Edge: "But what if Doom had abandoned all the things that made it an instant smash hit with 30+ years of longevity and was a very early and inadequate immersive sim instead? Now *that* would be interesting."

      You're spot on!
That Edge review is the most interesting review I've read. It comes across as if written by a contrarian that kind of likes the game but at the same time doesn't want to be part of the group that praises the game. It's a bit weird; and quite funny.

Interesting vid. I didn't think doom had much story, until last week when youtube recommended me a doom lore video, and I was blown away. It seems doom has more lore than ark or destiny. I don't know where it all came from, but the video was 3 hours long, it was a little overwhelming. It felt like elder scrolls level of lore, but probably not that much tbf.

      First of all, thank you.
If you take the franchise as a whole then yes, there's a lot of lore. If you find or look at all the Doom bibles (design documents) + game manuals there is a lot of cool stuff there. Likewise the newer Doom games have a surprising amount of lore and story.
Since this video is meant to focus on the original Doom, I was mostly interested in what you can learn from the game itself with no external sources. Which is not much.
Honestly, a lot of lore or none at all, it doesn't matter, Doom is fun.

@@GamesfromthePast-Reviews Fair point. I wrote that comment early in the vid. I noticed that later in the vid you do talk more about the story.

Interesting. Most of what I present when it comes to the development was structured around a GDC talk where Tom Hall and John Romero went over the development. They do say a couple of times that some events might be a bit out of order, so a couple of things might not be very precise.

@@nerdodragonnerdpl4167 You might be correct with American McGee working on the story. He was part of the team that worked on The Ultimate Doom, so it's quite possible.

@@nerdodragonnerdpl4167 The dynamic of the id team back in the day is quite difficult to understand. Everyone seems to have that youthful headstrongness that says I'm right you're wrong. There were a bunch of disagreements and arguments between most, if not all, the members of the team.
Nowadays I think all of the id founders and the "second wave"(the first people that were hired) admit that they could have managed the situation better.
