Also, i made this mistake over and over and just did this again recently to my inevitable disappointment. I no longer buy from Etsy jewelers who do not have an easy return option OR only accept PayPal. I received some rings and they were blatantly fake, costume jewelry, that did not match the description. No returns accepted. So i messaged the seller and said if i don’t get a full refund I’m going to report your store to Etsy as selling fake stuff. The response was at first angry and they denied it, however, conveniently they immediately updated the ad to remove all mentions of gold filled. I told them i have screenshots of the original ad and that NOW in addition to my original complaint, i was going to report them for trying to cover it up. WEIRD!!!! long story short i got a refund but it was in three separate refunds to my PayPal account even though it was one purchase and the reason was suuuuper weird. I’ll spare u the story but it had illegal written all over it. So i got my refund but still reported to try to protect other buyers. Bad sellers likely have multiple stores so shutting done one of them doesn’t matter much. Good luck out there.
Glad it was helpful! Now, there is a chance it may come out as false-negative if it is a fine chain and or there are some bumps in the texture. Meaning, even though it is gold filled, it may fail the test. This is because it is very fine and to get more trace metal on the stone, you end up rubbing very hard and the texture is not even. The most definitive would be an assay test in a lab.
So, I just 'happened' upon your video and want to thank you for sharing this information. I just started jewelry making a few months ago and still have a lot to learn but I can tell you that it is important to me, just as a hobbyist, to invest in quality products, even though I do not plan on selling anything I make (will be giving as gifts to my loved ones). I would be embarrassed if I gave a bracelet as a Christmas gift, only to find out later that it tarnished that person's wrist after a couple of months, so regardless, I think it matters to not only Wholesalers and/or Retailers, but as well to individuals, small business or hobbyists. I can tell you that after watching this, you can count on me purchasing a test kit. It's such a shame, really, that during a time where companies/corporations are making record profits (according to recent statistics) and claiming that their price increases are due to inflation, shipping delays, rising labor & material costs etc, that not have prices increased but so too has the amount of false or misleading representations, counterfeit, poor quality etc. Yes, I feel like we're in an era of fake products and I'm sure we've all realized over the past couple of years is sadly, greed too is also at an all-time high. Anyway, apologies for rambling on but please know I have respect for you sharing this information. Unless consumers start doing their due diligence, this market of greed will continue. For the person without brass allergy, it is a lifetime product for normal wear and tear. For anyone with a brass allergy (actually, it is more of a chemical reaction) it turns the metal darker.
