- Welcome to 'THE Hole At', where Golf Digest's Derek Duncan (our go-to for all things golf course architecture) breaks down the hidden histories behind the most famous holes in golf. In this episode, Derek dives into the long, but getable Par-5 18th hole at Valhalla Golf Club (Host of the 2024 PGA Championship). From its original slight dogleg-right design, to the addition of a tiered water hazard and a split fairway approach, to becoming one of the most storied and dramatic holes of the modern era, Derek explores the fascinating history behind one of the game's most iconic golf holes.

this and the every hole at series should never end
Every hole at Valhalla Golf Club please!!
This series is sooooo good!
Can’t wait to see it in person next week!!
Very cool
Need every hole at Troon and Pinehurst
We’ve got you covered.
Don’t be scared of making them longer videos. The people that watch them clearly love the detail so please embellish.
@@deanfarrimond7543 The Gameplan series is terrific as well. Every Hole At, The Gameplan, The Hole At are all exceptional.
17th at St Andy's. That is a nightmare - par is excellent there!
Is there an “Every Hole at Valhalla” video?? @GolfDigest
I think the 18th at Pebble has produced a lot of drama, but usually in earlier rounds.
Why? Because the prior holes tend to seal someon3s fates, good or bad. 17th is ridiculously hard if the wind is up. And the whole back 9 isnt a slouch.
If it were easier, I think youd see the 18th at Pebble be more dramatic.
@golfdigest Where is the every hole at Valhalla video?
not sure about the regularity stat. pretty sure st.Andrews has hosted more majors since 1996 (2000, 2005, 2010, 2015, 2022).
And Augusta National
True actually, there should have at least been a disclaimer. The narrator should have in fact stated -"blah blah is the course that has hosted the most majors since 1996, with the acceptation both the masters and the open" - basically this is the course that has hosted more individual uspgas that any us open course. Honestly guys do your research, such a bold claim as well...
Surprised they didn’t title this: “The untold secret to the final hole at…”

AYYYYYYY
Beautiful golf course but the professionals have out grown it and sadly it's become irrelevant after just about 40 years. I'm sure that par 5 was mean back in the 80's and 90's but now it's child's play when guys hit driver 350.
They moved the tees back 80 yards. Along with other holes. This course is plenty enough to keep hosting tournaments in the future.
They are going to eat this hole alive. Rory is going to rain 4 irons into this green.
That's kind of the point, though. Nicklaus wanted you to make birdie or eagle, to have a chance to close with a low number and create drama.
The only reason Valhalla hosted so many majors/significant events (all of which were run by the PGA of America) is because the PGA had a significant ownership stake in the club and was basically just scratching its own back by having events there. It doesn’t really have very much to do with the golf course itself.
Which was discussed in the video.
Oof. Someone posted without watching. They literally talk about this _at length_ mid way through.
@@Real28Yes, he mentioned it for like two seconds minutes after making it seem like Valhalla was Kentucky’s version of Pine Valley.
Bring back Ron Whitten, he was a much better presenter.
Great video. However, while this guy is ok, bring back the other older guy. He is a better presenter.
the old guy is better. who asked for this dude
Course is so lame
