    Great video. I'm so confused on what license to get and when. This helped clear it up. Do you think you can list the four channels you talked about and which license I would most likely need? Thanks so much Dominique for the amazing content! This is exactly what I was looking for.
    In terms of the 4 paths, I suppose I would enjoy hybrid the most, at a firm with a higher standard. But, I understand it's highly unlikely and improbable to start there.
    I'd say starting in financial advice then moving to sales would probably be a better path for me, just because while I like sales and do well at it, I am really fascinated with the markets and learning how to manage risk and trade instruments for profit - which I think would fuel my ability to succeed.
    That being said, I'm still trying to feel it out and learn more about the industry and its opportunities as a whole. Any advice you could give me?

    I'm an advisor for a big namebrand firm and I honestly didn't realize how strictly regulated they are before getting into the industry. If I had to do it over I would go the independent route. It's much easier to advertise and promote yourself. The big wirehouse firms make you walk such a tight line when acquiring clients that it's mentally exhausting!

    Do you think Financial advising still has a future and demand in the future as it has right now ?
    There are many views which say “robo adviser” will dominate the market in the future.
    I am from Germany, just turned 17 years old and really thinking about getting in this field.

    • @DominiqueHendersonCFP
      @DominiqueHendersonCFP  4 года назад +19

      Thanks for watching and the comment.
      Definitely not the case for the US, and I'd doubt it looks different in established markets like Europe. Here's the deal...automation has its place and should be replacing some of the functions that humans do inefficiently (i.e. portfolio rebalancing, asset allocation, completing paperwork, etc.) However, robo-advisors will never be able to relay empathy to another human. This is a soft skill advisors of tomorrow will need to develop in order to not be "replaced".
      I recommend listening to this podcast for more insight: podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/between-now-and-success/id955311743?i=1000447868010&fbclid=IwAR2zX1vHj11GZbqZlTcVaSUQ5S5bAwSNAo3lxKCcGLB4hPNAaHcyp8EVFsk

My question is where do I start? How would I know that they are a private firm who value client to advisor relations? I’m still in college but actually know someone who will soon be hiring people after the corona virus thing passes over and things get settled because he’s trying to grow his business. A friend that actually inspired me bc I use to think people in the industry were all just money hungry lol, well there is nothing wrong with wanting to make good money I just find it wrong when people will unnecessarily screw people over for some extra crash, which to me is fucked up probably bc I grew up in poverty so even a $5 scam was detrimental to me. If your in Southern California, I might be able to get you an interview or something. It’s always best for you to do your own research on a co. and maybe try and interview your employer while on the interview yourself to feel if somethings the right fit for you.

The thing is that I am a Mortgage Broker and I own my own mortgage brokerage business: Mortgages by Alfredo, LLC. but I would like to offer other products to my borrowers such as term life insurance (I also have an insurance license) and talk to them about opening an IRA account. So I am considering going for my series 7 (but I need someone to sponsor me cuz Primerica don't sponsor you to get a series 7) or Series 65 to ask as a Financial Advisor and charge a fee instead of a commission. To me, that is more fair. I would appreciate any advise. Thanks.

    I am rather new to this industry, about a year in and working for Fidelity, but I want to work independently. I have been in mortgage for 20 years and I am great at sales..... I am just looking for more independence than fidelity has to offer. I've always been 1099d. What are some good companies to work with if you are interested in building your own business?

    From a general perspective I would certainly advocate the fiduciary standard as opposed to the suitability standard. I've heard mention of few and far between certain commission products that are cheaper for a client than going fee based, such as A share mutual funds held long term compared to a fee only portfolio that's continually charged. Wondering what your input on this particular dimension of this conversation would be?

    • @DominiqueHendersonCFP
      @DominiqueHendersonCFP  4 года назад +1

      As long as how you are compensated is not a factor in the client making a buying decision. If you get paid via commission, let them kow and don't keep it from them so their behavior is influenced.

    • @josephballinger6721
      @josephballinger6721 4 года назад

      @@DominiqueHendersonCFP can certainly appreciate that perspective. I saw in this or another video you had said that you generally just outsource commission based business to a trusted third party. Do you find it easier to manage your practice focusing solely on fee only portfolio management? Just asking bc I've been considering getting into advising myself. I'm studying for my SIE/7/66 licenses currently (work back office at a BD currently, I think we're technically a BD/RIA bc we offer both commission and advisory services) and considering starting to work w some clients on the side, and I'm wondering if it might be easier to focus on one fee structure as opposed to trying to do it all so to speak. If I had the option to do both, do you thi k it could be a little much to manage? Or do you know people that manage it pretty well?

    • @DominiqueHendersonCFP
      @DominiqueHendersonCFP  4 года назад

      @@josephballinger6721 I actually reverted back to fee-based for personal reasons (recently) but maintain what I previously stated above.
      At the end of the day, this is nothing more than a philosophical debate within the industry...my experience is that clients don't care.

    I don't think you need a fiduciary, just someone you trust which can be hard. to start they must be humble and take the time to get to know you personally as far as your goals, etc to really understand how to lay a path for you. Of course check out the results every 3 to 5 years and track those smaller milestones and ask were they not completed because of my lack of willingness or the advisors'.

      Lot of interesting points but I fear many DIY, FIRE and other folks will feel differently during the next recession. Most current market participants that down play the role of good financial advice haven't experienced a down market. I'll be curious how that plays out when it does...it's inevitable to happen

      Dominique Henderson correct, all I see are book authors promoting themselves (their sales) and tell you to fire your advisor. This wave of advise will lead many to over spend in business venture and never start a nest egg. When the wave comes, and they always do, they have nothing. I’ve learned so much in this journey and don’t believe the hype of DIY for everything. “Plans fail for lack of counsel, with many advisers they succeed.”

    Here is the difference. Working for a broker can make you money maybe at the cost of your client. If you work fiduciary you might not make as much money but you are working for the client.
    A business that values its clients is a smart business.
    To me there really isn't an option, helping the community helps America and I am all for helping America. Heck right now I'm serving and when I am out I'm going to pursue a finance degree. I personally enjoy working with money to make money and its an incredible and satisfying feeling for me.
