    “Running makes me feel like I’m at my most human self,”
    This. I’m constantly told I don’t need to run, having been slim my whole life. But what people don’t understand is it’s not about losing weight or even staying fit. I feel most human when I’m running. Sweaty and with aching body yes, but all the more human for that.
    Keep running lady, and I’ll keep doing the same. Sending you love all the way from Malaysia. xx

      jbt She talked about how most of the runners were white males. They're mostly white because, I guess not many women or black people join those races, its not some 'glass ceiling' thats causing this. Also how is she breaking the mold, shes just running, if people think fat people don't run and just eat that's fat peoples fault. They must be eating and not running for people to think that.

    I have run 7 marathons. I'm a little bit heavier (at least for a long distance runner) and let me tell you, I regret not losing weight before those races. It takes a toll on your body when you're carrying around all of that extra weight (I'm 6'0", 210 male). I have now lost weight (Down to 180) and feel A LOT better running. Also, there are plenty of females that run long distance, probably more than males to be honest, and last I checked, plenty of black people run long distance too.
    TLDR; being fat and running long distance is not good for your joints. Being black and a female doesn't mean anything.

    • @Свободадляроссии
      @Свободадляроссии 3 года назад +3

      @@stephfo Your focus should be on nutrition. Eat low-calorie dense unprocessed food in a significant caloric deficit. Then you think about sports, which would of course be a great step, just counting steps is a great idea. Don't do anything drastic though, the risk of injury at that weight is far too high for exhausting exercise. Lose a bit of weight first then start working out seriously. Good luck

  • @HermannTheGreat
    @HermannTheGreat 7 лет назад +50

    There is a huge variance in individual bone density, physiology, recovery ability, muscle fiber allocation, neurological health, skin composition and thickness etc. Most people will never be able to run an ultramarathon let alone a regular marathon. In this woman's case, her accomplishments are awesome, but she is obviously eating large amounts of high calorie, higher fat content food and that is why she hasn't lost much more weight. She has a ton of muscle, but also a great deal of fat. Just dropping another 20-30lbs would remove tons of stress from her joints which in the next decade if she doesn't change will force her to stop running.

      Wrong, most people can run a Marathon with adequate training but choose not to. An ultra marathon is technically any distance above a Marathon so that is also possible for most people.

      I'm actually curious as to what is actually going on. Whenever I needed to lose weight, I always ran. But that's when I'm healthy aka not taking any over-the-counter pills. I have found that, some pills, will make you gain weight whether you exercise or not. I don't think that's her situation though.
      I agree with HermannTheGreat that she is consuming high caloric amounts. Her body is strong, and I'm sure her bone density is superb but if you run a lot, you're burning a lot of calories. She could have a thyroid issue for all we know but the fact remains, if you're running that much, you should be losing weight.
      Not to mention, losing that extra weight makes you a better runner i.e. every professional world class runner that has ever broken a world record.
      I think the plus sizer runner thing needs to be rethought. If you can run that much, why not lose the extra weight?

    • @arthurg1425

    I love how all the comments are bagging on her weight lol, like you still missed the point, did you even listen to what she said? She's not asking you to "agree" with her weight (as many of you phrase it), she's showing people that your weight doesn't define you, you can still be strong and chunky. And as an overweight black woman myself, I've always wanted to run since I was in middle school and figured "it isn't for someone like me", and I found her story incredibly inspiring. She's not out there to beat records, she's out there for herself, and I love that.

      Amen. This white girl finds her inspirng as hell. 14 years ago I had all but 4 bones of my back fused together. 2 years ago I lost my thyroid to cancer, and a year and a half ago I had a hysterectomy. I am not thin anymore by any stretch of the imagination. I can count and restrict calories until the cows come home- Im never going to be skinny again. But this past year I managed to break out of the 5Ks, and do my first 10 miler, 3 hour race, and my first trail half. I do it to be healthy, and to help control my weight, and to prove to myself that I can. I don't get why people have to be hateful. Im willing to bet that the majority of the people on here who are being nasty little trolls can't do anything close to what she does.

    • @keeganmartin2689
      @keeganmartin2689 7 лет назад +7

      I applaud that, however, I think the main issue most people had with this video (including myself) is that it brings up race where there is no need to bring it up. Black or white, red or blue, skin doesn't matter here. This should be a wholehearted discussion over making a healthy society, but instead they made it a race issue. You and Blair brought to the comments what wasn't in the video. A neutral approach with a positive message. That is not to say that the message of the video was entirely negative, but it was uncalled for and in many ways incorrect- many if not most of the best runners in the world are black men and women. I agree, weight doesn't define you entirely, but I believe it's your approach to your life (and the proponents included in that: diet, exercise, outlook...) that define you. Weight and moreover body type is often times seen as the culmination of those efforts and therefore a common lens through which you see a person.

    • @naestse4786

      Idk your race Keegan, but every minority wishes that race wasn't ever an "issue," but this is not the world we live in. Even here in my city of hippie-vegan-land, CA, I've had someone shout the N word from their car at me this month as a walked to my bus in my scrubs. And when you're the only "kind" in a sea of one specific other "kind," it's a lonely feeling, and you will be singled out, even if no one intended that, it's human nature to group up with people that look like you. Besides, I was referring to the comments saying "being fat is still bad she's telling a bad message." Anywho, I'm up for intelligent convos, cheers friend.

      @fishbuddy547 7 лет назад +2

      You're right, there's no need to be rude and she's a cool lady, but I don't think all comments regarding her weight were necessarily meant to be mean. Like someone brought up her joints, and the stress and wear a higher body mass could cause on them, which is true. Of course, some people are just pointing out her weight to make fun of, which is not cool.

      All I hear is "I can do this... This... And this... And even though I don't know her personally or why exactly she's still big, I'm clearly better and qualified to give my unrequested opinion". Okay that was harsh. Idk how anyone that active could not lose weight except they have a medical condition or their diet isn't right. She did say her doctor told her to make changes and she did so...We just don't know and it's not okay to judge someone face value. The point of the video is, even if you don't look like the stereotypical runner, don't be afraid to get started. You can still be big, be in the process of loosing weight, and be active. Perhaps she was even bigger before and lost to get to this point, you never know.
      There's a line between promoting obesity/unhealthy choices as the end all, and being comfortable enough to walk outside with your weight, and with that self love, start making changes bit by bit. I'm rambling.

    Rant Time
    1. What you are doing as a PERSON, not a BLACK person, not a WOMAN, not an OVERWEIGHT person, just simply as a PERSON, is commendable and should be celebrated. Your "labels" are a part of who you are, but it has nothing to do with running and your lifestyle in general. It's a heart-warming story about how you changed your lifestyle for you and your son. What do your "labels" have anything to do with it ? Why do you segregate YOURSELF in your mind without giving people a chance ? If you have a passion for running, and you meet others who truly have a passion for running, what else is there to write about ? Runners who discriminate against you, are people not worth getting close to either way. It comes down to YOU not loving yourself. Why do you pander to the haters ?
    2. Unless you have a medical condition, if you continue to live that lifestyle of daily activity and eating a well-balanced, reasonably-portioned diet, you will not remain overweight in the long run, I CAN GUARANTEE YOU.
    3. The stereotypes of fat people being "couch potatoes" or whatever, are not okay. THAT DOES NOT mean being fat is a good thing. It is SCIENCE that it is UNHEALTHY. Being overweight leads to so many health problems. Fat shaming is not okay, and on the other spectrum, acceptance of "fat culture" is dangerous, particularly in a country where the junk food giants like Coke and McDonald's will dish out millions to maintain the message that you can eat whatever you want so long as you exercise. Don't fucking piss in your own cereal and call it milk. Stop it.
    I want to stress again, Mrs. Mirna Valerio, that what you are doing is a great and beautiful thing. But it sounds like you need to learn to love yourself and have confidence in yourself first and foremost. It is easier, and far more fulfilling to change yourself, than to attempt to change the world around you.
    Great Big Story, quite frankly, I'm disappointed in you.

    Running in general is not a male or white-dominated sport, but when it comes to long-distance running she's really not telling a lie. I run cross country and on my team and many other teams there are not many black people and there's not many females let alone black females. At a meet I'll see about 7 black girls 20 black guys at most. Honestly the most diversity in cross country teams really comes from Asians and Hispanics.

      Endomorph body type - for woman who are endomorphs we lose weight really really slowly. I believe it's part of the human design that there be a percentage of men and woman who put on weight fast (for times when there's plentiful food) and lose weight slowly when there is famine. In a situation where the survival of a group means that someone needs to have reserves so that they can still function, hunt, gather food and nurse babies. I am an endomorph. I experimented once by fasting on nothing but water for 40 days and lost 5kg. Within 2 weeks of normal healthy eating I put that back on and more.

    Congrats to that woman for her perseverance, dedication and accomplishments! Although Being fat and running are two things that counter each other! I've been overweight for all my childhood and the first years of adolescence and now that I've lost 33kg I joined my father's sport, running! When you run each step carries multiple times your body weight,and multiply that with all these step you take...What I mean is that it is not practical to be obese and run marathons and ultras!Also an athlete has to focus on health,and since I don't want to speculate on her diet, being obese itself puts you in a clinical risk ! Let's not forget perfomance. You can't run a 2.30 marathon when you are that heavy!I am still a few kg overweight and can definitely feel it when running. When you dedicate yourself to this sport being light is a priority! Anyway hope the best for her,good luck and even greater runs!😀🤗

    There was a time when I would have agreed to this. But back then I was also in denial of my weight and hid behind fat acceptance videos comfort. I was born fat, I always have been fat, but it all changed when I tipped the scale ever so slightly to being obese. As a guy it felt like because I wasn't strong or very male-looking I wasn't very masculine either.
    I do not approve of any sort of fat shaming.
    But some people have got to stop pushing being fat is "healthy" because it is not no matter how you look at it. sure a small percentage became fat because of deceases or medications but that still doesn't mean they can hide behind a façade of thinking being overweight is a natural thing. big bones are not a thing and no one is meant to be fat. obesity is nothing we should try and normalise.
    Please remember that. thanks.

    Thats awesome what she is doing. You'd think after watching this video and hearing some of her story people would see where she is coming from and be more understanding and supportive. It seems as though a lot of people have missed the big picture, because instead of focusing on why she running and the stereotypes she is trying to break, their asking questions like, "why are all the running shots in slow-mo?". Which is ironic because in doing so, they don't realize that comments and attitudes toward her of that manner are partly why she continues to run.

    TRUE STORY: Several years ago I was at a local 5K race here in Seattle. There was a stage at the starting line and an emcee was giving details of the race. He introduced a local marathoner,/ultra runner who had just completed her 267th marathon/ultra in 10 years...... roughly 26 per year. The crowd clapped in applause as she waddled up into the stage. She was by any definition obese with GIGANTIC hips and prominent fat rolls. The casual observer would assume she was 100% sedentary and would struggle to walk 1 mile. I've volunteered at the start and finish lines of the Seattle Rock and Roll Marathon and seen countless overweight and obese finishers with times well under 4 hours and many under 3:30.

    Marathon runner here. My first thought was to judge her based off her appearance and that based off that appearance allowed her the special privilege of being interviewed and on the show. But actually being the weight she is and running a marathon, or even an ultra (omg whaaaat???), is wayyyy tougher than running say a sub 3 hr marathon imo. So I have huge respect for her. The folks who decide to run a marathon and do it in 5 hours are in pain for 5 hours!!! That's really, really hard. Kudos to this lady and all the out-of-shape runners who tackle the BIG 26.2; you're a great inspiration. A marathon is HARD and an amazing life achievement. Don't let the haters tell you otherwise!! :)
    When I ran my first marathon I trained for it by running 40-50 miles a week and doing 22 mile long runs. When the marathon finally came it wasn't terrible. Hard yes, but I think the training runs were probably harder and conditioned my body well.

    I think what she’s done is amazing, but the main worry about her weight is not because of appearance but because of safety. When one runs over a marathon, you are putting a tremendous amount of force into each step. The higher the weight, the more force is being applied. If more weight is being applied over an extended period of time it puts one’s hips, knees, and other body parts under more stress than they should undergo. But I believe most runners who run at a marathon/ultra marathon level understand their bodies capabilities, so this message is directed more towards up and coming runners.

  • @clayadams3060
    @clayadams3060 7 лет назад +6

    So apparently there's a lot of judgement and rudeness in the comment section of this video, but like, literally just think about it. If she talks about running and doing what's good for her health regardless of what people think and regardless of stereotypes, what effect is judging her or trying to assign a stereotype going to happen. It's not going to do anything, since she doesn't care about negativity like this. Moreover, the video is more of a response to this type of negativity (in aggregate, of course) so by being negative you are kind of creating an environment where releasing these types of videos is increasingly necessary.
    Basically, don't be an a**hole. No one gets anything out of it.

      Even the records for ultramarathon performances are still predominantly held by Caucasians. East African athletes usually just follows the money, and ultramarathon races often have very little, if any, prize money in them.

    Good for her she seems like a good athlete. I feel bad for her though because if she ate right she'd be insanely good.

    The cool thing is that the running community is pretty doggone accepting of all runners. I'm female, mixed-race, overweight, and I run marathons in a long skirt (for religious reasons.) Some folks might take a second glance, but I've never felt I didn't belong. While I don't agree this sport is dominated by one race or sex, nonetheless, what this lovely lady has accomplished is awe-inspiriing and I have great admiration and respect for her. :-)

    Looks like she does more running from the couch to the refrigerator than she does in marathons

    For this woman’s health, I hope she drops the weight soon. Running around that much with that much extra weight WILL reck her joints. Hell, skinny people do it all the time. She mustn’t have done any really physical sports in her early life to have joints that could handle the type of punishment she is currently dealing out. I wish her luck.

    'People think that fat people sit around all day.' No, fat people think that people think that.
    I do like her, though. Even though she brought up 'female' and 'black'.

    Woah, thats really impressive. Imagine how much more difficult distance running is with 20lbs+ extra weight added onto you. She's doing that and running fucking ultramarathons. Really inspiring.

    This is so important to see that people that are overweight are shamed because they just want to be more fit I used to run track and cross country and my other teammates would make fun of over weight runners any meets and looking back at it it’s so fucked up and wrong

    How has she not lost weight? Doesn't running decrease stress too? And good for her. Running helped me realize that fitness is straight up a high.

    I'm just imagining how good of a runner she'd be at 80 or sounds pounds lighter 🤔!
