A massive thank you to WIlliam from Tassie for the loan of his fresh Steiny. I like this one a lot, though I'd be waiting in the queue for a 39mm. And even then I might be tempted to swap it for flat sapphire and a cyclops. Still, it'd be cheaper than buying Orlando's. Cheers, Jody

An homage like this, a reference to a watch that is discontinued a long time ago makes so much sense, especially when it's so well made.

Like all Steinhart vintage models (that have the option), the "Steve McQueen" looks so much better in 39mm. I had both sizes of this model on my wrist and in hand at my local Steinhart-dealer and when you see them side by side, there really is no choice. 39mm works so much better for those vintage pieces - it just looks more authentic.
I also had the "Double Red" and the OVM side by side in both sizes and all of them looked so much nicer in 39. In fact, once I had seen the 39 vintage models, I bought the smaller OVM on the spot and put my 42mm OVM up for sale on a watch-forum.

I'm one of the people who justifiably need larger watches. My wrist is 7.5" on a good day. I have one 39 and it will be perfect for formal occasions, but it looks a bit toy-like. I'm glad they have options for everyone. I WANT to own vintage, but with my hamhocks demand at least 40, preferably 42. I'm jealous you can go to a Steinhart boutique. I'd so love that opportunity!

I really enjoy all of them. I did have my local Rolex AD add a cyclops for me - it isn’t hard for those that want one. Just order from Esslinger and then have your jeweler use IR glue. Attention to anyone watching in 2022 : these (or anything sold for Euros) is currently discounted for Americans because of weak Euro.
I got this GMT exactly one year ago, summer 2021, after watching this review.
At the time I paid $560 total, including shipping.
Today (summer 2022) it's $500 total, for US buyers.
The Euro price actually incresed (both the watch and shipping), but because the Euro fell substantially vs the Dollar, the currency conversion means lower price for Americans.
And yes, I totally recommend this watch. I love it. My wrist is approximately 7.5 inches, and for me it's super comfortable.
Very high quality of fit and finish, just excellent 👍🏻
p.s. If you are an American buyer, when you go to their website, your price is "without tax", indicated in smaller print.

Really love this homage-- especially the 39mm!
In general, I love most (well done) Rolex homages. But I *hate* when the watch fools someone, at first, and then when I tell them "it's a homage," they look at me as though I'm trying to be something I'm not-- namely, wealthy enough to own a Rolex at all.
    That's just not my style!
And yes, this happened to me several times when I owned my Invicta pro diver; enough so that I sold it....
This watch resembles a Rolex that's been out of production for a while. So I'm pretty sure, that would solve my "not really a pretender" problem, at least in the circles I frequent these days...
    Thanks Jody!

Rolex would send their watches to celebrities gratis. Which we now know was a pioneering marketing move. It would be like an obstinate McQueen to get the watch and not help Rolex out with a photo because the watch was a "gift" after all! Perhaps that's how the "wore it privately" story was given traction.

Great review Jody. I have the 39 and love it. But I agree, a flat crystal, with or without a cyclop, would have been much better. In fact, I wish brands would go to a flat crystal if they can’t manage effective A/R coating.

Just purchased two vintage steinharts from gnomon. I really do love them with the exception of the bracelets. Both of mine are 39mm cases and the same oyster style bracelet with each. The links are garbage, with awful articulation. Also, the clasp could not be any more generic. You'd think with a "one for all" clasp they could have added some pushers. But, alas, the watches are going on some drab natos. And I still love them. :) Thanks for the review!

Don’t own a Steinhart but I was looking at a Yema Superman Worldtime GMT Coke to add to the collection and this bad boy definitely worth it at half the price. Your definitely right with how simple and well built this Steinhart is. Obviously the Yema has its own unique qualities but with in looking at this piece a little more it’s kind of grown on me over there, the Original Rolex and this one. Not a bad addition to daily watch lineup. I think Steinhart does a really good job with the watches. As for I am trying to whittle down my collection and only a few solid beaters. Just have the find the right place to unload them. I’ve said this before this watch collecting/ addiction is a tough one to break because theirs always something new to spark your interest and without the traveling it’s so easy to justify spending a grand or two on a nice piece. Thanks Jody for the review brother ! Big thanks for all you do! JD 🇨🇦

I’ve owned a couple Steinharts in the past and sadly the cyclops that they do put on their watches is pretty much useless. I think it’s advertised as a x1.5 magnification and I don’t think they even manages that.
I’ve got 7 1/4” wrists and the 42mm options from them wears WAY too big, I even put it on a NATO to try and get the effect of the lug to lug down and it just didn’t work. The 39mm though is perfect! I only got rid of my 39mm Ocean One so I could buy a Ginault OR2 and that’s been one of the best decisions I’ve made.

Thanks Jory! Always love seeing Steinhart reviews. As for Glycine, the model you want that bridges the gap is the Airman 42 (Ref. GL0066). Bought a banging GL0066 in April 2020 and have been extremely happy with it - Glycine basically invented the 4-hand GMT so the Airman 42 is more properly heritage for Glycine versus homage to the 1655.
