I just compiled the dubs of when Keith says "I love you" to shiro.
The full quote is "Shiro, please. You're my brother. I love you."
I know what Keith said. I am a Sheith shipper and I interpret the quote romantically.

Holy shit. He said 'aishiteru'. In Japan, people don't say that often (hardly ever). It's too strong of an emotion to even use with your family (though this varies on the family). But Keith said it to Shiro? I CAN'T. I'M DEAD.

"Suki" or "Daisuki" understands like "I like you", a confession. So, " I love you" means love in differents levels, it's not like in spanish.

It's like "I want you", but it's not usual in english, so it's kinda complicated for us to say " I love you" that easy, haha.

At 0:03 Keith said "Eu amo você", but in the subtitles it was written "Eu te amo". Both mean the same thing actually. I just wanted the people who don't speak portuguese to know this.

Just gonna drop my two cents here and say this relationship could definitely go either way and I would love it no matter what. On one hand there's the familial kind of love that a lot of people see between these two which is understandable given their history and interactions. On the other hand there is also the possibility of a different more romantic love blossoming. While I get people doubt it from that brother line, it's possible Keith could have just said that to cover up what he was truly feeling. From my observations, this kind of thing happens with both straight and gay people who are probably not ready to fully admit their feelings yet so they choose a more safer way of expressing their emotions. I have a friend who would only refer to the guy he liked only as a good friend but secretly he liked him more than a friend, but he never admitted it. Hell, Selena Gomez pulled the brother line back in the earlier years of her and Justin Bieber's relationship where she said on Ellen that Justin was like a little brother to her. It happens, just not that common I guess. But again, this could go either way and I'll be happy with whichever outcome they choose to go with.

The first one and the German one are my favorites because they really put emotion in there.
The Japanese wanted to, but it was not the right kind of emotion. It sounded slightly panicked and too high pitched, while the General tone of the scene is him accepting the situation putting all emotion into one line
That's cause that's the only way a Japanese person could be convinced to bring out the big A-word, is if they felt it was absolutely necessary.

Not really, i'm from Argentina and "Te amo" is completely more romantic and a really strong world, and in the other hand, "te quiero" is used more for friends.
To your family you can use both, depending of how strong is your relationship
I'm from Mexico, I use the "Te amo" for my family and the "Te quiero" for a relationship of friends or loving, but ends up meaning the same and is to express love to someone.
It means the same thing , only in Latin America we use them as per categories, so to speak.
Ah from what I understand "te quiero" means "I want you" and "te amo" means "I love you", so "te quiero" would have more romantic connotations by English standards. "I love you" has a broader meaning in English (can be romantic or platonic), whereas the idea of wanting someone is exclusively romantic. So it's interesting to see how the same ideas can have different connotations in a different language ^^ (if I misunderstood anything I apologize, I'm not fluent in Spanish at all and I would love to hear more explanation ^^)

It’s final. Idgaf about the brother line. That’s a real life common thing that happens among gay couples. They don’t know how to express their feelings so they end up saying lines like that. The studio has been trying for an lgbt representation in the show. We’re by far past the half way point of this show. There’s not that much time to grow other relationships. Seeing this line, this scene, the episode. The amount of money they put into editing the masterpiece that was this episode. The background story even the voice acting and simple looks. THIS. THIS is the lgbt they’ve been fighting for. And if you can’t see that. You’re blind and biased.
Addition: through research you can also see that Keith in the Japanese dub uses “aishiteru” as the word for love. To explain, Japanese rarely express love to each other, and if they do it’s expressed as daisuki. Aishiteru in the culture is dominantly used to explained the deepest form of love to a significant other. Even married couples rarely use the word because of the weight and connotation it has. More importantly. The Ai part of aishiteru explains that it’s an ACTION. Meaning “I’m IN love with you”. To explain with more experience. I speak French. And I’m the French dub he uses “je t’aime” which is also dominantly used for your significant other. Ok I’ve made my argument. Don’t get me wrong. I’m not against klance or any other ship. For a time I loved klance. But no one can deny the depth in the relationship. Before screaming about the brother line, maybe take everything into account. Bye 👋
This is a few days later but I came across another concept. Someone was pointing out how Keith, throughout all of the seasons, was never really able to express his feeling and emotions or even be able to deal with them and bring them up to someone else. He obviously matured within the two years he was gone. Saying the word “brother” is kind of the only way he knows how to articulate his thoughts.
And it also might be a form of censorship like how they made sailor neptune and sailor uranus cousins because their are weird rules about lgbt characters
