Thanks Sarah for taking us into this kind of music, too. And for bringing us recorder people out of the shadows! It is so inspiring and I play (and warm up!) a lot more, since I watch your videos. We cannot value it enough that you share these things for free just out of generous reasons! Thank you so much! I have experienced with the piece "Gentle Walker" of Zana Clarke (from your recommendation: sing and play-video) and like it a lot! Is there more for voice and flute which is also for intermediate level? So: play on, everybody!
FWIW, the wildly popular calming anime Non-non Biyori has a theme song that features the recorder prominently. It's called Hidamari Michi. The piano accompaniment acts as the tranquil scenery and the main melody is played imperfectly with a recorder by a first-grader. They even have the child play the some notes wrong, but you can listen to the perfect version. I've never found the recorder being so aptly utilized in modern music.
Great choices as an intro Sarah ... I really enjoyed this sample. It's amazing that more has been written for the recorder since the 1960's than at any other time in history! Makes me want to explore more contemporary recorder music!
Last year I learned two pieces from Brian Bonsor's Collection, "Jazzy Recorder for descant recorder and piano:" "Get Up and Go" and "Serenata." They were challenging and fun!
Vermont counterpoint helpled me realize something: you can have tons of Counterpoint on a very slow bass line amd it still will sound like a lot is going on.
I've really been searching around to find some good recorder music. Thanks for these ideas. I'm also interested in movie soundtracks on the recorder...
wow. i did not know you could do that with the recorder! you are amazing. (ref to Austro,1991) i look forward to more of your vids. thankyou for sharing this.(:
Thanks for sharing these pieces. And, first of all, I really love your British accent. There are two recorder contemporary pieces I like so much. The first one is "Glass" (from "Minimal Preludes") by Karel Van Steenhoven. The second one is "Thymehaze" (for alto recorder and prepared piano) by John Casken.
Hi Sarah - One of my favorite contemporary and fun pieces (of a different genre) "for the recorder" is "Baby Elephant Walk" by Henry Mancini for the 1962 movie "Hatari." 😊 ♫♪

Not recorder, but tin whistle. My favourite is wiegenliedje from the Dutch popgroup 3js. Flutte is so integrated and even carrying instrument in this song.
Dearest Sarah, I am a big fan of yours from Germany. I learnt playing the recorder when I was 7 but it fell asleep later. Now I am nearly 50. I can play the Carroll's. I tried the Fantasies from Telemann, but even nr. 10 is too difficult for me. Anyhow you inspire me! I recently bought a tenor recorder. Thank you so much! By the way ... you are wearing a ring now?
Hi sarah quick question, is there any websites that have recorder music like this i cant ever seem to find anything anywhere and i didnt really now where to look 🦄
www.blokfluit.org is a database of (nearly) all contemporaey works for recorder! It’s free to register and often there is info of where to order each piece, or even contact the compose lr :)
Everytime you talk about contemporary music, it is always those that i find difficult to enjoy as a listener. Might be fun to play but not the kind of music that I can appreciate. But I wonder, because I like songwriting and I wonder if I compose a piece for a recorder but using the common anatomy of a song like verses, chorus, etc. Would that be considered as contemporary? Or do I have to make a free form kind of piece in order to be able to be considered as contemporary? I am a hulusi player and ive started playing recorder recently. Ive written some pieces for hulusi and i am thinking of making one for recorder.
I try and keep my mind open to new music. I'm not a fan of music that incorporates tape or music that uses certain sound clichés that go with this instrument. M. Petri has ben a champion of contemporary music and I own all her CDs. The music that I prefer from her recordings has a form, a tonal basis, and incorporates unusual instruments in the ensemble like the vibraphone or celeste. My favorite music for the instrument is from the early 20th century by Bowen, Rubbra, Scott, Leigh, Berkeley, Koppel, Arnold, and others. I also listen for what instruments sound good to me in combination with the recorder. For example, I much prefer the recorder / piano combination over the recorder / harpsichord sound. For balance in this repertoire, I prefer the modern recorders especially when th4e recorder is paired with a piano.
Can you please play a plastic recorder, because my family and I are going through financial issues and all I can buy from all the musical instruments is the *plastic recorder* And as you know that if I am gong through financial issues I can't go to music lessons so you're my only teacher...💘 So if you can please help me by playing with the plastic recorder you would brighten my future ❤️✨
Just as I did, you won't find contemporary pieces nice right from the first time you hear them... rather try to approach contemporary music by first listening to pieces like bartóks "concerto for Orchestra" or his "sonata", as well as Stravinsky's "Petrushka" and his famous "Rite of spring" and "Firebird". After that try some even more contemporary pieces and composers like schoenberg, webern, cowell etc. and you will slowly but surely start to understand what's going on...
Rocking! Wow I love contemporary recorder! Thanks for sharing the knowledge!

this shows that SOOO MUCh can be done with a recorder.
2:56 immediately had chills... Wow.
So cool with this cloud of reverb. And im a sucker for the minimalists so really nice that you got Reichs permission to do the arrangement
Fwah, Austro! Please record the whole thing. Love this very necessary video.
I was just looking for a tenor recorder...
Now, after a few videos, I'm such a big fan of this channel.
😊👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Austro gets me into a state of trance, thank you for that. I love your album.

Last year I learned two pieces from Brian Bonsor's Collection, "Jazzy Recorder for descant recorder and piano:" "Get Up and Go" and "Serenata." They were challenging and fun!

You are so sweet!
Thank you for your work!!
I love Australian composer Ross Edwards, writes a lot of meditation music plus contemporary music, his Ulpirra is really fun!
pi puh pip puh puriru! i like it, i had never listened to music like that in a non synthetized fashion
I’m in love with “Charavgi” by Calliope Tsoupaki. It’s amazing mixture of Greek and Byzantium/ Middle Eastern music.
Vermont counterpoint helpled me realize something: you can have tons of Counterpoint on a very slow bass line amd it still will sound like a lot is going on.
publish more videos of you playing the recorder live. Sounds really good.
Luis Noguez yes please post more live performances!
Nice. I enjoyed Ostrow and the Chinese one.
I've really been searching around to find some good recorder music. Thanks for these ideas. I'm also interested in movie soundtracks on the recorder...
Thank you so much for sharing with us! I would looooove it if you made a tutorial on syrinx by Debussy. It's one of my fav pieces ever!
Gosh. Brian Inglis was a colleague of mine back in the late 90s. Small world.
Wonderful!
wow. i did not know you could do that with the recorder! you are amazing. (ref to Austro,1991) i look forward to more of your vids. thankyou for sharing this.(:

I love Thymehaze, that ws one of the first contemporary pieces I tackled!
Do you Recorder Concerto by Dai Fujikura, Sarah? It is a very interesting contemporary recorder concerto if you do not know it.
Thanks for the shoutout! Love to hear you play RSRCH some time…..
Hi Peter! I'd love to! Nice to meet you on here, hopefully one day in real life 😄
Sarah, you are just wonderful. x hope to ever see u live.
Thank you for answering my question. I asked this some time last year 😊.

There is a great arrangement of this for recorders on AK music.
Do you have a video about your favorite recorder performers? I would really like to know about your preferences.
Where can Listen to your first inserted video? It’s so beautiful!
Great! 😃 Could you make a video trying the new Paetzold square tenor?
THERE IS A PAETZOLD TENOR HOW DID I NOT KNOW THAT?? 😄

Great! Thanks a bunch :)
I'm a convert. Much prefer contemporary to baroque now.
I love you little dance...kkkk!!!

Sarah Jeffery / Team Recorder ah thats brilliant thanks so much 😊🎹
Can any one suggest me some elementary level contemporary music that I can start with? Thanks 🙏🏻
Everytime you talk about contemporary music, it is always those that i find difficult to enjoy as a listener. Might be fun to play but not the kind of music that I can appreciate.

I am a hulusi player and ive started playing recorder recently. Ive written some pieces for hulusi and i am thinking of making one for recorder.
Your performance of the Reich piece sounds amazing. Is there any chance you'll be recording it?
...yes :)))
Do you feel the modern recorders like the Helder or Mollenhauer Modern instruments are better suited to the modern repertoire?
It very much depends on the piece, the intentions of the composer, and the taste of the player!
I try and keep my mind open to new music. I'm not a fan of music that incorporates tape or music that uses certain sound clichés that go with this instrument. M. I am looking for music for recorder quartet or quintet, but none of these things appeal in the slightest.
I've got to ask, is it possible to play flight of the bumblebee with a soprano recorder?
ohhhhhh yes!!
Sarah Jeffery / Team Recorder cool, cuz I've always wanted to learn it. Any pointers?
"Plainte" by Roderik de Man
that’s a great piece!!
good video )
Can you please play a plastic recorder, because my family and I are going through financial issues and all I can buy from all the musical instruments is the *plastic recorder*

That video is actually in preparation!!
Wow the first piece is actually a little bit Digeridoo-Esque
Ha I played both of those Chinese Picture movements on my bachelor exam. ^^
Steve Reich
:/ ehmmm... no, even though they're supposed to be "accessible", I still thought these pieces sounded weird...
