I have a question but first a bit of background…..Years ago I got rats from a person and one of them was unexpectedly pregnant I made the decision to let her have the babies…my question is what could have resulted in one of the babies being hairless? The rest of litter were not.
@diane9693 hairless rats, especially those without whiskers and eye lashes can end up with a build up of dirt in their eyes which can cause damage if not cleaned out under anaesthetic. Their skin is more prone to injury. True hairless mothers can have a hard time lactating.
There are a couple of genes that cause hairless rats, as far as I know at least one is recessive. Therefore, parents can carry it without being hairless themselves.
This is really fascinating, I've not seen anyone else cover rat genetics like this. It's something I actually really wanted to hear about as a fellow rat owner, it's interesting to know how it works. I always wondered why the babies that a rat gives birth to seem to all be quite different.
i can definitely see your passion in this topic! i know nothing about rats but your interest in their genetics is infectious
as someone who doesn’t know much about rats the photo examples were very helpful!
Thank you🥺
Incomplete dominant genes? Heterozygous nonphenotypic

@@FaithfulRattos I was interested in the genetics of why 1 was hairless & the others where not? His mother wasn’t? Can it be passed on?
