One of the best rock and roll songs ever written. Sax of the 50's, Great lyrics, soulfull melody, beautiful piano, great singing, a lastly great duel hardrocking guitars. for me this doesn't get much better. It has a little bit of everything. Just pure Rock and Roll.
I remember telling my friend in '74 that someone with the name of Springsteen would never be popular. Of course , I was right BRUUUUUCE is what I've heard the 10x I've seen him.LOL great rendition of my fav song
I had skin like leather and the diamond-hard look of a cobra I was born blue and weathered but I burst just like a supernova I could walk like Brando right into the sun Then dance just like a Casanova With my blackjack and jacket and hair slicked sweet Silver star studs on my duds just like a Harley in heat When I strut down the street I could hear its heart beat The sisters fell back and said, "Don't that man look pretty." The cripple on the corner cried out, "Nickels for your pity."
Your heart starts beatin' faster as you struggle to your feet Then you're outa that hole and back up on the street And them South Side sisters sure look pretty The cripple on the corner cries out, "Nickels for your pity." And them downtown boys sure talk gritty It's so hard to be a saint in the city
Them gasoline boys downtown sure talk gritty It's so hard to be a saint in the city I was the king of the alley, mama, I could talk some trash I was the prince of the paupers crowned downtown at the beggar's bash I was the pimp's main prophet I kept everything cool Just a backstreet gambler with the luck to lose And when the heat came down it was left on the ground The devil appeared like Jesus through the steam in the street Showin' me a hand I knew even the cops couldn't beat
@kaninz Don't quote me on it, but I think it's actually, "The Devil appeared like Jesus through the steam in the street..." which I have always found to be one of the great lines ever in rock lyrics. The Boss was a damn fine poet in his young early days.
I've heard it's either Pete townshed or a guy name Pete Harris who asked bruce to play this song before the show but I don't know If it's either of those or not.

That duel is one of the best things rock n roll has, and ever will see.

bruce looking for lungs at 2:30
To think He only sold 20 000 copies, orginally, of the album.
Weird stretched out visual but killer performance. Of course!
y pensar que Bruce salió muy disgustado del escenario pensando que todo le salió mal.
