  • I sat down for an IG Live with my buddy and blood chemistry wizard Dan Garner and we talked about everything from:
    1) What tests to order
    2) What to look for
    3) A case study - sample blood work interpretation on the spot
    4) A bunch of live questions
    5) Why you shouldn't use the "reference ranges" when looking at your results
    6) Some of the most common things we've seen in athletes over the years
    And much more.
If you like this, let me know and we'll consider doing it again. Might even expand to talk about other important lab metrics (e.g., saliva, stool, hair, etc.).
    Cheers,
    Andy

I just found you, through Andrew Huberman, I absolutely adore you. I’m 51 years old and I’m just starting my journey with my training.. I walked 8 to 10 km 4 to 5 days a week. And I lost 100 pounds.

Apparently I got my major wrong.
Also, I think many would love to see more of this. Maybe go through some studies together so the viewers can see the analysis flow of a study, have some systematic approach to exploring the needed labs based on symptomology or anything you guys see fit and please keep making the content as caveman comprehensive as possible.
I don't understand why such knowledge which can heavily improve the quality of life of athletes, regular individuals or people who suffer from diseases is not presented publicly anywhere in this day and age, thank you guys :)

I've only ever graduated high school, but at age 33 I am just as passionate about science and biology and anatomy as you guys and am constantly self-educating myself in all ways and have been obsessed with tracking my own data for years. I am my own health advocate and get blood work and ekg's every 6 months to make sure everything is in healthy range, not too high or too low. About 4 years ago, thanks to myself for asking for blood work, I saved my own life because I had hypokylemia, my potassium was 3.3! I think it was due to overhydration and not replenishing electrolytes while working in a hot warehouse. After monthly blood draws and a potassium chloride prescription I was back to normal. I then through diet, fixed my low ferritin, low vitamin d and low chloride levels. Thanks to all my logs I kept on myself, I realized I was consuming under 500 mg sodium a day often. Which caused symptoms similar to blood sugar problems. Now a days I get adequate amount of sodium and potassium and see a dietician and follow her recommendations as I work on trying to become physically healthier (build stronger more toned muscles and lose subcutaneous fat)

I have learned a lot from Andy's physiology videos, and this helped me understand some things I can do to help myself and other drivers I know reach their full human potentials. Would love to know if there are people , be it experienced trainers/doctors in Minneapolis that could interpret my results.

Andy, Dan, very much appreciate your time. One could assume you could talk for days on blood work and still only scratch the surface - A bloods question
Low Iron - Anemia - of course a million reasons why an individual could be struggling but for a young female that likely trains too hard/frequently and perhaps does not consume enough calories. Beyond the advice she was given - ‘take these iron tablets and come back in three months’ what questions would you be asking? Or beyond looking at iron levels what are supporting vitamins and minerals that may give you a clue to why iron perhaps is not being absorbed.
Much appreciated your time looking forwards to the next show.

    quick question.
i like doing weighted pull ups and i want to increase the intensity( well like get to 70 kg or something). And i started doing isometric exercises like holds on the pull up bar with my arms 90 degrees (heard it helps increase strength and activates more contractile tissue) . My questions is : Is it safe to do isometrics everyday? and how many variations should i do ( like chinup hold , ring hold, etc) how often do i have to change them.

That last part about making sure you get enough dietary healthy fats cannot be overstated.
Popular social media fitness is constantly trying to cut out as much fat from the diet as possible to the extent they are terrified of eating egg yokes! Even the ones who say to make sure to get enough fats are preaching a bare bones approach where you just satisfy the bodies minimum requirement.
I notice I always feel better and seem to make better progress in the gym when I allow myself to eat more fats than influencers suggest I should.
I’m likely having higher T and a better hormonal profile by being more open to eating fats and I hope more people can wake up to the fact that healthy fats should not be demonized to the extent they are.

Hi Doctor Andy Galpin. I got to your video via Doctor Andrew Huberman. He spoke in his podcast about counter productivity from overtraining (depending on how good you are at contracting muscles). I would massively appreciate if you could tell me if I am overtraining. I implement a push pull leg training split, meaning I work out 6 times a week. Hitting bigger muscle groups like chest and back for 24 to 32 sets per week. Smaller groups like biceps and triceps for around 16 to 20 sets per week. I focus solely on hypertrophie. I would say my mind muscle connection is really good. Am i overtraining and slowing down hypertrophie. Would love a response Doc!
    Kind regards.

Muscles do not have the enzyme glucose-6 phosphatase (G6P), that is when the glycogen in a muscle group is depleted: For example, after 3-4 sets of chest exercises (this is a real working set, not counting 1-12 sets). for 3-4 times then dial the phone and assume it's working hard). The pectoral muscle group at this time is much weaker and almost ineffective if there is more exercise (causes the opposite reaction at this time). Since G6P is not present, it is not possible to convert glycogen elsewhere (buttock, back ..) to glucose: ie the problem of bringing ADP to ATP for too long (it's a bit better if using creatine).
Because the liver has G6P, the liver will help convert glycogen elsewhere into glucose (before it has to be converted to lactate). But this is the story of how long it took for the liver to get the glucose into the bloodstream, so the more you train that group, the weaker it gets from the previous sets. That is, after 3-4 sets of really practicing, if you practice more that group, it will waste time, energy and be counterproductive. At this point should go to another group because remember, the other group is fresh and all the glycogen in it has not been drained. Instead of honing the other group in despair.

I know you guys deal with athletes and I believe it would be extremely helpful to a "ton" of 60+ older guys who are in good shape and "losing" their legs from muscle loss. We have the money to deal with the issue if it's correctable. I can't even imagine the amount of money spent by insurance companies for every "surgical solution" but the one that helps. Maybe we just need accept to grow old gracefully in a wheelchair, haha

Not very good -- scattered to the point of being useless. It would have been better to talk about common out of reference range markers for athletes and *then* talk about a few of these, i.e. their metabolic pathways and significance. An example of an irrelevancy would be yakking about the neutrophils as an indication of viral infection. Well everyone gets infections -- including athletes. That's NOT a particular, targeted relevant issue to athletes.
