quite a character. Enjoyable clip.
Mi banda favorita por siempre 🇨🇴
D ley mamey...
I love this guy: he grew on me, it didn't take long and so many years later I still like him the band & every thing he does, hmm?
He sings like your hyper drunk friend on Cherokee night that is low key a good singer
Also a little bit of Chris Farley as well IMO
