    About Patricia
    ----------
Patricia Jackson, her husband, and their children live in her mother’s basement in the Roseland neighborhood on the South Side. The family’s only source of steady income was Patricia’s low-wage job at a WIC grocery, until the coronavirus pandemic forced her to take time off. Now a remarkable opportunity has landed on Patricia’s doorstep: a nonprofit called the Family Independence Initiative offered her financial assistance with no strings attached. In the short term, these cash infusions will allow the family to keep their heads above water. Looking to the future, Patricia and her husband hope to get an exciting new business off the ground.

In FIRSTHAND: LIVING IN POVERTY, WTTW explores intergenerational poverty in Chicago in a documentary series, reported stories, expert talks, and community discussions.
FIRSTHAND: Living in Poverty is part of the award-winning FIRSTHAND multiplatform, multi-year initiative focusing on the firsthand perspectives of people facing critical issues in Chicago.

@Marie Richard unfortunately a car is a necessity in most of America. If not a car, a motorcycle, moped, electric bike or bicycle. But that won’t work for a family. Her family needs something bigger then a 4 person minicar. The car could be borrowed. The story clearly doesn’t give enough details to judge for sure. On one hand, I understand the need for a nice truck to deliver high end meats, but on the other it seems they can’t afford the costs of the truck.

My direct deposit got delayed one week and I went to a local charity to ask for help... the woman denied me because she saw my car. I was flat broke, hadn’t eaten in days & was drinking water out of the bathroom faucet at my job. It was so demoralizing. I said all that to say you can’t always judge people on the car they drive.

We shouldn’t judge period. I’ve been there as well. It was a struggle to give up that lifestyle but I couldn’t accept it wasn’t for me. Once I hit rock bottom God saved me and gave me a second chance at life. But through that transformation I realized I idolized those material possessions. I was homeless still getting my nails and hair done at the time refusing to accept reality and responsibility. Accepting Christ in my life has changed me for the better. We can have those things if we want it through Christ but we must always remain humble and put God first. God bless.

She could be reusing press one and not an entire full set. Those can be pretty cheap and they’re reusable.
