I found a 996 GT3 gearknob a nice upgrade. Especially with the lower dash delete for better leg room. Thanks for the handy video I’ll order the RSS mounts after Christmas 👌🏻
Just got my set through in the post today. Cheers for posting the how-to. I’ll report back once they’re in. Mine are knackered, lots of slop in the drivetrain so I’m expecting a decent improvement.
@@TheThrottleCable All I can say is - wow! Night and day difference. The drivers side mount was toast. Started leaking everywhere as soon as I undid the nut on the bottom. Backlash through the drivetrain is now non-existent. She pulls away so much more cleanly, the engine now feels like it’s connected to the car though the twisties and an annoying clunking noise over bumps from the rear has disappeared. No discernible increase in NVH as far as I’m concerned. An odd side effect is that I’m having to recalibrate my rev-matching/ heel and toe. One happy chap. Cheers again! 🍻
OK this mod is now top of my wish list! I've been a bit disappointed with the slightly vague feeling shifter too. I put a 997 shifter in to shorten the throw slightly but there wasn't much discernible difference to be honest. I've got the basic 996 gear knob and don't like the shape of that either, and I've been looking for alternatives without really finding anything nice. I'll be interested to see what you do about that. If you decide to sell your current gear knob, let me know as I could be interested. Thanks for the video!
Given what you say I'm sure you won't be disappointed if you take on this upgrade - it really has brought the car to life and increased the fun of interacting with it. Hopefully i'll have something to report on the gear knob pretty soon :)
It is such a beautiful bit of machining that shifter! I have indeed looked at it with some envy, but right now cannot justify the cost. Some other bits to do. I will try and drive a car with one installed to see how it feels 👍
Hi Rob - have just discovered your Porsche 996 video series and have loved them. We are kindred spirits in terms of prizing driving experience over outright speed, not being too bothered about tracking them but interested in tastefully modifying our 996’s to improve them and create a ‘unique to us’ 911 experience. The difference is that you are further along in the journey than I am and I wanted to tap into your experiences, if that’s OK? I am just weighing up how to lower the stance on my car, to improve the way it looks and drives, and I came across your video on these RSS mounts. My question is, do you remain as positive as you are in this video, two years on from installing them? In reviewing suspension options I saw an upgrade package at Design 911 with Bilstein B8’s, H&R lowering springs, ARBs and these RSS engine mounts. I have rejected coilovers because I think they will ride too hard and compromise the road driving experience, and I have the same concerns about the RSS mounts. Any views you have will be greatly appreciated. Thx in advance, Tony
Hi Tony, that upgrade package from D911 sounds like a great shout. B8 with H&R is a great compromise for Road. I love the mounts, the biggest plus point for me is the improvement in the gearshift - i would buy them again for that alone. I've no issue at all with Noise/vibraion/harshness. The only thing i'm missing is an ARB upgrade which is on my wish list! Cheers. Rob
Any suggestion for cheapest supplier? Just bought my first 911 (996) and engine mounts are on the list of upgrades I'd like to make. Ideally doing as much as possible myself as am on a non Porsche budget! The only task I'm really concerned about is replacing the exhaust manifolds as I know the bolts can often shear off. I may have to save up for a pro to do those. Anyway, thanks for the uploads as they're much appreciated and are certainly helping me! Mark
Hi Mark. They never seem to be ‘cheap’ unfortunately. I would shop around for the best on the day. Exhaust manifold studs are indeed a dreaded job! Most report the need to drill them out so I would suggest you be fully prepared if you take that job on yourself. Cheers and all the best!
Hey, thanks for the video. How many miles did you drive with the semi-solids yet. Many from the rennlist forum are reporting they become loose pretty soon. How is your experience since then?
I’ve probably had them on the car for 1,000 miles or less. No issues to report and a huge improvement felt from them. I would say it’s probably my single favourite change to the car.
Hi mate, bit late to the party but my 997 is in having a new clutch IMS and engine drop for coolant pipes and I am going to replace the mounts while it’s in. You just convinced me to go with these rs mounts, cheers. Which bushing did you put in ? This will work good with the ssk I fitted a while ago I think 👍
These RSS are a fixed rate semi-solid. Rennline has interchangeable busing. These or any of the alternatives are nice upgrade. I didn’t change the gearbox bushing , that is still standard. 👍
How did you take the weight of the engine? At what point did you jack it up? And is there risk of twisting the gearbox/flywheel if you are lifting the engine on a jack? Great vid btw
Hi Shan, just to be clear you are not lifting the engine only supporting it. Do this before you start to unbolt the old mounts. Also I would advise you should only release and replace one mount at a time not two at once. I supported the engine across the sump and spread the weight with a large section of wood that completely covered the base of the block (e.g. as if the lump was sat on pallet for delivery) - I set the jack towards the left and right as i replaced each side for security. I would not advise you place the jack directly to the sump.
gr8 video, My mounts need replacing and was considering the RSS option, did you replace the mounting bolts, or do the RSS come with replacement hardware.
@@veeco3110 interesting - are you UK based or elsewhere - maybe it's a market difference? Funny as my friends Rennline solid mounts arrived and they did not appear to come with top bolts or nuts either! It's no bother however to reuse what's there
Hey man! Excellent videos! Just wondering why you chose the RSS mounts over the RennLine semisolid mounts? The Renn Line units are more adjustable and a bit cheaper, at least here in Canada. Thanks again for clips!
I think you will be happy with either; they are both good products and will make a huge difference to the feel of the car. I chose the RSS based on feedback and the quality look of the machined parts. I’m sure the Rennline are equally good in practice 👍
I have a single mass LWFW on mine and in conjunction with the Rennline semi solids and while the gearbox and handling were improved significantly, and the near elimination of the 2nd movement/weight transfer of the engine was a huge benefit. Unfortunately the engine actually seemed reluctant to rev out above 5k rpm. It seemed just a little coarse as if it was unhappy and it almost felt like it was pulling timing. Did you experience that in any respect? If it wasn't for that, I would recommend this to anyone in a heartbeat.
No issue at all after the engine mount change only positives; sounds like something else must be attributing to your problem as I can’t see how semi solid mounts or even solid mounts could cause the symptoms your showing? Hope you get it sorted
@@TheThrottleCable I pulled them off and replaced with OEM, problem solved. On some cars these can trigger knock sensors which will pull timing. Spoke to Jake Raby about it and he confirmed he see this happen frequently. I was surprised. Might be the interplay with the single mass LWFW which transmits a lot more of the engine NVH to the body and drivetrain already. Engine has been great for the 40k miles since I took off the Rennline mounts
Rennline mount is not the same as the RSS. Softer rubber in RSS specifically to avoid knock issues. Edit: also if you have the lightweight flywheel, you REALLY need the RSS harmonic underdrive crank pulley. By removing the dual mass flywheel there is nowhere for vibration to go other than the engine mounts.
I wonder if it would make as much difference in a Tiptronic? Mines done 93000 and I’ve been thinking about changing the mounts as you say as a service item.
What is your line of work? Just curious as to what career you have that allows you to afford what looks like a nice house, a 997 GT3, a RenaultSport Megane 265, and a 996 Tinkering Toy. And a good few quids worth of bikes hanging on the garage walls! I should have tried harder at Uni!

Hi Rob, I’m interested in doing this to my C4S, however RSS mounts seem to be either £300 each or largely unobtainable….. Who did you buy from please chap?
That is the price of the RSS i'm afraid, i think they were more like £330 - have you considered the Porsche RS mounts they are a little cheaper ? Also Rennline make a set ?
the torque on the bolts is really, really low, I didnt use a torque wrench as I didnt have the paper instructions and just nipped them up and one snapped, damn thing was like a carrot, trying to drill out a bolt took me three evenings and loads of different drill types, all of which just went blunt.. A nightmare, doh.
