i whould rather count the operating hours because people have different driving profiles. so instead of saying 8k or 10k i whould recommend your average miles per hour from your bordcomputer and multiply it with 200hours. so the oil always stays in the car for 200 operating hours but that doesn't mean you always drove the same amount of miles.
BMW recommends a 5W-30 oil, which should also be used when replacing bearing shells. Otherwise, it would be more appropriate to choose a 5W-40 viscosity for mileages of over 150000 km. However, the quality of the oil is much more important than the viscosity. It should be approved by BMW (LL-04) or comply with the ACEA C3 specification. In addition, it should be a synthetic oil or at least a hydrocrack (HC synthesis) oil. The most important thing, however, is to change the oil every 15000 km / once a year and at least every 10000 km if you do a lot of short trips. The prescribed maintenance intervals of 30000 km / 2 years are pure marketing and intended for fleet managers who only see the costs during the leasing period. The engine will survive these long intervals for the first 150,000 km, after which it becomes increasingly critical.
You are 100% spot on, if people use your advice, their engines will last forever. It is weird how many people ignore good advice, to cheap out on something that is cheap(er than rebuilding an engine or but a new car).
Hey Dr. Dean! Happy to see you back making videos here again! Great advice as always. I’ve been using 5W-40 in my N54 for the past 50K mi (10 yrs) and couldn’t be more pleased. Always gently bring the oil up to operating temp before pushing the engine. I replaced the turbos myself back at 81K mi, and the engine has run like new since. My E82 is a garage princess now, so only needs annual oil service, but prior to that I changed the oil every 5000-7500 mi.
I use Liqui Molly 5w-30 with the MO-S2 anti-friction and I change it every 3k in my N55 and I'm religious about letting my car warm up to operating temperature and always drive it real easy the last 5 or so miles before I shut it off. My N55 runs beautifulllllllll also use a magnetic oil drain plug.
I have a 520d, 2009 ,177hp, almost 200.000mil(198760). From new to this day I use only and Only 0-30 genuine bmw (filter too),fully sintetic oil which bmw recommend it to be change on every 20.000mil, and I have never ever changed it after 7000miles(Always between 5000-7000). And even to this day it burns Zero oil and on every change its always full on maximum as it was on the day of filing it up. I always worm the engine 3-5minutes and before I shut the engine I always leave the engine to idle it for 2-÷4minutes to work. Never ever touched the engine(besides regular(before time!)service, and its still working quite and smooth. .
Awesome video, and I change mine every 5,000 but am mildly annoyed at the service light, so I'm looking forward to finding out how to reset that to 5,000. Rock on!
Love your videos Dean. Have a 2007 E61 and have done about 8000kms in only a few short months. 5w40 on special at the moment and I've got a good filter lined up. I'm doing quite hard, daily milage too. I live at the end of a long, winding road that climbs to 600 meters. The car hasn't missed a beat but due to no real service history I'm gonna take no chances and do a few things as per your videos. Only issue so far is the steering going a bit stiff. The fluid is looking bad and the reservoir is original to the car so I'm gonna replace is and flush and bleed and hope that sorts it. Great content. Really helpful. I have every confidence I can look after my awesome car. It's so striking on White sitting on 19' 7 spoke rims. I love that you love these cars and this engine. It drives like an absolute dream and goes quickly and safely when you need it to. Thanks. Kiwi BMW owner.
I think a while ago you could purchase a longer service interval package from BMW on a new car which used a 'long life' oil extending intervals to 20k miles. Guess people wondered why their N47s went bang well before 100k. I got told by an ex BMW tech never to touch a car which had been on long service schedules even with a full dealer history.
Depends on the job.. to bring up compression, add a quart of 15w-40 diesel oil. To clean out the engine, a quart of ATF. in the summer, 5w-40. I run 5w-40 year round in the balance of the engine.

Thank you brother. My n52 used to eat 5W-30 as hell and ticking noise was loud all the time, no matter was it cold start or long-time idle with hot oil. With 5W-40 by Shell and BMW approve, N52 has been running good in Summer and I haven't heard valve ticking noise when doing coldstarts. Im not sure about winter should I use 0W-40 but I'll think about that later. You were true with 5W-40 on high mileage N52. Thank god I listened to you because it hasn't been dropping oil level almost at all in 5000 kilometers this year. Also engine didn't overheat after hard flooring in warm outside temperatures. + I used to change oils on N52 between 10-12 kilometers. Now I change at 3000-4000 kilometers and did already the second oil change this year and old oil seemed pretty decent than previous old oils.
I have a 1999 e39 528iT. It consumes NO oil. It has 269,000 miles. It is quiet, smooth and fast. It gets 25mpg. I change my oil, with 5W30 every six months regardless.

i also see a lot of guys who try to bandaid high oil temps with thicker oil for track use too. i never advise that if youre exceeding the limits of your oil cooler upgrade the oil cooler
ALL engines have some piston ring blowby. That, along with carbon particles in the cylinder cross hatches, contaminates the oil. So no matter what oil you use, it will get progressively less effective at friction reduction and engine deposit removal, as the hours of operation pass. So do yourself a favor and change your oil every 5,000 miles and use fully synthetic oil. I would follow his advice and avoid the 10 W in BMW engines. Always change the filter.
How does running a 10w60 oil longer to warm up cause it to be thinner? Doesn't a multi grade oil such as this act as a 10w oil when cold & then increase up to acting as a 60 as temps increase? 0-20 oil flows better when cold than 5-20 does, correct?
All oil's are not created equal and oil is not oil. Always read your manual and change your oil and filter at half the recommended km/miles suggested especially in a diesel

Probably you will have to change it at 12 months, before the 30k threshold, still may be over 8k. Longlife oil is just a selling gimmick.
