How to Kick Faster - Combining Muay Thai & Taekwondo

- Опубликовано: 12 июл 2014
- Here is the first video of a new fightTIPS series: Trainer's Tip (New upload every Sunday). Here, we talk about improving kick speed by combining more traditional style Taekwondo aspects. A Muay Thai kick is much more harder, meant to build up momentum and power, while a Karate or Taekwondo kick is faster, and more of a linear snap kick.

Combining these two kicks creates the ultimate hybrid kick. You still gain power from the turning of the hips, but by bringing the knee more straight up and snapping the kick sooner, you increase the speed of the kick. Be sure to practice all three types and find what kick is the quickest and works best for you!

gotta lot of respect for you buddy i'm also a martial arts practioner I respect your knowledge

i love mixing styles around (hybrid), it throws your opponent off guard, especially when they are expecting a similar fighting style
yes that's only if we know how to time it accurately, otherwise we hybriders will be the ones on the ground
That feeling when you combine capoeira with wrestling 😂
@@onyx31914 I’d just end myself if I see anyone do that perfectly 😭

Helpfull vid. more like this.(punches, knees, elbows)
Definitely! I'll be doing a detailed trainer's tip every Sunday like this one.
fightTIPS congrats on 1million subscribers
U look like Paul Walkers lil Brother =)
I also noticed that when you did your second kick (the Taekwodo kick), that you pivoted your foot before you did anything else... Which depending on what you do in TKD, and what style of TKD you do, pivoting first is a bad thing. For example: I practice Olympic style Tkd, and if I pivot before anything else, it will advertise to my opponent that I am going to kick, which I don't want to do. An Olympic style round kick starts off with the chamber, the chamber is then followed up by the extension of your kicking leg in a front kick style and then hip flip and pivot all at just about the same time, then once you hit your intended target, you re-chamber your leg. That is for Olympic style Tkd.
Riiiight i was just about to point that out u want to pivot knee and hip at the same time. Im in Olympic TDK to.
U dont want to bring the knee up first then it looks telegraphed all has to be fast and one fluid organic motion .
it's anicekick good
Robert Howell this was years ago, stop criticizing a video that’s been out years ago when he got better now and plus he’s a coach not no Olympic medalist
In traditional TKD, you pick up your leg first, and pivot as the kicking leg is coming around.
Great video Shane! Very helpful! I love the detail you go into for each kick.
I really enjoy this,In my school im the shortest and probably weakest so i like to know how to defend myself just in case!
Thanks Shane
Shane: Excellent explanation between the two kicks. I really like how you explain the mechanical part of the TKD kick. Bring the knee up as compared to Muay kick.
I am using your training in my own TKD training locally. Keep up the good work sir
Love the break down and options you give us (not everything works for everyone).
We need this in higher quality, please Shane!
I know, I'm working on it! The current program with the drawing only allows me to export in 360p, so I'm working on it!
***** cool. Hopefully we'll see that soon.
I had an idea that that you may already be implementing but how about color coding.
Speed moves = Red
Power moves = Green
Hybrid moves = Orange
Joints used =circled with corresponding amount of power/speed the joint turns with.
Pressure/choke moves = Black
You could use the same colors each week to make it easier to follow along
Whatever Shane likes, as long as it's consistent from week too week.
Great video. I have a TKD background and didn't get into m.t. until later and I've found that I very much use a highbryd style as well. Great focus on the technique and angles. Great video. Thanks
Thank you SO MUCH! Roundhouse kicks were hurting my legs before but this fixed it and gave me more power. THIS IS GREAT!
Love the mechanics video. Looking forward for more!
Awesome, thanks!
***** Nice kick. Here's a tip if you prechamber your foot meaning place it pre pivotted it will increase speed and power check GNT if you don't believe me Be Well !
chris allistar can you explain further? let's say I wanne kick with my right leg
luccifer Merk place your left foot on the ground with heel facing your target. This creates accuracy and a natural whip as you spin. This way your not spinning your foot on the ground creating drag and preventing balance. Also doing your kick with a perroit like fazen does will ruin your shoes and scrap your feet if youre bare foot, notice he wears shoes here.Hope I helped Train hard fight easy! Also don't down Fazen he's real helpful!
+chris allistar one downside to this, it telegraphs the kick if you step with your foot instead of pivoting on it.
Awesome new format Shane! Love it! The slow mo and the drawing of angles and lines is very helpful!!!
The mma game is evolving fast, hybrid fighters are the future
Awesome vid Shane, very helpful. More like this please. I love this style of video because it's easier to break down
Maui Thai focuses on kicking with the shin... It's the most dense bone
tae kwon do also kicks with the tibia bone!
never tried, recommend? also he's going to break his ankle in fight...
That's y you condition the shin.
+Fernando Mendoza he made contact with the foot, so actually that's why you kick with the shin..
+DYNAMIC what I'm trying to say is that in tae kwon do you kick with the shin (tibia bone) and the foot. that's how I was taught! and it works really good. I never got my ankle, or foot brocken. and I would spar alot with heavy weights. and clashing shins happens alot.
I really like how the kick gets acceleration from the hips and the dead weight of the leg whipping through, plus the speed of snapping the kick at the end. Awesome video!
3:21 Finish him! Fatality!
Awesome! Love the hybrid.
Nice, BJ! See you in personal training soon.
***** lol didnt read his name before i read your reply was like WHAT lol
Very Nice Shane. Looping forward to more material. Thuis was a very interesting video to watch and Will definately use iT for my students
Awesome video Shane!!!
Excellent loved it. Good how you show the key points in the mechanics of each kick.
hey man just wanted to say thanks for the vids, i've been watching them for the last few days and they are very helpful and informative, keep up the good work Sir!
Great coaching Shane. Will try it later
Nice video man keep them coming
First kick I ever learned, my trainer showed me the basics and this helped me perfect it 😍
This style of video is extremely helpful - keep it up please!
Excellent video, Shane, i have trained Tae kwon do and i become black belt, but i think that not only have to focus on one style of combat, watching your videos i've also learned boxing, Muay Thai, and even watching movies or video games, i have developed other techniques like you said on the video about learn how to fight online, must have variety, take what we learn, train to improve our technique and if you can combine these movements as you did in this video, that is a victory for me.
You really are an excellent teacher Shane, a fighter never cease to learn and always train to improve himself and push their limits, like Ryu from Street Fighter... it sounds kind of corny, i know, but thanks, Shane, fightTIPS for life!.
Good techniques I like the hybrid kick you just displayed. Thank you Shane.
Really great ! love the whole "break down in steps" thing !
Great video as usual Shane. Keep doing these please.
Nice video. The first instructor to drill me on roundhouses had a Taekwondo background, the second had a Muay Thai background, and my own roundhouses wound up just converging with your "hybrid" kick as well.
Your form is awesome. Great tips much appreciated
This is definitely going to help with my Kuk Sool Won training. These tips are great , looking forward to more!
thank you! i was confused about how the pivot on the foot worked but i watched this video and now my kick is much better!
really great advice given here, i screwed up my knee by putting too much weight on my non kicking foot, lost my balance and fell awkwardly. over six months later and i still get in my knee when exercising
more videos like this! awesome video!
Looks great! Please continue mixing up these two styles! Muay Thai's power and Taekwondo's speed! Deadly combination!
That was perfect video, very important details you told to us :)
Cool little breakdown. Going frame by frame.
That hybrid kick at the end was really something, you can really feel the difference from when you are doing either of the two styles alone.
Thanks for your effort!
Helpful video!
Cool vid. Thanks. I really didn't know difference
Nice video. Your explanations were on the money.
love this, i started using it and i love it
Nice iv been working on my kickes to find a great everytine fast kinda kick and I think I found it
What a long way you've come man
Yes thank you I watched almost all your videos bro there this guy who wants to fight me I was nervous because my fighting skills were alright at that time but now my punches and kicks got faster thanks man
The last kick is what I consider a proper kick in general. Good vid!
I have always loved Muay Thai and i always love watching your videos.
This is a great way to build your technique up fast , record yourself go through it and find out what your doing wrong and figure out what you need to do to fix the flawed aspect of the kick.
lol awesome video!!! your face expressions :D Good trick to making the kick faster
Thanks for the tips bro, greetings from Costa Rica
This kick is so cool. I've studied Tae Kwon Do for eight years and this is actually also a traditional kick that we use. We have the faster roundhouse kick to do minor damage and or disorient your opponent and then we have the kick where we turn our hip over to deal with larger opponents and deliver more force
James Skehan - if your only way of "dealer with" larger opponents is a kick, you should be ready to lose
Do you know any drills I can do to get used to kicking with my left foot for example if I'm standing orthodox
I think that's a great tip, mixing the power of muay thai and the speed of tae kwon doe, they are both arguable advantages but put both together and you get a nice balance of speed and power
I like how you kept that in(head coming out) and didn't edit it out
Awesome lol
hey can someone help explain in more detail the hybrid kick? because to me it sounds like the exact same as the taekwondo style, is it that it has more of a round motion with a snap at the end ?
Thanks for this demo ! Would have been great to have a recap with repetition of the three kicks, to really watch the variances in real speed.
good video man, its always good to see people trying to share martial arts experience. Ive been training five years altogether with experience in Muay Thai, tae kwon do, Brazilian jujitsu, judo, and multiple forms of kung fu. A few people have been talking about how to land the kick, and the answer is with the shin. there is nothing to protect the bones in your feet and they are rather small and fragile. not only that but if you land a kick with your foot you can also get injurys like turf toe. that's rough stuff man. the shin is the best weapon for kicks. it is a lot stronger than you foot, and since it is closer to the power source of the kick, the hips, it contains more force than the foot does in a round kick. another point brought about from this video is hand placement during the kicks. during a kick your arms and legs should reflect each others movement. the hand on the side of the kicking leg is generally moved downward as the legs is kicked out while the hand on the side of your base foot should guard the face. the swinging of the arm down while the leg extends causes a more spring like force opposed to holding the hands in place. never let you hands get too far out of control. always try to keep your arms withing reach of your face and body to maximize protection and balance. so when you kick your elbow will lower but your hand will stay close to your body. another point is different people can use different techniques more than others. the maximum power to be made in a kick really matters on the abilities of that persons body. technique is one of the most important factors in the efficiency of a strike. so find a technique that feels right for you and work on it from there to hone it into your most powerful strike.
ive been in tae kwon do for three years but this is good advice
I like the way broke down the kick. I practise taekwon-do, I can tell you that in your last 'hydride' was an ideal taekwon-do kick, that is the way advanced practitioners do it. When you snap your hips bring the knee straight up while pivoting all the way around, you will be able to break several boards with a turning kick. And for Marry's sake use a kicking paddle.
glad some other mentioned the arms. when i used to practice roundhouses with my taekwondo/kickboxing instructor if i threw one and my arms looked like that he side stepped and got me in the gut, head, etc. plus ive known a few thai fighters who say you don't rotate all the way through a kick like that because your'e exposing your back to your opponent. if you miss or they anticipate it they own you.
Thanks for your insights. The final kick looks much like a type of karate roundhouse, jodan height. :)
Very interesting Shane. I REALLY like these analytical type videos, as they are thought provoking - just so long as you are willing to entertain other ideas in the comments.
I think that this video is really examining the question, "Just how hard do I NEED to kick when hitting in the head, and what risk am I prepared to take to accomplish it?"
Clearly compromising your position with a monster kick is not without its risks on numerous levels.
Nice video, thnx
Hey shane I have a question to say that is there a way I can write down what I learned, techniques and etc.
I like these types of videos
Ciao sensei ) thank you for this video! I'm good in kick but with this advise I'll kick faster than before... I'll train my self on this!
I prefer this type of kick...much more direct. Sneaks nicely under the elbows into the ribs. A trainer i had in Thailand showed me this kick, told me "don't worry about power, just a to b, power will come." Altho you obv have to be careful of ur foot/ankle going straight onto an elbow due to the diagonal angle. Good stuff mate!
Great inspiration! I assumed it would be the follow-through 45 round; found something even better -- something new! 8D
I like the trainers tip vids
great editing
I am wondering if speed in terms of the taekwondo version of the combined kick by striking with the top of the foot is better than the stronger version where you hit with the shin, (mma style). Thanks.
hi, nice vid as usual :) I'm wondering if u or anyone can help me? whenever I throw roundhouse kicks especially with force with my right leg, I have some sort of hip soreness on my right hip. this doesn't happen to my lrgt leg. It happens after 2-3 kicks. stretching helps relieve the soreness but it comes back when I start kicking again. thanks!
great video
I'm looking all over and can't find that head shaped kicking paddle anywhere. Where'd you get it?
since I'm a subscriber, I would like to express my feelings about this video. in the future videos, I would like to see you demonstrating with targets that do not need to be held by someone, that way you can give it your all without having to worry about being careful of injuring anyone. NOTHING in this comment is meant to be offensive, I am just a fan who admires your speed, wisdom and your heart for helping everyone learn to defend themselves; because no one should be helpless or defenseless in this world. Please continue to make videos and teach people. Continue to give people the power to protect themselves in bad situations, and be safe :)
More of this!
and what do you do if the opponet(?) catches your leg?
Very nice video
Good use of CoachesEye!!
You're great teacher !
Shane, can you help me on something? Ive been training at a gym for at leats 2 years, without consuming proteins, but I wanted to eat better and get the proteins from natural foods to grow bigger. What type of foods do I need or do I start buying proteins?
How would you compare these to the sanshou roundhouse?
So, would you say that the gist of your combination kick is that the hitting leg is moving in a straight(ish) line like a TKD/karate kick, but your balancing foot rotates like a mhua thai kick - does that sound right?
The combination looks like a Sanda Roundhouse- nice! :)
That's pretty much how I've always done round kicks since I was a kid, and my background is much more Taekwondo experience than Muay Thai. Good video though. I guess it goes to show your instructor makes much more of a difference than the system.
As a TKD person I was taught that the "proper" roundhouse is the second or the "TKD" roundhouse in this video, but I went to a seminar taught by another TKD master who said he learned the roundhouse "Muay Thai" way. It's all about the instructor; a name is just a name.
I have done Muay thai and now I am doing Taekwondo and I have tried this combined kick on the punching bag, but I decide weather it is done with the shin or the top of the foot, thanks.
wow I've been trying that same kick ,I've thought the same as you,I love the low Maui Thai leg kicks but I like the tae kwon do round kick also the low high fake s kick, that works with inexperienced people. great videos,by the way your hair looks better short
Where can purchase the head target. Need it for teaching
Well hello there i just wondering how do i kick faster. Its pretty difficult to me and i lose my speed when i try to kick combo
Hi Shane, thanks for the video. Been training TKD since young and started Muay Thai (MT) recently...I am having problems executing 60 repeated MT roundhouse kicks on the bags but have no problems doing a single kick on its own. What am I doing thats not correct? On the bags, do we use the upper shin or the insteps?
awesome ways
but is not necesary turn the knee in circular wa right? you can do the 45 step in diagonal , to create that circular way then come the move of the hips and the shoulder .
Great videos they really help with my training. Quick question, I am out of commission for a couple of weeks due to a back injury at work. It's nothing too serious but I have a grading coming up and the gradings at my club are very intense (they don't want to make them easy coz they don't want their students to be unprepared for real fights) and I'm worried about my time out taking away from my fitness. What can I do to keep fit without putting strain on my back? Thank you for any answers given.
Nice explanation of the two kicks. The modified kick you present is actually closer to old school (or pre-Olympics [pre 1988]) TKD rather than the sorry state of affairs today where point sparring is taught before more realistic self defence techniques.
hi there! is there going to be video about exercises to bild kicking speed?
My only concern is hand positions while kicking... They're all over the shop... Other than that, love the video breakdown, the slow motion and the graphics showing the directions!! Great video!
It's good to see an individual that can analyze the strengths of each style and experiment with hybridizing techniques. The hybrid kick here looks similar to kyokushin karate kicks. In the kick spectrum of power (P) to speed (S), I think some popular styles fare something like this. MT = P10/ S1, Kyokushin = P6/S5, Point Karate/ITF TKD = P3/S8, and WTF TKD = P1/S10. Note that elite WTF TKD practitioners also do not "wind-up" and telegraph kicks, so this saps power.
