I started the course in February and finished in early June. Then I spent the next several weeks building my portfolio and studying for interviews. I applied to 70 jobs and got rejected by 68 of them.
A few weeks ago though, I was blessed enough to get hired by a small tech startup company and I’m now making $92K a year as a remote UX designer in Aurora, Illinois.
I may be an anomaly and I attribute most of it to being in the right place at the right time, but the key for me was taking the extra time to focus on my UI skills, building a strong portfolio and studying relentlessly for the interview process.
Even though it doesn’t automatically guarantee you a job after completion, the Google UX course helped tremendously in me landing my first UX role and it was because of this channel.
Just wanted to encourage others to keep pushing and most importantly say thank you Aliena! ❤️

As far as education, I majored in Creative Technologies at Illinois State University.
They basically took any topic that was considered “creative” & “tech-y” (ex: animation, sound design) and threw them all into one big major. So I kinda had to sell myself a little on my resume to make it really apply to UX design.
As far as work experience, I worked in customer service at an insurance company, and even briefly made RUclips videos full-time before transitioning to UX design.
I think the key when not having related experience is having something unique listed (such as my RUclips channel). It also helps to focus on how your past experiences will help you in that upcoming role.

I'm currently in the course and am pretty impressed by it so far. I'm a former Instructional Designer and while there are always areas for improvement, whoever designed the course did a pretty good job considering the cost for the certification. Still, I was getting nervous because I kept seeing people on Linkedin saying you needed an additional BootCamp after the cert to land a job.
I researched a lot of the people posting about this and turned out, most of those people worked for the bootcamps lol. It is great seeing videos like yours that feel more authentic and show you can do things in a cost-efficent way. The fact you give specific tips on where in the course to look for real-life projects is also super helpful. Even the community you've drawn together is awesome -the comments here have also given me a lot of hope and are keeping me motivated. Thanks for starting this channel!

After receiving my Google UX certificate, I also landed a job as a UX designer. Key takeaways to land a UX role after receiving a certificate:
    1) Take your time updating your resume, get feedback, and reiterate

I've been a normal graphic designer for 25 years. Over a year ago, I took this course, but stopped it mid-way. What kept me from progressing was being un-able to find people who would help with research, and that was because the app I picked was not anything my friends had ever used (it was an art auction app). Some tried to help me, but gave up. I had 3 professional UX friends who offered to help, then ghosted me. Something I've heard is the UX field is too crowded (much like the graphic design filed!), with all the people who've taken UX courses.

    • @AlienaCai
      @AlienaCai  Год назад +17

It is indeed a crowded field. I also run into similar trouble not being able to find people to help. Eventually I turned to my friends and closest connection regardless if they are the closest target audience.
In real life projects, there are also many cases where a company does not have the resource for user research, so using secondary research could also do the job.

Just got onto course 2. And I have a plan for the projects they’ve listed as far as a real world project. That will be applicable to all of the projects I think they guide you in creating. I am super stoked, there are local companies hiring UX/UI designers with double the salaries I’m currently making lol

So do you *have* to have an online following (Twitter, RUclips channel, and so on) to get a job? I tried that, when it was still called Twitter, but I felt so fake. I hated coming up with content and chasing "likes." I want to just do what I do. I want to program and code and the online persona / branding myself doesn't interest me. I was in sales for years, I got out of it because of burn out.
How successful can you be without branding yourself?
I love your videos by the way.

This is a great question. You can build your portfolio with personal projects first. And use that to find real life opportunities such as parttime gig or internship, then later on replace your personal project with those real life project and find a full time job.

However, with so many places that sometimes span different industries, it can be tough to go the route of writing a templet cover letter.
