This might seem like a silly question, but is there any way to access Gmail? The reason I ask is that I'm really interested in the idea of detoxing, and this seems perfect. However, I usually use my phone to board the train, as the train manager scans a QR code for my ticket. Without the train app, that wouldn’t be possible. But if I could still access my emails, it would be perfect.

Nope, it's still useful to have video, a browser, and Google maps on my phone. I barely use social media so that's not a problem. If you have to buy a special phone just because of something like that, I think there's a bigger issue there that a phone isn't going to solve.

My view on the process point: they are building this phone to be the last phone you’ll need. No need for yearly upgrades like all big techs out there. This company will not have the constant yearly revenue of people upgrading there phones year after year. So to me, the higher price point allows them to exists and service this phone further down the road.

100 percent correct, everyone that is complaining about the price should read your comment. I bought this phone day 1, my phone plan is ridiculously cheap because I will have the light phone 3 and I won;t have to buy another phone for probably a decade plus. Those savings alone make the phone worth it. You are saving more money over the long term

I like the 3, if you are going to carry a tool it might as well be a multi tool. Tools don’t consume time which is why they chose the feature set of this phone. I’m looking forward to going simpler and hopefully there are people in this world that recognize the value in it also so I can talk to them because no one talks when they all have smart phones.

My IRIS Easy Flip alternative. For $60 I have rugged build quality, USB-C port, headphone jack, changeable battery, zero 3rd party apps, secure OS (neither Android or iOS), a rear camera, WiFi, Bluetooth and the following native apps: Calendar, Contacts, Messages, Call History, Gallery, Voice Recorder, Music Player, Clock, Calculator and an FM Radio. Best of all, it offers excellent PHONE performance while satisfying the original DETOX objective. I'm not certain the LP3's virtual QWERTY keyboard, flashlight and privacy-risking Map app are worth an additional >$700.

Oh I agree 1,000,000%!!! I’m one who would greatly benefit and am a bit desperate to greatly reduce my phone/ipad usage and live with far more focus and less pulls and distractions. Some things, you “can’t put a price on,” but then, at 70 on a fixed income, that $800 “price” is a tangible reality. I’m also trying to figure out how to go without a couple of medical apps (am a caregiver, plus managing my own diabetes with an app-tied CGM), it’s my cycling computer, gps and route creator, etc. Those are fairly essential lifestyle-and-health apps I’ve not figured out how to function without in what seem to me rather indispensable. But agreed - the distractions are a monster battle. The iPad is also very much tied to my work and studies - but a monster always also lurking.

Having no phone is better than lightphone.
I use a tablet as a phone. So I have all the features of a phone including a big screen for reading, but I can't carry my phone everywhere so I only keep it at home and use it at night.
At night I catch up with all my missed messages and Whatsapp, but I also bring it with me in a backpack if I need to draw or use Google location.
With that large of a screen I can't use it addictively, and only use it when I need to.

I dig the boxy industrial design on the 3. I understand why the cost is so high, they're not a huge company, this is a low quantity run product, and they don't have recurring yearly revenue. But I'm still not sure I could dump so much money on such a thing. The pre-order discount is nice, but I don't pre-order on principle.
I'll stick to trying to make my smart phone dumber. You don't need a dumb phone if you have the restraint to delete the apps that distract you. I'm a few months in to muuuuch much less social media use and I already feel an improvement in my mental health. Don't feel forced to spend money and work with what you have. Any smart phone can be dumb if you try.

Preorder price of $399 is nice but final price is too steep. $550 seems more reasonable. Will stick to my light II for now

It will guaranteed be lower once release happens because the CEO said he hasn’t came up with a set final price yet. The $799 is just a placeholder.

People complaining about price when they spend just as much or more on a phone anyway.
The reason people want this phone is for less distractions.
    That's what they want!
This isn't a massive company like Apple with all their dirty shortcuts.
This is espe good for people who struggle to get past social media addictions and tactics.
The price is fine. Especially when it will improve your focus, presence and mental health.
I'm getting this and a minimal phone.

You can't hook up your tesla to the phone. can't 2FA on this phone unless they allow a 2FA text method. They need to add the play store so we can add certain apps that we need to live in the digital world. I can't even get into my work without a app.

  • @somastudy

I have been using the light phone for almost two years and I was really looking forward to an upgraded model. I'm a little disappointed because they got rid of the eink and they added a camera. I understand that the camera is for functionality and to capture the moment, but it's so easy to get distracted by scrolling through the photo album feature, which I ultimately don't like. The eink created such a mindful experience with the phone. The price is a no go for me - $400 USD is $650 Canadian, which is outrageous. I ended up purchasing the Hisense HiReader Pro which doesn't have a camera, but it's eink with a fast processor and you can delete apps that you don't want to have with you all the time.

Is there a way to use this as a primary phone, but be able to keep an Android or iPhone and move the SIM card back and forth - effectively one phone number that can be moved between devices - for when you want or need to have the full smartphone experience?

    • @reagantrose

I tried to do this when I had the Light Phone II-my idea was to use that as my primary phone and just have the iPhone for when I traveled, but have the same number. There are some workarounds that kind of worked (try searching Reddit). But, unfortunately, there was nothing I found that didn't end up being a big headache in the end.

The design is awesome. I love small phones. But... I wish it was an Android skin instead of its own OS. This is a dealbreaker. I understand what they're trying to achieve, but it's nearly impossible for them to create all the essential 3rd-party apps and services that you personally might need. I have an hour of screen time on my phone already, I'm not addicted to my phone or anything, but this kind of phone would not allow me to use services that I'm used to (like my favorite podcast app, for example or Spotify, stuff like that). I think smaller screen already limits what it can do for people who need to limits themselves, but I personally just want a smaller phone and I think it looks cute. On the other hand, 1800 mAh battery in Android phone would've been a disaster.

If you think 800 is absurd , here’s some food for thought. Keep a smart phone and lose 2-8 hours of your day on the screen or buy back your time and attention by making this investment? You’re not buying a dumbphone, you’re buying back your time, and that’s invaluable.

The Light phone costs you $800 + the extra time you need to work to pay for your other addiction of financial irresponsibility. You know what's invaluable? Self control.

@@MorganTheGorgon That's like telling a kid, "look at the cookie jar but don't go in it." We have been conditioned for the better part of the last 2 decades to be wired to our smart devices. When you remove temptation and replace it, the behavior will naturally subside. It's not about semantics but the principle of the core issue at hand. Also its unrealistic to expect the vast majority of people to purchase a shittier version of something they rely on daily. I can also bet you if you're paying $75 for any phone in this economy you are a getting a premium product of inconvenience. This coming from someone who grew up in a frugal household.
