- This climb at the Bob Marley Crag in the Red River Gorge is Bayes' hardest ascent to date. At one week shy of 10 1/2 years old, he may be the youngest person ever to send the grade. Bayes sent this on his 3rd day. It was his 5th try on the route (7th if you count the 2 tries it took him to do Ultraperm 5.13d which shares the finish). This was the last full day of our trip and it seemed like the send was low probability. However, he did great on his first burn of the day but fell because his fingers numbed. The second burn was by no means perfect, but he persisted and made it to the end. Definitely one of the most impressive things he's done to date.
This is an edit of several different angles we got of Bayes climbing the route. Some of the clips are from the attempt before he sent as the quality was better (fewer leaves and branches in the way). Lots of resting was edited out. Some of the clips are zoomed in digitally so the quality is not quite as good. This captures the moves and the feel of the send. However, this angle does a terrible job at portraying the steepness of the wall and how bad some of the holds are.
The clip that Bayes goes for and then doesn't make is one he was actually supposed to skip because of rope drag. It's good that he realized at the last moment not to clip that draw. The next section where he cuts loose with the rope behind his leg was definitely one of the most stressful sections of the climb for everyone watching but Bayes kept his composure and pushed on through.
Thanks to Aaron Halstuk, Braxton Rodgers and Sam Romano for filming.
I'm too short, I can not make that move...
But then THIS VIDEO... AMAZING KID!
Possibly the youngest person to send 8c+ in history! So impressive!
Such great endurance and mobility!! 💪
Wow what an amazing route and send, congratulations 👏🏽👏🏽💪🏽
Speechless!
CAN NOT WAIT to see what this guy accomplishes during his climbing career. Amazing send dude
Dang, way to go Bayes!
Great send, Bayes! Keep crushing :-)
From his POV probably all juggy, but almost all BIG moves + twice the length of the route + much more run out. Nice bolt skipping.
OMG, that's awesome!
i came here from an article about Brooke Raboutou, a female olympian who climbed 8b+ for the 3rd time in her life and then there is this kid who climbed 8c+ at 10 years old....wtf
Probably the difference in route grades versus bouldering grades. An 8b+ boulder problem is actually harder than an 8c+ route. Confusing though since the two grading systems use the same symbols.
Misses the clip at 2:55, shakes it out and goes on without it.
Question, what's the strength:weight ratio of a kid who weighs 72 lbs?
Nice!!
Dayum!
