I hate to burst your bubble a little bit. In Our Lifetime you own nothing That little piece of land you're talking about. You rent it from the government. By paying taxes your whole life. The clothes that you buy that you wear on your back will fall to shreds. You will not own them. The food you buy you'll consume it and it will come out the other end. You don't own that. You can buy a car, but you have to register it and then share it and do other things to it repairs eventually that car will fall to shreds. So the only thing you truly own in this world is your word. Then also the logic and understanding of how Lifeworks around you you can own knowledge. As well even that overtime though can fade. We are giving the illusion that we own these things. We truly do not. We have to pay tax for everything. It's sad, but true. That's why to me. I tell people the most important thing you can kind of give me besides love is your attention span. And also give me a word. Because if you can't keep your word. Then you don't own anything really. Stay blessed. I'm only saying it because knowledge is power.

I was reading a book called Sovereignty (same book I’ve mentioned in a comment I’ve left under this comment thread) the author, Michler, briefly points out that modern man is constantly doing things and subsequently rarely takes the time to stop, slow down and reflect on what he is doing (both in the moment and on a more wider scale) and consider whether it is actually something which will help him or make him a more virtuous person. I find Mr. Bull-Hansen’s slow and measured pace to be a refreshing change

So many people are in debt - I tried to explain to my son that getting something on credit is a nice way of saying debt i.e. the truth is not that nice to hear. He sort of gets it, but the lure of goodies (in this case a powerful gaming computer) was too much to resist. My dear departed father never took one penny of debt in his life. Both my parents were Engineers & Artist's, they taught me how to design, build, use & care for tool's. The concept of ownership is a deeper philosophical concept than just possession of course. A tool that's well made, cared for should outlast the original posser, its a reflection of the integrity of all you & I have mentioned in so many ways but do we really own anything? We posses thing's until we die, even our body's go back into the elimental state. One's beliefs, moral, ethics, integrity and yes, body's are tools to live our lives so i would say we posses during a life tools metaphorically speaking that we use to live. Can one have too many tool's?
I enjoy your sharing the tools you posses and find it wonderful when you're sharing a tool can create another's ownership multiplying it's abilities to be used through a sharing of its possessor.

I think your cup is a good example of why ownership is important. It's important to you as you created it, investing time to bring it into existence. If it's stolen someone has taken your creative energy as well as your time. Both are valuable resources. High quality items such as your knives you have taken time to chose. Choices that reflected your ego and also again time. In terms of looking after it, maintaining and cherishing things. I like the distinction you made between materialism and property. I will remember that arguement. Big fan from the UK. Keep up the good work.

The stoic line of thought is that, sure you can have things and money; property, as you put it - just don't imagine that you're any worse or better off if (when) you lose it. It isn't you, and you can always get it - or something like it - back.
More to your point though, agency is very important, and we should never surrender our agency to anyone else. It's very difficult to get that back.

Great topic. I also think about this often. I think the importance of property also comes from our basic need for personal space and privacy. It's also a fundamental part of freedom. We need our private familiar space in which we arrange things by our own desire. If we suppress too much this basic need we get stressed, depressed, or even mentally ill.

I agree; the phrase "pride of ownership" arises from integrity in how you take care of things. A person who takes care of their things also takes care of themselves, of their family, friends, community and country. A slob is a slob through and through on all dimensions. And notice how the amount of melanin in one's body has no bearing on one's integrity. People should be judged solely on their character.

For once I’m having chocolate coffee while I’m watching, Skål! On the topic of stuff, big difference between not owning and sharing things. Some people see other cultures where some things are shared amongst people and mistake it for some kind of political ism. For example it’s not necessary in urban areas for everyone to own a lawn mower, so one could be shared in a neighborhood. I think it’s just being mindful of your money and how many potentially unnecessary things you own. You could drive a small car and if you need a truck for something occasionally rent one for a day instead of going out and buying one that will almost never get used. I’m digging the knives too, need to get a few more Moras, I only own the Companion currently.

Or just own a truck instead of owning a car, it’s more useful.

Nice to hear someone talking that is not raving about something. I think we share a common feeling about the future and the way things are today. I feel as if I am sitting in front of you and we are talking along the same lines and share a lot of the same thoughts. We live in the Mountains of South Carolina away from the city but are close enough we can get the few supplies we need. We too have several akrs. of land that is being used as a self reliant homestead with a natural spring that has ran for 85 years and a steep bank on each side so I can see for several 100 yards anything that is coming to the house. I too have cleared out the under brush and have maintained the natural thick woods. Keep the videos coming my friend ...

Always look forward to your videos, i often return to them to hear a bit of common sense & a bit of sanity. For some people ownership of things becomes a desperate form of self validation & the owner becomes owned by his possesions in a sense. "..don't need more knives"?! ..what an outrageous thing to say.
