The gasoline nowadays is terrible. If your in a hurry try putting two handsfull of spare nuts, bolts and lock washers with about 16 ounces of diesel fuel inside the tank. Then shake them along inside bottom of tank. Observe progress and remove when cleaned. It works good if you don't mind a little work and you actually need the generator to work that day. Thanks for the videos, always learn something!
I've used Evaporust recently, and it's magic! Another commenter mentioned it's just a discoloration due to the chemical process. A high-end custom motorcycle company I know uses milk stone acid, and believe me, the rust they see in gas tanks is far worse than most generators will see. I prefer something water based that's safer for kids and the environment. Not sure how electrolysis would work on painted surfaces, only ever seen it used on bare metal, usually tools. Still experimenting with electrolysis myself. DC welder with high amps is one of the better ideas I've seen when using electrolysis. Higher the amps, the better the rust removal. Keep up the great work!
To derust the inside of a tank. Rig up some kind of geared down shaft that will turn 2 or 3 rpm. Put BBs in the tank and let her run for a day or so. The BBs will really clean the inside well.
Just found your video. I have the same Generator. NEEDED it and could not get started. Broke pull cord trying to start. Drained tank, replaced filter, changed plug and oil, checked spark but still had hard time starting... waiting on same replacement carb as mine is junk. should have filmed, but I was pissed I wasn't running.
Put a hand full of nuts and bolts in the tank and spend 10 minutes shaking it around the remove the nuts and bolts. I then use the pressure washer to remove any of the rust that's left. Dry the tank and add gas . 30 minutes instead of 5 days
Great video! I dig the technical/common sense approach to finding out the issues with the units! Your filming is stellar also so keep them coming. Stay cool! 👍👍👍
i know im randomly asking but does anybody know of a trick to log back into an instagram account? I somehow lost the login password. I love any tips you can offer me.
@Kaison Dante I really appreciate your reply. I found the site thru google and I'm waiting for the hacking stuff atm. Takes a while so I will get back to you later with my results.
So just an FYI, Evaporust uses chemical chelation to "remove" the rust. That's what the black residue is. The chelation process leaves a layer behind "staining" the metal. Not much you can do about it. Should be fine as long as it doesn't get in contact with water again.
Good video. Often I will put nasty carbs in ultrasonic cleaner for 15-20 minutes to let them soak. This will loosen up needle valves and jets. Then taking a cordless drill with a q tip using toothpaste, you can clean up needle seat opening etc and restore without having to buy new carb. Often, it just makes sense to buy aftermarket carb for $15 though.
The aftermarket ones are a good buy for the price, but I hate waiting. And sometimes they do not work very well or have strange issues like this one with the throttle plate.
Steve's Small Engines (RUclips) recently did a rust removal test. Used 20 different products for 10 minutes in an ultra sonic cleaner. Evaporust was in the top 4. Number one was toilet bowl cleaner, which is obviously more aggressive. I have found that sometimes good enough is good enough, and that protection will freeze forward progress.
Hello James. You might try 'Cure Rust' liquid after Evaporust treatment - this turns rust back into black metal by chemical reaction. Great videos by the way!
Using extentions on a torque wrench changes torque value significantly. The prefered method would be the shortest extention or even better none at all. (retired aircrart mechanic)
Yes I have noticed that also . I always try to not use extensions at all when Torquing but sometimes you have to use one . But always make them as short as possible or a deeper socket is better than and extension
I always advocate electrolysis. Washing soda is cheap so if it does not work well in any particular case then you have not lost much. Other approaches are always more expensive and if it does not work then you have lost the price of the liquids used.
I have had good luck with electrolysis for rust removal using sodium carbonate. You have to be carful with a fuel tank as sparks are an ignition source.
Looks like whoever had this previously also purchased a 100 dollar recoil assembly that does not come with the 10cent sticker. Lol I bet the sticker itself is over 20 dollars and probably 10 dollars shipping.
You made a request for the way to take care of rust inside of a tank I can tell you the way that I have done it with motorcycles is I put a chain inside it and rattle it around and knock off all the big stuff and then I buy a product called cream or there's another one I think it is big red and you basically tape up all the holes for this fluid in there rotate the tank around so that it makes a covering inside the tank and then dumped out the excess and let it sit and what it does it realign the tank it works quite well and last quite a long time hope this helps
Hi James RidGid generator 6,800 with a Yamaha MZ 360.The generator runs great but now it only put out voltage some time . the voltage come on and drop off . what you think is the problem and how can i go about to fix it. Thank you
If you lucky it’s a problem with the AVR or brushes. Also could be a loose wire or a bad circuit breaker. If unlucky then the stator might be on its way out. The only way to know for sure is to test the stator and rotor. If all tests good then would focus one those other three areas.
Best way is to drain it from the normal fuel outlet, run water though the tank and fill it with gas. I usually do not wait for the tank to dry to avoid flash rusting. But then you need to get any remaining water out of the tank. The water goes to the bottom so running a little fuel out of the tank a couple times will get most of it.
@@jcondon1 I figured it out, champion 4000,3000w the avr was dead, replaced it and motor wouldnt start, thought maybe dirty carb, nope apparently since 2008 champion includes a voltguard circuit, the volt guard is wired to ground, line volts, and outputs to low oil and kill switch circuits, out of range voltage causes a shut down and hard start state. I removed the line in power to the voltguard and was able to run and adjust avr which was set at 139 V brought it down to 120.1 v and it maintains that at load and short 3000w run of two heaters. I have the same generator but I have to pull too many times to make it start. When its cold it doesn't wanna start right away. When I put it on the sun and gets warm it start right away. What would be the problem any ideas?
That is a hard one to troubleshoot. Normally hard starting means a clogged pilot jet. But that is not usually dependent on outside temp. Still would start there and then check the valve clearance and spark plug condition and gap.
hey james, i just picked up the same generator, not sure if you still have it but one of my wires seem to be disconnected somehow, its a yellow wire that's a part of the DC to remote box pigtail, it looks like a 4 pin trailer harness. do you happen to know where this wire goes or connects to? thanks.
I have another video that could help starting at the 35 minute mark. Those 4 wires are used for the electric start and kill wires. ruclips.net/video/pCQ8tdNNiqU/видео.html
James I have another request that may make an interesting video. With the Honda EU2200i it is required to maintain the warranty an owner must have performed or perform a cleaning of the cylinder and the top of the cylinder head. The method they recommend is to do a tear down until these parts can be cleaned manually. This is costly and beyond many people's expertise. There has to be an easier method which could be demonstrated which could demonstrated using any generator. I am learning a great deal with your videos. When using a multi-meter could you give the settings and a quick explanation as to why you are using these settings along with the reasoning behind the placement of the contacts on the generator? Thanks again.
That is shocking about the Honda Warranty. There is no easier way to do that. Those generators run forever, most likely a warranty claim would be unlikely. Will spend more time on the multi-meter settings. Thanks.
@@jcondon1 I am sure the claims of warranty voiding consist of anecdotal evidence and are most likely exaggerated. It may depend upon the actual service center doing the work. Another claim I heard is Honda asking for an actual record of maintenance performed by the owner and receipts from the service center. It is only proper to keep records of any machine. Anyway I heard of a method where Sea Foam is poured directly into the cylinder head using the spark plug opening when the cylinder is at BDC and pulling the recoil cord to distribute the solvent. It is then allowed to sit until all liquid has migrated into the oil pan to avoid hydro lock. The oil is changed and the cylinder rechecked and the engine started to burn off the excess solvent carbon and voila. I would like your opinion and will not hold you liable for your opinion. Thank you and thanks for using my suggestion in reference to the multi-meter.
@@jcondon1 I know you do mostly generators. I wondered about how, where and how much you purchase them for. Also, how do you come up with pricing? They all look nearly new when finished and I think you are pricing them 150 -200 below new. Accurate?
