This was awesome, not because I had a water leak, but I have a resonance rattle in the back somewhere at highway speeds I need to look at. BTW, my 2018 does not have the tape like yours.
Actually had a very similar issue on my toyota sienna where a water bottle spilled on the under seat amp which caused multiple speakers to cut in and out. After finding the problem I cleaned it up but one speaker was still dead, a replaced amplifier chip later and it was all good. No blown fuse there either. Awesome video much appreciated.
Thanks very much, Adam! You’re a Legend! I’m going to do this preventative product improvement to my M3, as soon as I can get my little hands on that Lexel stuff. ( I will stay away from the domestic silicone) Maybe alternative builders silicone will do the same, so long it sticks to rubber n painted metal. Keep those videos coming, you hear?

Designed in California, not raiing enough there so Installing some tape is perfect to hide or delay the problem until car is out of warranty and was certainly way easier and cheaper for Tesla than actually really fixing the problem with sealant or resisting the ruber piece, as it's very labor / engineering intensive. Sad thruth about tesla unfortunately. Will they get sued soon?
That is not tape, its sound deadning high density rubber and it's used to remove the metal drum effect from metal surfaces, but usually you wouldn't use it on metal corners that are reinfornced like that because it's not effective there so it's kinda weird. Either way that is not used for water leaks.
Now that I've seen this video. I would just do this to my vehicle when I get it. I've bought glue to hold weather stripping to the vehicle before when I owned a Pontiac.. that worked great and obviously sticks to rubber but I can't for the life of me remember what it was called. it was from the dealership though.
This Is a kwown problem , i can confirm early models does not have that silver tape. I had my amp dead just 2 months after warranty expire and replaced for about 300 euro .
@@990Hyper oh wow that's not bad. Was that 300 euro new from Tesla or used? Also when you say "known" can you send a link? I couldn't find anyone talking about it
With putting the sealant on, a trick that can be used is getting a latex glove and applying to a finger and then rub the finger around where you want the sealant.
Well I've got a 2021 M3 LR and never had this issue.....or any issue yet.....knock on wood. Probably because I live in Mountain View California where rain is a seldom occurrence. Just did this same patch to my 2020 model 3! I had a tuff time removing the trunk cable holder to put the sealant, and ended up breaking one of them ! Be careful
So sorry to hear that! Do you mean one of the two little zip tie mounts that holds the harness tight to the trunk? It should be pretty easy to replace it with another zip tie, here's an affiliate link to some kits I think would work amzn.to/4h2L9AE

OMG! I live in what is called wet tropics. Here mildew is the norm and pushes rubber away and then microbes proceed to eat the rubber. There would have to be Tesla owners in places like Hilo HI having mildew issues?
@@juha9703 Petroleum-based grease is generally not safe for rubber grommets, as it can cause the rubber to swell and break down over time. Lexel is super stretchy and I think it would let go if you insisted.
I had the same issue, but I was "Lucky". It didn't drip in like that it poured in and was visible on the floor of the trunk. It was a bad boot. I do not have the tape. From this single video I would say it needs to be removed. I'm curious on the purpose.
With the idea of preventative maintenance, I began to consider doing this mod. I believe just a diagonal bead of silicon above the grommet would do the job sufficiently. That strip of silicon should be enough to wick any water intrusion away from the grommet. As you've already got the experience in this area, what do you think of this idea?

I notice Adam carries a fire extinguisher, do others carry one in their EV?
