In this tutorial, I demonstrate what you can try when you've updated to Lightroom Classic version 12, but it cannot update the catalog from version 11.
The video I did where I demonstrate the new features in Lightroom Classic ver 12 is here:

i recently bought LRC (& others) from adobe. (background: i had a previous version many years ago, i lost all my work, programs, PC etc [long story] but now im back, fresh start, blank canvas) so, i downloaded everything i wanted, when it came to opening LRC, nothing happened, it prompted me to "upgrade the catalog" so i did... nothing happened. it was running as a background process but not actually opening the program...
found this video on RUclips, tried the 'previous version' method &... BINGO! everything works perfectly....
    you're a legend, thanks a million :)

I thought of another way to do this. You can open up the problem catalog in the older version of Lightroom, select every folder and every image in it, then go to File > Export as Catalog... then try to convert that new catalog to the latest version of Lightroom. I'm unsure if it will preserve your folder structure, although I believe it should.

I had a problem after upgrading to Mac OS 13 Ventura and then updating to Lightroom Classic 12. I keep my images and catalog on an external disk and Adobe advised me to copy the catalogue on to my internal disk. Once that was done, when I opened V12, it asked me to convert the catalog and I selected an alternative catalog on my internal disk and it worked perfectly. Adobe told me that this is a known issue with Ventura and a fix is coming at some stage, but until that that happens, to keep my catalog on the internal disk.

Thank you so much for your video! Is the only one that talks about this topic. I did everything like you said, hopefully works 🤞🏼 but anyway the advice of the XMP files is great and I learn how to optimice the catalog

Great advice. After watching your recent version 12 video, I turned on the XMP option. This video reassured me I made a good choice. Thanks!

Thank you so much for this! Mine accidentally got upgraded when I wasn't ready and you helped me get back to my old files

If you have collections which are synced with Lr mobile I pretty sure you will get those back. I have been writing xmp files for ever and yes I had to create a new catalog which I was able to do because I had xmp files, mind you it took three days (72 hrs approx) for that catalog to be created

This is great advice... my concern is if I have a problem with an older catalogue that I might need to back to in the future... so hopefully Adobe has options..

Although temporarily using a rather old laptop running Windows-11, I experienced no issues updating the catalog from LrC version 11 to 12. But IMHO it is essential what Anthony already mentioned before: be sure to backup/verify/optimise your old catalog before attempting to upgrade to v.12. This way you most likely won't lose any collections and/or other stuff. Conversion should then run smoothly. And it's not a bad idea to backup again after the upgrade, to consolidate the new situation. My two cents.

The XMP workaround is great, but it's worth noting that some things will be lost. You mentioned Collections, but the XMP doesn't contain pick/reject flags, edit history, or virtual copy info; that information would be lost. Far better than losing everything, but it's something to consider.
Another advantage of using the XMP files is that other products (like Bridge!) can use the settings as well. Since I do use Bridge for some purposes, this is a big one.
But rebuilding the previous catalog is a better, if more painful, approach if it works.

I had a problem on two different computers and found that there was a lock file in my catalog folder each time. I simply deleted the lock file and it proceeded successfully.

This is scary! I have over 25K photos catalogued and managed by LRC and the last thing I want to do is loose my keywords. This really gets to my biggest complaint about LR and PS since I started using the products 3-4 years ago - lack of portability! I am specifically speaking about the inability of LR to move 100% of the work one does on a photo to another computer. I'm retired and like to travel. I usually go with a laptop and often do edits and culling on the laptop. I do write changes to the XMP files, but when I move my photos and XMPs to my working computer at home, the history of any edits is not there.
Some might suggest a cloud solution, but moving the large files from my Sony A7IVR through the cloud is slow and not practical, especially when traveling. I understand that LR is as much as DBMS as a photo editor, but there should be no loss of information when moving photos to another computer and EXPECIALLY when upgrading to a new release. Quite frankly, this is not acceptable!

Anthony many thanks for this. Now would it be sensible to wait a bit before updating to Lightroom 12 and hope that Adobe fix this? I would be devastated to lose my catalogue ( it's backed up twice, but even so....) or even just my keywords! Advice please? Try it but revert to Lightroom 11 if there are problems??

i prefer not to try this or update to 12, i rolled back to 11.5, too afraid to lose work

XMP files only store the final edits, not every single step. But it’s fine for me. I have been saving XMP files since the first Lightroom version. I don’t store any photo information in the database, just the keywords are stored in it. I have way too many photos to have them always available on my computers/network.
I do import the photo, edit it, use keywords and export it. Ctrl-a, Ctrl-s and remove the photos from the catalog. Next copy all photos and XMP files to a second disk and store that disk away from the first disk. I even use different brands or models for the two disks.

Thank you for the video but unfortunately I cannot access most all of my photos. I my newest photos can be accessed for DXO but not Lightroom. If lightroom cannot fix this problem I will be canceling my subscription. This i snot the 1st time this has happened. Do you have a tutorila for downloading my photos from Lightroom creative cloud?

I converted to v12 last night, only problem I had was all photos from 2022 didn't pull through, very strange, had to manually add them back in, the edited photo's appear as though they are OK, I think! It was late, however the actually edits are not available? Will check when I'm back from holiday. I unfortunately don't have advice for anyone!

My Lightroom has a nasty habit of just hanging and not responding.
Which unfortunately has happened mid prompt to upgrade my catalog I can't even get Lightroom proper to load up without said prompt.
Would the solution be to roll back my version?

I have a question with xmp files. I exported 5 raw files that had some obvious edits along with their accompanying xmp files. I then imported copied those 10 files to a folder on my MacBook Pro. Once that was done I told LRC to import the files, adding them to the current catalog in their current location. Once they were imported I was surprised to find that LRC displayed the original files w/o edits in the library module. However when I went to the develop module the edits were visible. Going back to library module w/o making any edits still displayed the unedited image. However, once I made any edits at all the image displayed correctly in all modules. How do I force LRC to write the xmp data to the current catalog when importing the files?

But . . . do you have any solutions for those of us who naively updated to Apple's Mac OS Ventura? Lightroom Classic won't open at all within Ventura!
