I like to do skirmish lines with greatswords and handgunners. I stick the handgunners in a straight line and put long lines of greatswords in between them. That way the ai will try and swarm the greatswords while getting blasted by the handgunners. In one line I will have a steam tank right in the middle of it so enemies can blob onto the steam tank and get shot. Behind that I have my huntsmen and artillery. To protect those i have 2 halberds surrounding them. I also have 2 demigryphs to deal with enemy ranged. The hero depends on what lord I'm bringing.
Most of my late game opponents are rush factions with poor ranged units, so I tend to prefer halberds with expert charge defense as a frontline with handgunners in Chevron or checkerboard formation. If I'm rolling in gold and have the time (logistics are never certain) I replace the frontline with steam tanks so the "wrap around" effect gives my gunners more targets. Helstorms just delete enemy infantry when massed and demigryph knights on the flanks screen the main formation while keeping the potential to flank myself. I'm aware there are better formations out there, but this has the added bonus of being what I would imagine an actual army would look like in the setting. Of course, serious anti infantry or armor piercing is going to ruin my day...
norsca AI army fielding 2 mammoths and a couple of skinwolves or vc armies with high amount of vargulfs nd knights would run rampant throughout that backline
I just line up my steamtank doomstack, order some pizza and occasionally heal damaged tanks with my life wizard while i eat and drink. It is a wonderfull sight what 17 steamtanks, 2 life wizards and Gelt can do to severals stacks of those pesky rats at once. I lost so many fine men to their damn ambushes and warppasta that eventually i decided to only ever fight them with steamtanks. Lots of steamtanks. And then i declare the entire map my personal highway so i can buy even more steamtanks. Reminds me, i have heard rumors that the chaos waste makes a fine parking spot for steamtanks. I should get there ASAP.

In my Empire campaign I got the impression it is not as strong as in WH2. Grom was able to wipe it with masses of black orcs. They can hardly take them all out with their cannons.
The only downside to your content is there’s simply not enough of it. Keep up the amazing work. Said it before but yeah would LOVE to see some of these lists for more unorthodox armies that can’t rely on archer squares, like Lizards, or armies that focus on ambush like Beasts. 🍻
Imagine living in a world of eldritch chaos horrors, Orcs that just wanna kill you and rat-men that want to do much worse thing than that. Having an army of Joe McNobodies, only armed with steel and a shitton of gunpowder has a strange fascination to it.
I did a campaign with Karl Franz using more historical units, halberdiers, handgunners, artilery and some cavalry (no steam tank or demigryph) into the late game. It works just fine, handgunners with maximum stats are amazing, they kill absolutely everything. Of course, heroes are the line holders.
So this was my empire late game army in WH2. Arch lector leading 6 handgunners, 4 hellstorm rocket batteries, 2 helblaster volleyguns, life wizard and beast wizard, 3 steam tanks and 2 warrior priests. Only for corner camps because ai will otherwise outflank you. Frontline which was of course heroes and tanks same way you showed in the video. Artillery and handgunners were put in line with half handgunners on each side of the artillery to give rocket batteries harder time for friendly fire. Life wizard for obvious reasons, and beast wizard because having a wind battery is good and with griffon mount he can deal with smaller threats like dogs that liked to ignore my front lines and other emergencies. Also naturally it would be best to have state troop hand gunners, but state troop crossbowmen were fine since they make enemy suppressed, giving your other troops more time to shoot.
You certainly know your Empire units well. Nicely done. I try to avoid corner camping and found more than 5 artillery left the front a bit too weak in hard battles so I opt for 3 Hellblasters and 2 Hellstrorms, but you've utilized your characters and tanks to help you achieve that stability so it sounds like you're a force to be reckoned with. Nice use of the Amber Griffon too - also like your use of the flaming crossbows!
".........when it comes to holding a stick and not running............." I lol'd so hard. Because it's true. I still love my Empire though. Most fun faction hands down. Franz is a giga-chad.
My prologue before i watch the video. I dont have warhmmer 3, only 2 (with every dlc). My favorite empire army was a doomstack, but it never left reikland. it was an army of 18 amber wizards on gryphins, a jade one and the lord was a hunter captain or whatever is called (for the stalk). Every single one with the boost income skill maxed and the noble trait.... no matter who came, reikland was always protected.
@@ElvenPlotArmour and if, for some reason a lesser region is blown, i love to imagine that fly corps going to that region, destroy the army that blew it, then the amber wizards roll up ones sleeves and start rebuilding the region, with the jade healing the people (usually when it happens i have enough growth to put the main settlement tier 3 in few turns)
If you think you can down then without disrupting your formation, then yes. A fun "panic move" is if a flying beast lands in the middle of your formation, CTRL+M highlights all missile units to focus down the beast, then frantically get them re positioned to the front and flanks
Hey @elven Plot Armour Been following your channel for a while now. You give some of the best, succinct and yet thorough guides I’ve seen, and for that I appreciate you. On top of that, you interact with your community. I firmly believe you’ll blow up given time. I doubt you’ll see this, but if you do, have a specific question I’d love your advice on. I play Eltharion, and quite enjoy him thanks to the mistwalker mechanics, but I think Tyrion is a better lord. In an Eltharion campaign, WITHOUT giving up the badlands (I like expanding there too) how can I confederate Tyrion as quickly as possible so that I can level him up before the AI ruins it? Thanks, hope you’re having a wonderful weekend.
Cheers for your kind words. I try to answer everything, sorry it just took me a while. Regarding confederating, WH3 functions much differently. WH2 is about confederating all lords and finishing a campaign Turn 140-200. WH3 has a different approach which is to maybe only land a few convenient confederations, but primarily utilize the Allegiance System to coordinate them. The intention is to have more smaller enemy factions for longer, rather than a few large ones while having the player's turns not be slowed down by holding too much territory. The end result is short campaigns are over turn 45-85 and long campaigns by Turn 120, meaning you can pass many campaigns as the different factions rather than a single long campaign. I thought I'd explain this because I find the approach grows on you the more IE you play. Now to finally answer your question, as Eltharion I ALWAYS hold onto the badlands. All the lords in that area have excellent traits for defeating them and you can power level Eltharion into a warlord (the campaign becomes directionless if you mope back to Ulthuan too imho). You're also playing one of the most unique campaigns and getting the most out of it, instead of Diet-Tyrion. I have a slightly outdated Eltharion Guide (early access IE) where I'll explain the safe borders to aim for to help secure the badlands and get those Fortresses and T3 walls up. Recommend at least the start and end of that video for the recap. As for who is better? Tyrion is the most underrated lord in the game. I did a series ranking the WH2 lords and I measured Diplomacy, Politics, Military Economy and Strategy on the Campaign map as equal metrics. Eltharion has 5 Star Strategy thanks to his cage, prison effects and mist walker insta-recruitment. He's stronger than Tyrion here and these strengths help him overcome the increased challenge. Eltharion is a crusader, rather than a statesmen - he's unmatched at what his campaign demands of him. However, Tyrion starts rich and safe with excellent buffs to diplomacy to help him unite the island. I find most lords are best when doing what they intend to do. On paper, Yvresse has the most powerful faction, but overall Tyrion is among the strongest lords in the game because he's a master diplomat and can control trade networks rapidly from a rich defensible position. Yvresse, Naggarythe and Avelorn are the most powerful HE factions in the late game, but that all factions are strong in the late game. However, even as an Imrik main, I don't think I've ever had a bad Tyrion campaign, and most experienced players will say the same. An accolade few can boast.
On the late game stack battle, I'm not sure you want to use demigryph knights like that. You are basically using them as frontline melee, just taking charges and suffering huge losses. It would be better to take those charges with a steamtank and use the demigryphs to cycle charge.
I agree, that's certainly an optimal method of play. With accessible formations I like to have units positioned in a defensive role before being utliised in an offensive manner as I feel it affords more forgiveness and flexibility - but if you've got the micro chops pinning then cycle charging is devastating!
Thank you for the video oh, I've been playing since number one came out and Empire was my least favourite with only two campaigns over the 3 games. This is going to increase my Effectiveness immensely
Burning Head is excellent vs light armour and can scorch a long line of units then travel into more units further away. The combination of the targets being lightly armoured and their placement made it opportune. If they were 70+ armour then the bolts of burning (bombardment) would absolutely be the better call.
It's mostly still relevant, but I expect at least 1 new lord to make its way into the Empire and then I'll remake it. The ironsight and Long Rifle units particulary add some solid options!
178 turns in playing MW campaign I ended up with 1/3 of the map 10+ allies, 100k round income and id figured that the best way to confront any army of any sizes regardless of how strong they are is with armies that works in pair of 2. The first being:1 lord, 12 tanks 7 spear/shield unit. And the second is : 1 lord and 19 helstorm rockets I once fough 1 capital re enforced by 3 armies with 6 stack composed of an assortment of tanks and artileries. It went like this: fire untill no ammo -> retreat -> new reenforcement -> fire retreat untill win
The first two games made me do this with Vampires. Vlad with all Spear Skeletons and Grave Guard, Isabella with a couple Vamps and 15 Vargheists. Destroys everything.
100% true - or at least run wide lines on the front lines or any units they may target. Though strong AoE spells are less of a compremise to square formations in single player in WH3 than they were in 2, since vortexes randomly wonder now. There's a reason why MP meta is wide lines lol. That said, I enjoy running more realistic formations in SP.
@@ElvenPlotArmour Indeed I would rather go with a classic single line (my most used) or double (used mainly when the previous would yield bad results) and a solid infantry is required for those to work effectively. I reckon these work very well in historical titles but not as much as in WH with all those huge beasts and flying monsters.
Im curious, if you would ever do a formation video for a themed army? Like an army full of skinks or savage orcs or something like that. I find theming my armies more fun just cause I get to use every unit in an army roster in a campaign. Still a great video! Keep Cookin’ 🔥💪
I'll keep that in mind - particularly the lizardmen and greenskins have a lot of lords so plenty of room for that! Cheers for the support. Your handle makes me laugh every time
Bottom left corner of the panel you can see a series of buttons. One of them expands out unit cards. select a unit then hover over neautral ground and you should see the stats of friendly and enemy units
Hey mate, I'd love to make a siege guide and might still but I'm honestly far from godly at sieges. I find capturing boring so I tend to position my troops at a weak entrance with fewest towers, target their ranged units with mine and pile into the gate until I get the army loses. I'll likely make it but hopefully they tidy up the siege battles before I do because they're horrible for new players with the janky movement.
why do your mortors and helfire barrage have 4 models? when im playing i only have one morotor or one helblaster in a unit while you have 4 i am very confused
That's true, but if the enemy has stacks of monsters then you can prepare hard counter armies for hard spam, but for the most part, multiple cost effective armies will give you reach and economic projection more than doomstacking. Your army only needs to be as good enough to win, every coin beyond this is an unnecessary expense. If they go monster heavy you can go full gun powder (hell blaster & handgunners) and a light wizard with a couple of priests, but that army also has bad matchups. These videos are as much about providing a framework of ideas so players can find feet and develop their own style.
Hi mate, no mods used. All my runs used for this are either VH/VH rest runs, but primarily L./VH runs to ensure all advice applies across the board most accessibly. If you're wondering how I obtained so many state troops, you'll typically confederate at least 1 and the cooldown is typically already going to be decreased. Let's average 15 turns and say 7 turns left. So long as your recruit them ASAP you can potentially land 3 in 20 turns. It's something I endever to do, simply because it looks regal :)
i simply put my ranged units in front of my army whether im attacking or defending to ruin the enemy charge or simply soften them up , i generaly dont like factions which revolve around ranged units its simply boring in my eyes and the ai goes batshit insane when its outmatched in the ranged department , i expect my infantry/cavalry to do the proper fighting , and when it comes to artillery i put them either in the center of my army or on the flanks to fire at the enemy for a while if im defending and then retire them once the infantry is in poking range , on the attack i use artillery to create gaps in the enemy formations so that my cavalry or shock troops can exploit that , sure i can flank or envelop the enemy but where is the fun in that when i can have a proper slugfest , oh and i forgot to mention , what i mean by artillery is cannon , nonsense like trebs have no place on the battlefield outside of sieges imo
I like to do 5 gunners - 5 archers - 4 artillery. Send few heroes to peel off units so they trickle down. Doesn't work as well versus a high tier zerg rush but, you know, not many things do.
I know that it is in vogue to maintain the gunline traditions of the Empire, but I come from the "old" faith and more conservative leg of Sigmaritism. Gunpowder is the compliment to my main anvil with cavalry delivering the coup-de-grace. Although I always make Nuln a predominantly gun line army for sure, because...Nuln lol. Play fluffy and play what you like men, that's the beauty of the game! Great vid! SUBBED.
This may have been mentioned but why dont you recruit and utilize all your state/RoR units and keep them in your armies? Are they too expensive or something
State troops are hired at lvl1 and can only be recruited once every 15 turns so I try to max those (or at least the good ones - handgunners, shields, outriders, etc). RORs, the best trick going is to keep them in your recruitment pool and spring them out if you ever need to get out of a pinch. Since you can't go back on Legendary, if you derp/rush/didn't see an army, you can panic recruit an entire doomstack of elite lvl9 units . You can absolutely use them in you standing armies but part of me feels like their XP is wasted since they're already rank 9 and the better long term plan is to train up weaker units so they can benefit from those Lvl7+ Lord skills (red tree at the end) as this will really carry you into the late game. Not necessary, but as someone who likes to bring balanced armies this strategy has never let me down!
Knowledge is power and there's simply a lot to learn in this game. My vids just aim to boil down the noise to simple steps so people can evolve into their own player from there. Good luck, general!
@@ElvenPlotArmour thanks! I adopted some of your tactics and it was going really well until the Barrow Legion suddenly came in out of nowhere and fucked me. Damn vampires
This is my fav formation in general and can be tweaked but Volkmar gave the opportunity to show how you can stack the Prayers with regular priests so this is how it ended up. I do admire the flagellant spirit though! Inspirational if nothing else!
Thanks, i feel like empire fell behind in game 3, everytime i fight against 2 armies or more i get my ass blasted and lose most of my army. compare that to chorfs where AI needs at least 2 or 3 stacks to even get to my frontline.
What's your best late game Empire Formation?
The one that has many demigryphs or at least reiksguard units. With some artillery and handgunners, covered by halberdiers as a meatshield. After many tries of playing Empire I personally found out that playing with cavalry as a core is the best and safest way for this faction. After all, demigryphs are only elite melee unit for them.
Handgunners, Hellblaster Volley Guns, 2 Demis, 4 allied Ironbreakers, Warrior Priesst and one Life mage to keep those tanks topped up.

Wouldn't a life wizard be amazing for healing all the single entities? Also, what's your opinion or replacing one volley gun with a luminark
Dark elfs next please!!
ok
Do khorne please. Im having trouble to face range baesd factions. Always suffer more than 60% casualties even with my higher tier units
Your handle makes me laugh every time
@@ElvenPlotArmour You have heard of the “Skullcrushers of Khorne” right? Well, I’m THE skullcrusher, if you catch my meaning.
@@Troub4dour Hahaha
How can you activate the unit overview where you can see their speed and how much damage they cause mid battle? Is it a mod?
Bottom left corner of the panel you can see a series of buttons. One of them expands out unit cards. select a unit then hover over neautral ground and you should see the stats of friendly and enemy units
can you make a siege battle guide if you have time? As a new player to tww3 im struggling on those a lot
Siege battles suck and I do everything in my power to just auto resolve them
why do your mortors and helfire barrage have 4 models? when im playing i only have one morotor or one helblaster in a unit while you have 4 i am very confused
Are your unit scales set to Ultra? This is the most popular, fielding larger units for bigger battles.
My best late game tactic is playing on slow motion.
I am old
Yes, but they are now in slow motion! Who's old now!?
It’s work because enemy don’t have large unit, monster to charge into gun group ?
That's true, but if the enemy has stacks of monsters then you can prepare hard counter armies for hard spam, but for the most part, multiple cost effective armies will give you reach and economic projection more than doomstacking. Your army only needs to be as good enough to win, every coin beyond this is an unnecessary expense. If they go monster heavy you can go full gun powder (hell blaster & handgunners) and a light wizard with a couple of priests, but that army also has bad matchups. These videos are as much about providing a framework of ideas so players can find feet and develop their own style.
Good afternoon sir are you using mod to increase the number of troops? Thanx
Thanks sir I really appreciate it but what I'm wondering about is how to increase the number of soldiers per unit thanx😃
@@KarlGalo-cw6ms go in game settings and change unit size to ultra lol😅
Can you siege with a comp like this?
As long as you have some artillery you can siege anything ;)
i simply put my ranged units in front of my army whether im attacking or defending to ruin the enemy charge or simply soften them up , i generaly dont like factions which revolve around ranged units its simply boring in my eyes and the ai goes batshit insane when its outmatched in the ranged department , i expect my infantry/cavalry to do the proper fighting , and when it comes to artillery i put them either in the center of my army or on the flanks to fire at the enemy for a while if im defending and then retire them once the infantry is in poking range , on the attack i use artillery to create gaps in the enemy formations so that my cavalry or shock troops can exploit that , sure i can flank or envelop the enemy but where is the fun in that when i can have a proper slugfest , oh and i forgot to mention , what i mean by artillery is cannon , nonsense like trebs have no place on the battlefield outside of sieges imo
Now do that with 3v3 stacks
A square that's slightly wider than it is long is called a rectangle 😂
I like to do 5 gunners - 5 archers - 4 artillery. Send few heroes to peel off units so they trickle down. Doesn't work as well versus a high tier zerg rush but, you know, not many things do.
Nice balanced build!
Please do some green skins videos!
They're looking like one of the next races covered... a lot of noise regarding them!
Great vid! SUBBED.
Glad you enjoyed it. Good luck in those campaigns!
@@ElvenPlotArmour cool I will try that next time! Thank you :)
I would love if you made a version of this video for the ork/goblin factions !
Wow, I am REALLY bad at this game by comparison
Knowledge is power and there's simply a lot to learn in this game.
My vids just aim to boil down the noise to simple steps so people can evolve into their own player from there.
Good luck, general!
@@ElvenPlotArmour thanks! I adopted some of your tactics and it was going really well until the Barrow Legion suddenly came in out of nowhere and fucked me. Damn vampires
Volkmar u have mistake😊 Demi gryf is stupid idea for this legendary hero 😊 better is flagrants more bonuses and this unit no leave battle 😊
This is my fav formation in general and can be tweaked but Volkmar gave the opportunity to show how you can stack the Prayers with regular priests so this is how it ended up. I do admire the flagellant spirit though! Inspirational if nothing else!
Idk feel like the bonuses for the tier 1 units isn't super beneficial to just run a stack of them late game
guy doesnt know what he is doing
Thanks, i feel like empire fell behind in game 3, everytime i fight against 2 armies or more i get my ass blasted and lose most of my army.
compare that to chorfs where AI needs at least 2 or 3 stacks to even get to my frontline.
Chaos Dwarfs are very strong, albeit expensive, though I'd like to see better Priest buffs in the upcoming reowrk!
