Having a sense of humor is a sure-fire sign of intelligence, especially in young kids, who mostly tend to take tongue-in-cheek statements literally and don't recognize irony ("You smoke?")
I don’t miss Letterman and grouping him in with Carson is an insult to Carson. Carson was at least funny. Letterman was a narcissistic jerk whose one great accomplishment was to make it fashionable for middle aged men to continue to act sophomoric. He was a negative influenced of the culture while Carson was a credit to it. Carson’s show was light and healthy and appealed to the better side of us while Letterman’s was dark and disturbing and appealed to the baser side of our nature. His humor was ascerbic and biting. He tore down while Carson built up.
@@CSUnger : Clearly, you don’t remember Carson that well. His opening monologue was full of topical humor & jokes about politicians. And when in New York City, his guests included John F. Kennedy, Robert Kennedy, Nixon & other political figures. But when he moved the show to California, the show leaned heavily on Hollywood personalities & cheap laughs. Letterman, starting at 12:30, & being based in New York, was more experimental, more about parodying the whole genre. Carson always favored Letterman, & wanted him to succeed him as the host, but the network preferred Leno.
I appreciate how Letterman treated her like any other little girl. That kind of treatment towards highly gifted children is what helps them develop normally and socially. Good job, Dave.
This was an interview with a child genius. Meanwhile, a fellow commented that this interview was a (waist), a (waist) of time. How wonderfully amusing. She was tiny, and so she had a tiny waist, but I didn't see this as a waste of time, not at all.
Letterman: "What's the largest country in the world?" Lulu: "Russia." Letterman: "Well...the answers aren't here, so I'm going to have to take your word for it."
He didn't give her much of a chance. All she could do was answering yes and no, and time was gone. The interview was like the bubbles that was supposed to amaze her...puff.
Wow they weren't kidding. Look this kiddo up now. She has so many letters after her name for all of her degrees, I'm pretty sure they are going to move onto numbers and symbols next haha.
I'm surprised though that for all the cuteness, she was not taught to thank a person for a compliment. He complimented her multiple times about her dress.
She knew it was grandiose in meaning. ie. I expect you will coddle to me and I giggle, because it was so predictive. Yes I am young but I am NOT STUPID. Get my drift?
Dave was great with kids in his own way. Always treated them nice, and would throw in a few jokes over there heads that the adults would get, without being inappropriate.
I must say though, I wish we had got to see some of her smartnes here on this show, asking her two questions wasn't convincing me of anything. She might be smart and a genious but this clip didn't show it.

Good for you. I missed that.
Having a sense of humor is a sure-fire sign of intelligence, especially
in young kids, who mostly tend to take tongue-in-cheek statements
literally and don't recognize irony ("You smoke?")
That makes me feel smarter..
Wow she's a genius🙄 She's so smart that she behaves like a normal child to fool us
I miss Johnny and Dave. When Talk shows were great.
And didn’t talk about politics that no one cares about.
@@alextaylor8776 that no one cares about?! What planet are you living on?
@@Person-mh6xq Klingon Homeworld and all I got to say to you is yIDoghQo.
OMG, she was ADORABLE!!!!!
I appreciate how Letterman treated her like any other little girl. That kind of treatment towards highly gifted children is what helps them develop normally and socially. Good job, Dave.
Nov 2024: I just found this interview on one of my old VHS tapes from Letterman. Fantastic that she's well noted.
What an adorable child.
This was an interview with a child genius. Meanwhile, a fellow commented that this interview was a (waist), a (waist) of time. How wonderfully amusing. She was tiny, and so she had a tiny waist, but I didn't see this as a waste of time, not at all.
😂😂😂a waist of time!!!
A mind is a terrible thing to midriff.
@@sdkerby What an abdominal pun.
Thank you ; the level of nastiness of some of these commenters -- directed at a FOUR YEAR OLD -- is mind boggling.
@@patricias5122 As of this year she would be thirty six, but still. She was a sweet, harmless, adorable child.
He was right, that was a cute dress.
Letterman: "What's the largest country in the world?"
Lulu: "Russia."
Letterman: "Well...the answers aren't here, so I'm going to have to take your word for it."
She handles an interview well.
Like any other four-year-old.
yup,she listens think and responds in a timely manner.
He didn't give her much of a chance. All she could do was answering yes and no, and time was gone.
The interview was like the bubbles that was supposed to amaze her...puff.
She was precious!
hey guys, don't forget, there's significant overlap between high intelligence and high sensitivity. treat these special beings with lots of care
Wow they weren't kidding. Look this kiddo up now. She has so many letters after her name for all of her degrees, I'm pretty sure they are going to move onto numbers and symbols next haha.
All in non-subjects. The sort you get from a toilet paper dispenser in a university.
They really spent their time to explain and demonstrate this girls genius in this segment...
hey it's Letterman, what did you expect?...
The way she said cause people tell me is amazing ahahahahhh
I'm surprised though that for all the cuteness, she was not taught to thank a person for a compliment. He complimented her multiple times about her dress.
Good grief, really? 🙄
She knew it was grandiose in meaning. ie. I expect you will coddle to me and I giggle, because it was so predictive. Yes I am young but I am NOT STUPID. Get my drift?
Most likely she is autistic. Autistic people who have high IQs do not possess social graces, manners, or awareness.
Your comment smacks of sour grapes. Completely uncalled for.
Youngest-ever member of Mensa in 1989 at the age of four and a half with an IQ of 161
IQ-Inflation adjusted that would be 176 in 2021
And no life to boot.
Well, she said her IQ had never been tested.
@@sungam69 , humanity's intelligence has dropped that much, eh?
I think it's like grade inflation--higher grades given to boost self-esteem.
Dave was great with kids in his own way. Always treated them nice, and would throw in a few jokes over there heads that the adults would get, without being inappropriate.
@Chi Sam So your phone translate there, their and they're perfectly everytime? Wow you're such a better human than I.

@@Broken_Cracka If being liked by idiots is important to our society, then we deserve the inevitable collapse.
@@Broken_Cracka That's for sure, and our country is worse off for it. As a society we seem to resent smart people, but they have brought us so much.
I must say though, I wish we had got to see some of her smartnes here on this show, asking her two questions wasn't convincing me of anything. She might be smart and a genious but this clip didn't show it.
She was adorable, let her shine brighter and show her intelligence to all of us, interview didn't go quite like it should've!!
What intelligence? She isn't a Scientist or Mathematician.
I'm glad he was having fun with her and not making it a science experience. 😀
No affectation there and that is very smart for a young child.... She's adorable.
Omg the cuteness is off the scale

So lovely to get an update on lil lulu
Should have brought her back a third time. She was sharp and adorable.
I scored in the top 1% of societal intelligence quotient and I live a normal fulfilling life. I love God so I'm happy being me. My family turned down mensa when I was in the 1st grade. Some local college professors had me put in the paper for understanding vast chemicals and their interactions, also in the 1st grade. I hope my daughter is more intelligent than I and does something good to benefit humanity.
What a charming young person she was... a real sweetie pie.
I watched his show every night after becoming an adult in 1990.
It came on at 11:30 pm. I had to get up for work at 6:30 am. I couldn't do that today on 5-1/2 hours of sleep.
@@pattiday431 I wish I could get 5.5 hours of sleep a night. I'm lucky if I get a full 4 a night. Never watched this show however, can't stand the guy!
She was 4 y/o in 1989, so she's around 35 or 36 y/o now. Can we please have some followup as to what she's done in those years since this David Letterman show appearance?

Bill Bored - You can't seriously mean Letterman? He has been a jackass buffoon his entire life. There was nothing funny about him, but the size of his own ego. Couldn't stand watching him.. he was so untalented. Leno, Carson and the greats, letterman will never be.
@@ms.farmgirl Thanks for letting me know your opinion on Letterman. So interesting.
@Fvck Off Peoples opinions of a talk show host = FACT. Makes perfect sense, LOL :)
@Fvck Off You responded to my post..... yeah? I wasn't letting YOU know, I just made a comment. You just had to disagree, just had to let me know YOUR opinion. @Fvck Off Yours too. Ok, I'm off to watch some reruns of Letterman, best late night talk show host! Cheers.

"Lulu Cash Gibson" is a tremendous name. Also a great interviewer
@Chi Sam got me! Should've said interviewee. boy, my face sure is red! Thanks for the call out friend :)
@Chi Sam ever since I saw beauty and the beast as a young chap I have avoided the word! How dare you
Very musical! (Lulu - singer; Cash - guitar-playing singer; Gibson - guitar)
The model for Buster Brown shoes?
All that was needed was her dog Tye.
What a Little Angel!!
An innocent time in our country! Now a days they wouldn’t put a child on a mans lap, take me back to the 80s❤️
She wasn’t on his lap. She was standing in front of him.
All Dave needs is kid to goof around with and he's gold.
Johnny was great with kids too.
Looking at this she be 36 years old today love to see her again
Asking someone a list of basic, fact-based questions doesn't tell you how smart they are. It only tells you what they've memorized.
It was a cute interview but I clicked to see a demonstration of how she was a genius. I'm disappointed he didn't do a little more with that, but oh well
True that relatively speaking with the child prodigies in 2022 !! 0-o
@@PhyreReighn when I was in high school I was hanging out at a friend's house and his brother (a sophomore) asked me two questions:
1. Who lives on Pennsylvania Avenue? (I didn't know)
2. Who lives in a pineapple under the sea? (I said SpongeBob SquarePants)
Apparently The White house is on Pennsylvania Avenue so the correct answer is that the president lives on Pennsylvania Avenue.
My friend's brother goes on to say that most Americans these days can answer question 2 but not question 1, and how this was proof that America has gotten stupid.
Of course I recognized his argument as being heavily flawed because these questions has absolutely nothing to do with intelligence. But he was one of those people who had such confidence that they are right even if they are not
