Hasn't aged a moment in nearly five decades and is still the most instantly recognizable, and timelessly classic, symphonic cinematic soundtrack of all time. Mr Williams is a maestro, and a legend to be compared to the greatest of cinema, and of popular classical music.

You simply cannot beat this. One of the best soundtracks ever. It's better than the movie actually...

It is *very* unfair to say that the music is better than the movie. It wouldn't exist if it wasn't for the movie. George Lucas' masterpiece inspired this awesome music.

Something that I think of every time I hear the awesome finale to A New Hope is the widely believed myth that everyone, including Lucas himself, expected the film to be a flop. There is simply no way on God's earth that John Williams would have written such a stupendous soundtrack for a bad film. Lucas is too modest a man to have gone on record saying he was 100% confident that his film would astound the world but that is what I believe was the case. He wouldn't have worked so hard (making A New Hope drove him to breaking point and killed his desire to ever direct again) had it been any other way. I imagine him being so enthused about the project that he told John Williams that what he was after was literally the soundtrack to end all soundtracks, the one that would shout out to the world, 'This is the greatest film ever made!' I imagine this because I hear those words every time I listen to the finale. There is no other soundtrack that one could reasonably choose for 'the greatest film ever made'.

@@barkley8285 You misunderstood me. I was saying that John William's score screams out to *me*, "This is the greatest film ever made". It doesn't matter where anyone ranks it. It is a score of obvious magnificence, not a score for a crummy film.
Addendum: Incidentally, I'd bet money that when you denigrated Star Wars as not even being in the top 30, that you didn't consider it's historical and cultural impact. As a film academic, I am confident in saying that there is no other film that comes close to Star Wars: A New Hope in those ways. Just check out cinema attendance figures in the years running up to 1977 and afterwards to see how A New Hope reinvigorated the public's appetite for cinema. The merchandising rights were considered almost worthless after disasters such as Doctor Doolittle, yet post Star Wars the world was changed forever as far as film merchandising is concerned. Even film scores weren't as popular as they became post Star wars (and need I say that Star Wars (A New Hope) is the most successful soundtrack of all?). Influence on the field of special effects? The impact of Lucas' ILM on other films' success? The reasons why A New Hope is incredibly important historically and culturally are many.
