  • Hainan Chicken Rice, or Hainan Ji Fan is arguably the most iconic dish of Singapore. The Forkers trace its roots back to the people who brought it to the region and then spend an afternoon with their descendants diving deep into the culture and history.

我爱吃海南鸡饭。Have had it in Singapore and the Khao Man Gai (Thai version) in Thailand. Simple but such a flavorful dish. Would love to eat it in Hai Nan province in the future. Yummy, what a spread. Lucky guys.

THEIR CHILLI THEORY is NOT true. Chilies have been grown in the remotest parts of Northeast India and Thailand for THOUSANDS of years. Not even the shadow of European / American people fell there until the early 19th century. Just because some european came to India and brought south american chilies with him 500 years ago to Kerala does not mean that the Nagas and Assam tribes were not eating chilies a thousand years ago. “The experts” say that the chili is of the same nightshade family (Solanaceae) as the potato, tomato and eggplant/brinjal but brinjal is known to have its origin in India and was called “vatinganah” in Sanskrit.
