  • Hi Dancers!
I get asked about what shoes to buy when you start ballet as an adult so I thought it would be a good idea to share some of my experiences with different types of ballet flats.
    Products mentioned:
    - Bloch Prolite II (www.bloch.com....)
    - MDM Intrinsic Profile 2.0 (mdmdance.com/p...)
    - MDM Elemental Reflex (mdmdance.com/p...)
    - Bloch Performa (www.bloch.com....)
    - Merlet Sybel (www.merletdanc...)
    - Merlet Solist (www.merletdanc...)
    - Blochsox (www.bloch.com....)
If you have any questions about any of the shoes I talked about, feel free to comment them or DM me on my social accounts listed below!
When we start ballet as an adult, our bodies are already formed from our experiences. As an adult ballet dancer myself, I understand what it is like to work with what you have in order to progress in ballet. This is why I’ve sought further education and am proudly Barre Body, Progressing Ballet Technique and Progressing Contemporary Technique certified. Unfortunately, adult ballet dancers don’t have the same opportunities as those who start as a child, so I’m here to change this and make ballet accessible for all!

Thank you so much for this video! I'm 38, just started ballet a few months ago, and have flat feet. I was starting to notice my feet were rolling in and messing up my alignment in normal ballet shoes. I learned from you in this video about MDM shoes, got a pair of the profile ones, and they're game changing.

I just went into our dance store and they just asked me what color I wanted and my size. And I tried one pair one and that was it. I have Grishko ones with a split sole in pink made out of canvas (I think they are called Dream Stretch?). I seriously didn't know there were so many differences with flat shoes!
I mean, obviously every brand has their own, but I just thought they were all the same, just canvas/leather, different colors and either ribbons sewn on or not. This was really enlightening!

I'm so glad you found the information useful! I've personally never tried Grishkos, but they sound like a lovely light shoe! It is really interesting how there are so many types out there. I honestly was the same and only thought there was either canvas or leather when I started ballet!

For my first pair, the dance store girls picked a Capezios split sole shoes for me. They were fine, but the toe area was really bulky. I did some research and went with the So Danca SD 16. They make my feet look so much better! They hug my arch nicely , and I like that the elastics are pre sewn in and there is no draw string.

Thank you so much for sharing! I think many people don't realise that there are really a lot of options out there for ballet flats and they're not just limited to the first pair they're fitted in! I am happy that you've found shoes that you love!

Thanks for this, I wish I had seen it when I started ballet a few months ago! It was all very overwhelming and I just went with whatever the store lady picked.

I use to dance when very young but want to get back into dance. I have always loved split sole because I think my point looks better.

You could not PAY me to dance in canvas - I grew up dancing in leather and when I tried on a canvas shoe as an adult I just went 'no. no, this is wrong. absolutely not.' I'm in the Bloch Prolite 2 Hybrids now and love them to bits - Bloch just seems to be 'my' brand, at least for ballet flats, as that's what I grew up dancing in and that's the company I seem to keep coming back to.

How would you choose your width size if you can’t go in store and get them?

    • @AdultBalletCollective

I’ve been fitted in all these shoes in store before so I know my width! ☺️ I would send an email to a professional pointe shoe fitter and try to get a virtual fitting if you can’t go in store!
