  • A lot of us Gen Xers like to collect things from our past. Usually in a nice curated room in the house somewhere. Just like me. There are countless influencers online that have some pretty rad rooms with awesome collectables. There is even a new push from younger generations that are discovering the 80s and choosing to adopt a lot of the style and decor from our era. With that said our rooms were far from the cool rooms we have today, but we decorated them to the best of our ability and made them our own. Usually with cut outs from a few of our favorite magazines and posters we got at the mall. Join me down memory lane as I go through what my room looked liked when I was a kid.

black light posters, pink floyd/fleetwood mac posters, farah fawcet, pat benatar, loni anderson posters, record player/cassette boombox (nothing fancy). I graduated high school 1984, joined navy in 85. family didnt see a computer until many years later. dad did have a shoulder video recorder in the 80's. good memories. my 15 year old granddaughter is fascinated with the 80s thanks to stranger things. I sent her a walkman along with many cassettes and have been filtering them to her occassionaly. lol

That's awesome! I completely forgot about the black light posters. I remember a club I went to in 89 that had string art all over with black lights on them and they looked amazing!

I had to share a room with two brothers - both younger. My mother would not allow anything to be put on the wall. Basically - if liked it and wanted to keep it - I did not post it. It was not until I moved out in college that I had a room of my own - The wall size Pink Floyd Dark Side Of The Moon poster, Heather Thomas and a few others purchased from Peppermint Records at the mall, the famous Man Cannot Live On Beer Alone poster, a few movie posters, and about 20 centerfolds I was finally allowed to put up. Basically the entire wall was covered. I remember my father having something to say about it - cannot recall exactly, but he was not impressed. But it was MY room.

There was a good reason Ferris's sister hated him. Their parents spent all her college money on toys for him! Good review of the way it really was for anyone who might have misconceptions... I did have a TRS-80 in my room, because no one else cared about computers, and a little black and white Zenith TV that I rigged a set of Realistic headphones to so I could watch it at night. And I still have an ancient clock/radio/cassette player with the flip numbers that I use to this day. The one thing I do miss is an original Mad Max movie poster that got lost years ago.

My room was pretty nice tbh I had all the attic to myself with a pioneer sound system, a whole color tv to myself, brownish velour furniture and chrome tables... In fact in was the living room stuff before my mom decided to remodel in some country living fashion. 😂
I'd pay a lot to have the same woody woodpecker sheets I had. Obviously some people on ebay are probably selling some for 1k or something...

Born 1980 here and living the millennial struggle so I'm still in my childhood bedroom, and it's pretty much unchanged from the 80s. Still has wood paneled walls and my old stuffed animals are still in there. only thing that changed was the flooring was replaced last year, and the toy box was replaced by a small desk that I keep my TV on. Still have 80s and 90s Mcdonalds toys and matchbox cars on my shelves too.

I wasn’t allowed to hang posters til my mom and step dad got divorced. Then she got lenient and I hung my Cure posters, Monkees, Sex Pistols, and little Smash Hits pictures of my favorite English bands on my wall. I had a big tv on a rolling stand. And those round plywood bedside tables with the fabric covering and glass top. Those were popular too.

I used to have Star Wars bedsheets when I was little. They of course got thrown out when they were worn out. I still have the Garfield blanket stored away, though. I also used to have a tiny15" or so black and white TV just so I could watch my cartoons without disturbing my 7 siblings. Still ended up watching on the living room TV now and then.

My room in the 80's the walls and ceilings were plastered with posters and magazine pages of Samantha Fox, Tiffany, Debbie Gibson, and photos of the US Space Program, and autographed astronaut pictures I wrote to them to get. Realistic brand tabletop stereo unit with single cassette deck, Record player and AM/FM radio. Small 13 inch B&W TV on a nightstand, and a small bookshelf with Peanuts comics, and an encyclopedia set. and an old steamer trunk with stuffed animals piled on top. Until around 86, and I started HS. Then it was blacklight posters of the GnR Skulls, royal blue walls, and hair metal posters with mode airplanes hanging from the ceiling, and cars on top of the dresser.
