i specifically wanted to see how the haidate tied on. thanks for filming in a dark cave with black armor and having your assistant stand right in the front.
Dear Antony, I have been following your research since you began as well as the narrative that has occurred as a result, with a great fondness I might add, being interested in both the history itself and watching the process of you blazing this frontier (as is always exciting when humans discover some refinement of their knowledge whether it be historical, scientific, or something else). I write to you now however not to simply thank you and show my appreciation for your work (although I admit with no small amount of guilt that I have yet to purchase even one of your books; I’ll have to remedy that at some point) but also to share with you an experience I had which was directly affected by your research as well as an idea which the experience sparked. The experience, I happen to find myself in a situation right now where I’ve run out of things to watch/read/research/listen to/etc. and then I remembered this ninja movie I had bought years ago at a Japanese import store and decided to watch it (American culture tends to oversaturate). Immediately I start recognizing everything wrong with what’s going on in the movie (not that it was trying to be historically accurate or anything, but those details aside); the costumes are wrong, the weapons are wrong, the organizational structure is wrong, the tactics are wrong, the list goes on… and I wasn’t even five minutes into this movie. So I’m sitting there, I pause it, and I just lament that as of this moment I seem to have completely run out of things to enjoy. And I thought, damnit Antony!, the last thing in existence I might still find some novelty and enjoyment in and here you’ve gone and ruined it! Of course this isn’t entirely true but in terms of fiction (as you’ve said and as has been proven many times) you’ve pretty much killed the mythical ninja we’ve all come to appropriate (with love) into the public domain of imagination along with Alice and King Arthur (this is not to say the only thing I enjoyed was ninjas but rather that ninjas were the last remaining thing I had forgotten I was entirely jaded with). So I continued thinking and as I was doing this an idea came to mind… The idea, Wouldn’t it be wonderful if Antony decided to do one or both of the following two things?: 1) Author/compile a supplemental canon of teachings that any samurai school can add-in as a special ‘shinobi’ class/rank (regardless of school - and this is not to say that everyone would be learning ‘Antony Ryu’ but it would mean that everyone who did this would be learning the ‘Antony-compiled core set of skills/teachings that every ninja would need to know as per historical sources and his gathered research’) 2) Author a writing bible for Hollywood that describes for them (in an accessible way, i.e. with lots of pictures) a new set of historically accurate ninja tropes/staples so movies, TV shows, and cartoons can all start benefiting from this knowledge instead of continuing to produce bullcrap ninjas that wouldn’t last 10 minutes in medieval Japan and continue to rely on (at best) an insultingly bad interpretation of eastern philosophy and religions (at least when it comes to American media; maybe then I could watch a ninja movie I actually enjoyed instead of spending my viewing pointing out the plot holes and historical inaccuracies) -Many Thanks
Thank you for the message. I have read it all. It is nice to know you have been here a long time, but never reading a single book then asking me to write a book on a topic! hahahah. Very funny. I have a new book in process at the moment that covers number 1. Just waiting for a film director to contact about ninja :)
Thanks again, and yes I realize my hypocrisy… But awesome to hear you’re doing the first idea! Also, with the ninja writing bible, my point on this is more that Hollywood is pretty stupid unless smart people take a personal interest and offer their services (or do the work for them) so I imagine it will likely take you writing that book to actually get a director to contact you (although I hope I’m wrong because I want a historically accurate ninja movie a.s.a.p.) P.S. If I don't buy one of your other books before this I'll definitely purchase the samurai school supplement as soon as you can get it published
I want to do a full study of all the different things, seems different schools have different ideas, but there is so much to go through. I will be asking some Japanese this year in Japan
It was nice of him to step out into the direct lighting at the end so we could actually see the black armor against the black background.
I want to do it again but in a full studio next time with a white background.

Question: what's a Wakisaki?
