Southlake: Texas Suburb Becomes Epicenter In America’s Racial Upheaval

  • On paper, Southlake was a picture-perfect suburb: beautiful homes and excellent schools. But in 2018, a viral video of students using racial slurs in the mostly white school district created a searing divide in the once close-knit Texas community. What played out in Southlake - and the ensuing fight over proposed diversity plans - foreshadowed others across the country as peaceful neighborhoods descended into bitter arguments over diversity, education and critical race theory.

Parents - There will always be stupid people. Most white parents and South Asian people in the South don’t want to talk about race. The people whose kids use racial slurs that they think are cute or not that bad. The Asian man is making the mistake of thinking that assimilation is the way to go. Not working so well during COVID. These black parents need to stop crying in front of these ignorant people. They don’t think there is a problem, they think kids will say stupid things but they don’t mean it. But they get extremely angry if you point out that they or their neighbors need an education on why their insensitivity hurts others. South Asians think if you talk about it they will lose economically. It is not until an overt racist dangerous action occurs that they decide that something needs to be done. But mostly, many white people think that it is their neighborhood and that anyone who is not white is being tolerated and it is their right to stop the racism talk before it gets out of hand. In other words, if they become too nice, more non whites will move in.

That whole Southlake, Grapevine, Colleyville area have deep embedded racists living there with superiority complexes. I lived there for 5 years, and one day my little girl came home upset that her new best friend told her that she wasn't allowed to play with her anymore because she was a brownie. They were in kindergarten at the time, and my daughter didn't understand what all of that meant, and the other little girl didn't either because she always wanted to play with my daughter but couldn't.

I'm born and raised in Dallas; if you're black you know that any suburb above 635 is rife with racism and discrimination. From the schools to those expensive communities. It's never been a secret, it's just always been that way. When black families move in those areas they in a lot of cases want to not live around other black families, which is well within their rights, but the alternative is you may subject your child to the harsh reality of severe discrimination. There are great black suburbs on the southern side of town that rival those in the northern parts. It's unfortunate what these families experience but these are the reality of the DFW area. Dallas is segregated whether people want to believe it or not.

I'm proud of one of my ancestors but it is my current relatives that I am ashamed. My great grandfather fought in the Wilderness from Wisconsin. His company elected him sergeant. He and his fellow men were strong Lutherans and went to fight because they felt slavery was morally wrong. (They had no understanding of state's rights). Interesting side fact, he was a German immigrant and barely spoke English. (My grandfather was the first to learn to speak English, his older brother never did).
My relatives today, still living in Wisconsin, proudly display the Confederate flag and support groups like Proud Boys. I think my great grandfather would think like me, the US has gone crazy.

I grew up in the DFW metroplex going to school like Southlake. My parents were married at the time we moved over there for the schools, and I’m glad I still have four really good friends from that part of my life, but if you gave me $1 billion tax free I wouldn’t live in any town like those.
I thought in north a cliff and loved my almost 100% minority students because skin color doesn’t matter. They didn’t care that I was a white guy and they loved it we would talk about ignorant people like the majority of southlake and I made sure they knew the real world was like in regards to money and raise in religion and then it’s OK to go to therapy and that separation of church and state is a good thing and that you don’t even have to believe in a god if you don’t want it Cetera.
To the kid below I’m glad that it’s more diverse and you’re enjoying your experience, I knew the area I grew up in not the real world at all and maybe you do as well, but go listen to the Southlake podcast and go find video clips of the parents at the school board meetings saying what they did and then acting like the podcast in news stories twisted their words. When someone gets defensive like that just means it is true.

We see how the minority students are being treated in this school district. It must be very hard for the minority teachers, administrators, and assistant superintendents working here too. It might help if the current superintendent wasn't afraid to talk about this issue. Imagine working in a district where the leader can't even take a stand on racism. He's part of the problem.

CRT is actually quite dangerous mainly because of the critical part of the acronym. And to be honest, I had one teacher in my four years of high school who could teach such a course. For tests, she'd hand you a sheet paper with 10 words or phrases and we would have to puke out the who, what, when, where, the social, economic, legal, technological etc.... effects each word or phrase had on the American government, society, dominant and minority groups. Those who did well, may have earned a C- or C. Those who continued to study as if they were taking multiple choice were completely smoked. As well as she taught, to be honest, her efforts would be primer for an actual critical course.
