I told this to my parents way before watching this video. All my teenage times they violently objected and tried to prevent me from playing video games. However they did not say what else to do. Okay I stopped playing so what then what? No answer. Most parents do that "TURN IT OFF" That's not how it works. You lead your child and show them an activity that is worthwhile instead of computer games. You lead the way. Not just tell and threaten to stop. After all parents first introduced the video games, so they need to take more responsibility.

The problem is not playing video games. The problem lies in over-use and addiction. Back in the day everyone used to say watching tv for students is bad , now the video game took its place. Video game is an art form . Its like a lover of art admiring the painting on the wall. But the problem starts when the viewer stops his daily activities to observe just the paintings. The keyword here is moderation and making right choice to spend ones time.

Also video games have been corporatized like everything else, if you had a community of young people developing their own video games and playing eachother's games it would be more pure of an art form and evoke much creativity

I used to play video games like that when I was in my early 20s. There are worse hobbies, but if I could go back in time, wish I had spent the time either reading or socializing. It's not so much good or bad as good, better, and best. What is the best use of your time? Your time is for most people the most valuable asset you have -- and once spent, you can never get it back. You can never relive your teen years, your 20s, your 30s, etc. So it's kind of important to think a little bit about how you're spending your time, and make course corrections as needed.

I think it's the overuse of the video games that's the problem. Like with studying you need a break. I see no problem with a couple of hours playing once or twice a week and then the rest of your time is spent reading, socialising, learning, exercising etc. I played a few hours each week in my teens and 20s, had great memories and also achieved exciting things so it's all in a balance. I think watching a TV show is the same. It's not actually making you productive or helping you to develop but it''s a break to then recharge you in achieving your goals.

Map reading, split tasking, quick thinking and crafting are some of my favorite parts. now that im a adult, im getting more into science because of that. Anything, when consumed well within its certain limit, will not cause any problem.
It may rather help you in your development.
I like computer programming (coding). I'm not any professional programmer working in any company but still I'm too much fascinated about it so that when any idea gets popped in my mind and if I feel that I can bring it to life, then I literally forget about anything else that is far more important in daily routine. While I'm scratching my head on some error or new feature, I don't even feel hungry, or thirsty, or sleeping or anything.. just constantly thinking and starring the screen.
It's been more than 3 years I'm noticing this excessive fascination to coding, I got Thyroid problem, weight gain, digestion issues, etc but still I couldn't figure out how to control this addiction.
So... Yes!, Some hobbies are good for your skill or IQ development, but that doesn't mean that you should get addicted to it and start damaging your body.

My mom emailed me this and she doesn’t like the game that I’ve been playing recently (it’s a first person shooter (Overwatch)(this is the first first person shooter game I’ve ever owned/played)). I got into it not because it was a shooting game. I fell in awe from the cinematics and each characters’ stories and origins, their animation is absolutely beautiful and as an artist, I greatly admire it. The maps are amazingly constructed and very aesthetic and beautiful, just to name a few: Hanamura, Havana, and Route 66. I find it fun to play and it’s not like I play it for hours on end. Some days I don’t feel like playing. Ik some gamers out there get tilted or rly mad easily when they lose, but I just kinda brush it off and think, “maybe next time.” I keep a positive mindset when playing and it makes me enjoy it a lot more rather than getting angry about losing 4 matches in a row. I enjoy playing and know that it’s not good to play for so long, which I don’t, but my mom is so against me playing it. She’s never said it, but she makes comments implying it. This video is insightful and I like that he wasn’t taking one side or the other, very neutral about the whole thing.

With reference to this video, I have been playing games for almost 2 decades now. I did not like any of the generic sports I played, did not like to fit into uncomfortable social groups. There was no jungle, ocean, mountain within 500 km of my house in India so no I couldn't do any of that. I did have non-digital games but no one to play with after a certain point of time.
In practical reality, I never quite played games purely for fun, nah for me it was the level of immersion and quality multisensory experience. Games like MGS Phantom Pain, Assassin's Creed, Tomb Raider have not only taught me life lessons but also developed my interest towards CGI, Animation, and Design.
I have absolutely no regrets for the time I spent in videogames as they are fine pieces of art and one of the best mediums of story telling. At present, I am a 3D artist and a videogame designer :)
PS. I'm not talking about never ending trash games like PUBG, Fortnite.

(I respect Sadhguru more than anything but I really want to express my opinion too) - Video games are a great way for dealing with excessive stress (which is very common in this generation). They are good for enjoying with your friends for some fun (helps in socialization and communication skills). It's in no way a problem but excessive gaming can cause many problems. Playing games for 6 hours a day with no human interaction is really bad. But gaming is in NO way a bad thing. I too think physical sports are always the better option. Just to clear that up.
(And there ARE video game World cups happening in this generation. So we are not far away from a world where video games are NOT considered taboo and bad)

The fact of beeing an introvert is very good for an argument! I'm an introvert myself and highly sensitive and though I don't stay at home all day (I work in a hospital, I like mountain biking, I have a few close friends...), sometimes I really don't want to see another human beeing. Gives me the creeps. These are the times, where I can enjoy a good book or video game. And I think both can be highly sophisticated forms of art. And it really helps me to get my focus back.
Also I live in a place, where kids can not walk around and play. It is all restricted or dangerous or else you have to fit in. Who doesn't love their share of freedom. And where better to find it than in a videogame. No one can blame the kids for that...

there is one dimension about video game and movies which can make you feel connected to life more deeper then meditive state. its short term thing, but the feeling can always be accessed like being in meditive state, but im not gonna mention what it is. The way how these peoples are definately are not experiencing that

What is the easiest way to access water? Through a tap in your house or walk 100 kms away to a river? when one choses games to become meditative its like walking 100 kms away to a river to get the water. Not a very smart way of doing things.

@@Ahatcho21 absolutely, i dont defend gaming, please dont get me wrong its limited way of life, but i meant more its possible to experience blissful state through screen also, because what ever you perceive it becomes your reality. The blissful state i mean is what i have experienced, the gamers do not feel it. it goes much more deeper then that. In life there are many layers. if you only play in your adult life, the mind becomes numb. the less time we spend behind screens the better. especially phones

Sadhguru should look into a strongly emotionally touching game, one that brings peace and (self-)love to someone's mind. Maybe he will change his opinion.
Why do everything with an urge for development? Doesn't yoga and meditation teach us to do something just for the purpose of doing it? That we need to let go of having somewhere we need to "get" to?
Games just like books are great works of humanity, although not every game is, just like not every book is.
You can connect much more deeply to books and games in this time and age because in the society we live in it is becoming close to impossible to connect deeply to other human beings.
